.To @ZZ wil/0m, it may concern: l Be it known that 1,.JOHN K. SHANAMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Annville, in the county of Lebanon and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and nsefullmprovements in Artificial Limbs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to artificial limbs, and more particularly to artificial legs having Vmovable joints, the object being to provide taken in connection with theA accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, wherein- Figure 1 is a perspective view of an artificial leg constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a view, principally in section, of the foot, showing the ankle and knee connections. Fig. 3 is a view in perspective of the upper portion of the leg proper. Fig. 4: is a detail side view of the knee and ankle connections, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the connections. v
, In the drawings, 1 represents the attaching thigh-socket; 2, the leg proper; 3, the ankle; 4, the pivoted foot; 5, the hinged toe portion; 6, the operating rods, and 7 the joints between t-he ankle and foot. The attaching thigh-socket l may be constructed of any de-V sired material and is perfectly slit, as at 8, and provided with lacing-apertures 9, Whereby it may be secured in position upon the tween the skeleton frame 2, constituting the the bolts 13, having screw-threaded ends secured by nuts 1i and having the apertured heads 15, in which is secured a pin 16. The pin 16 has hinged thereon the bolts 17, which penetrate correspoudingopenings in the foot and are secured by nuts 18. The foot l is socketed, as at 19, to accommodate the shouldered part 2O of the ankle.
The connecting-rod 6 passes through a passage or opening 21 in the ankle 3 and ispivotally attached to an arm or member 22,
which is in turn p ivoted in a bracketA 23, secured to the base of the ankle. The ,arm 22 is provided at its end with a pivotal bolt 24:, which is accommodated in a bore 25, arranged to one side of the foot. As clearly shown in Fig. 2, the bore 25 is served with a 'lining 26 to save wear of the parts, and said lining preferably consists of brass.
27is a coil-spring which surrounds the bolt 24 and serves to maintain the proper position or regulation of the foot in respect to the ankle. 28 is a nut for securing the foot in respect to said bolt.
When the amputated limb is advanced, the movement of the eccentric member or members 1l willcause the connecting-rods 6 to tip the foot so that it will strike the ground firmly with the toe depressed, whereas the reverse 'movement of the limb will cause the toe to be elevated, so that in swinging forward for the next succeeding step said toe will clear all slight obstacles upon the pavement. lt'will also be4 observed that a perfectly natural movement of the foot is secured by the-pivotal connection of the kneejoint.` Furt her,tlie foot'is moved while passing through the air, and .the action of the spring 27 prevents a shaking movement of the foot and also any rattling of the same.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains that modifications may be made in details without departing from the spiritrand scope of same. Hence I do not limitmyself to theprecise construction and arrangements of parts hereinbefore described; but,
Having described the nature and objects of the invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In au artificial leg,the combination of an attaching thigh-socket, a leg and its ankle,

leg and having a bore or passage, a brass tubularlining or sleeve in said passage,aspringbolt in said sleeve, a connecting-rod attached at one end to said eccentric member, and a pivotal arm connecting said rod and springbolt, substantially as described.
