Description

gniteh tstrs gedient @ffice WILLIAM W. CLARK, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
Letters Patent No. 74,048, dated February 4, 1868.
IMPROVED BRUSH.
die figehnlt retentir tu in tlgcse rtttrs @anni mit making part nf the same.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM W. CLARK. of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Brush; and I do hereby declare that the following is a. full, clear, and exact description thereof, which wili enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawin'gs, forming part of this specification.
This invention consists in so forming brushes used for painting, varnishing, and other purposes, that the bristles which form the brush are rendered more elastic, and the brush more durable, than when they are put together in the ordinary manner; and this is accomplished by inserting, in the process of manufacture, one or more interliners or partitions, which surround u portion or portions of the bristles, and separate them into one or'more layers around the handle, as will be hereinafter described.
Figure 1 is a. Sectional longitudinal view of a brush, formed according to my invention, with one interliner,
Figure 2 is a cross-section, through the line a: :c of fig. 1.
Figure 3 is a view from the line y y, showing the upper end of the brush as when completed.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
No novelty is claimed in the construction of this brush except for the insertion of the interliner or partition a. This interliner may be a continuous ring, as seen in the drawing, iig. 2, or it may be cut or lapped round a portion of the bristles, or. be put in in sections, and there may be one or more of these interliners placed in the brush, or a. number of pieces separating different layers of thebristles, as may be desired, during lthe process of forming or making the brush. The interlner may be made of any kind of' metal, or of pasteboard, wood, or leather, or any other suitable material, of any desired thickness, and of a width corresponding with the ferrule of' the brush, or therenbout. This arrangement enables me to construct u. brush of the required size er diameter, without making the body or butt so solid and compact as to prevent the required elasticity.
.By this method of construction the brush will retain its elasticity for a much longer period than when it is formed of a solid. mass of bristles, thereby greatly increasing its durability and value. The'space occupied by the partition or interliner not only saves so many bristles, and consequently diminishes the cost of the brush, but renders it more elastic and durable.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A brush, es a new article of manufacture, when constructed as described, with an interliner, a, as and for the purpose specified.
