The object ot"my invention is to provide Aagainst injury -to the train in the event ofgthcbrealingof the inain-spring in stem-winding watches; also, to simplify the construction of the-working p aits ot' watches of this i description, and, at the same time, render them moredurable; and the invention consists in fitting' the springbox or barrel inan-openin'g in the'diahplate, 'seas toallowfthe formerv to rota-'te freely whentheispringis wound np, the said box or barrel beingprovidedwith, and support-ed inthe plate by, `a toothedflange resting 'onthedial-plate, and` confined to the same by means of screw-hends or projections oni the plate, se as to allow the spring with its barrel to be wound up,- and, by means'of a .spring-*pani engaging'in the toothed flange, thebarrelis prevented from turning in the opposite direction when thewatch is running down. l l
The invention also 'consists of'a sliding plate,which is secured to the dial-plate bymeansfof screws-passing through-slots inthe same, in combination with a button onwash'er and a to'ot`hed wheel,..i n such a) manner that, by turning thearbor or key that-passes'through the stem of the c ase in one'direction, 'the said toothed wheel will be advanced to a position to engage with an ihtermediate gear, and thus wind up the main-spring barrel, and, by turning the arbor or key inthe opposite directionthe slide will again recede, and diSen'ga-ge vthe toothed wheel from the said intermediate gear, and thns allow the arbor to be rotatedvin the opposite -direction without the necessity of releasing the hold on the stem in the act of winding up thc watch.
The invention also consists in the-peculiar method of transferring the action ot' the arbor or key from the winding-mechanism `to that for setting the hands. .I i Referring to the drawings, a represents the dial-plate, and b the under segmental plate. cis the barrel, formed with a rim or annular projection, a', that tits within an opening in the dial-plate, and so as to rotate freely therein. The periphery of the upper plate of the barrel forms n. toothed flange, c,`which rests or bears upon the dial-plate, as shown in lig. 4, and is confined to the saine by means of screw-heads d or other equivalent rneans. A' spring-pearl or click,- e, is arranged to engage in the toothed flan barrel from' turning in the-direction opposite to that'for winding up the watch. The main-spring r is attached, otono end, -to -the hub of the main-wheel arbor by means of a pinda, :is shown in fig. 4, and at the other end to a-pin or .projection on the inner= side of the rim ofthe barrel c, as shown at p), so that the main wheel and arbor will be actuated by the spring, and the barrel will be prevented from rotating, by means of the spring-pawl or v click e. It is arranged within a recess in the dial-plate, and is allowed to slide within the said recess, to a certain extent, longitudinally, being conned to the dial-plate by means of set-screws or projections passing through slots la 7c', at its rea-r and front ends, se as to prevent any'laternl movement.
