PAY-ROLL COMPUTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 740,394, dated October 6, 1903. Application filed February 28, 1903. Serial No. 145, No mod l- To all whom it may concern: sight-openings or slots in the top of the cas- Be it known that I, HARVEY B. CARLTON, a ing. Fig. 3 is an end view of the device, the citizen of the United States, residing at Rochoperating-gear and the intermediate gear beester, in the county of Monroe and State of ing removed. Fig. 4 is a section on the line 5 New York, have invented new and useful Im- .4 4 of Fig. 1, taken between the ends of the provements in Pay-Roll Computers, of which rollers and the retaining-plate and viewed in the following is a specification. the direction indicated by the arrows. in a device designed to compute wages, and a side elevation of one of the rollers. to this end have shown the web as provided Referring now to the drawings, in which With columns of numbers arranged in the like reference numerals designate corremanner hereinafter described to indicate sponding parts throughout the several views,
20 amounts of salary due for different periods of 1 indicates a casing, and 2 the base of the time at a given rate per week or hour and the device, which in practice operates as the bottop of the casing provided with an index 01: tom for the casing, being first in practice inscale of wages arranged for cooperation with serted in the casing to the proper height and the figures on the web. It will be apparent, then secured by means of screws 3 passed 25 however, that the web may be employed for through the sides of the casing and secured displaying characters other than figures and into the edges of said base. The said base with or without the cooperating scale and has mounted thereon the entire operating also that the figures on the web and easing mechanism of the apparatus, and this mechmay be arranged and adapted for purposes anism will now be described. Adjacent to 0 other than that of computing wagessuch, each end of the base 2 is mounted a bracket for example, as computing interest, comput- 4,'which comprises a single plate of material ing the cost of articles, and the like. bent at right angles to itself to form a base The objects had in view are to mount the or foot portion 5, by means of which the operating-rollers inareadily-detachable manbracket is secured to the base by means of 35 nor upon abase or support, to provide a novel screws 6, and an upright portion 7, in which means for retaining the rollers in position, to are rotatably mounted the operating-rollers. provide a novel manner of mounting and op- To this end one of the brackets t is provided crating the gears for driving the rollers, and with apertures 8, adapted toreceive journals generally to provide asimple, economical, and 9, one of which is provided at one end of each 40 easily-operated device of the character indiroller. The other bracket iis provided near cated. opposite ends with slots 10, opening from the In order that my invention maybe clearly upperside of the bracket, said slots being diunderstood, lhave illustrated the same in the rected or inclined outward in a downward accompanying drawings, in which-- direction.
5 Figure 1 represents a part plan and part 11 indicates the rollers, each of which is sectional plan view of a device constructed provided at the end opposite to that for the according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a secjournal 9 with a journal 12, projecting a suittional view taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1 deable distance beyond the end of the roller, signed to show the arrangement of gears and and on the end of which is fixedly secured a 50 the location of the rollers with respect to the small gear-wheel 13. The journals 12 are adapted to be received and seat in the bottoms of the slots 10, so that the gears 13 will be located outside of the bracket 4. Secured to and projecting from the outer face of the bracket 4, provided with the slots 10, are two studs 14 15, respectively, each of which is interiorly screw-threaded. On the stud 14 is rotatably mounted a gear 16, in mesh with the small gear-wheel 13 on one of the rollers. Said gear is held on its stud by means of a Washer 17, placed against the outside thereof, and a screw 18, passed through said Washer and engaging in the sore w-threads of the stud.
19 indicates a large disk, having its periphery milled, as indicated at 20, fixedly secured to the inner side of which is an operatinggear 21. disk and operating-gear, and said gear and disk are designed thereby to be mounted on the stud 15, so that the operating-gear 21 shall mesh with the gear 16 and the small gear-wheel on the other roller. The disk 19,- with its operating-gear, is retained on the stud 15 by means of a washer and a screw in the manner described with reference to the gear 16. The gear 16, it will be seen, is merely an intermediate gear connecting the operating-gear 21 with one of the gears on one of the rollers. In assembling the parts of the apparatus the rollers are first placed in position in the brackets 4 in the manner described, after which the intermediate gear 16 and the combined disk and operatinggear 19 21 are inserted on their respective studs. The outward incline of the slots 10 tends to prevent any upward displacement of the rollers 11 in the operation of the device, as will be understood; but to further center these rollers and to hold their gears in fixed relation with the intermediate gear 16 and operating-gear 21, respectively, and prevent all binding and undue wear I employ a retaining-plate 25. (Shown in detail in Fig. 6.) The plate 25 is of substantially the same length and height as the bracket 4 and is provided near each end with an enlarged recess 26, opening from the bottom. Near the top of the plate and at each end are provided two outwardly-projecting tongues 27 28, respectively, which are formed by cutting the metal at two places and then bending the intermediate portion of the metal outward. The bracket 4, containing the slots 10, is provided near its top and at each side with a recess 29 30, respectively, the recess 29 being longer than the recess 30. In placing the plate in position it is inserted between the ends of the rollers and the bracket 4, the recesses 26 passing over the respective journals 12 of the rollers. As shown in Fig. 4, the recesses 26 are of much greater width than said journals, so that the plate 25 may be moved to one side or the other. The plate having been placed in position in the manner just described it is moved to one side and pressed down at one end, so that the tongue 27 may be inserted in the recess 29. It is then moved to one side An aperture 22 passes through said in the opposite direction, bringing the tongue 27 substantially to the end of the recess 29, and then the opposite end of the plate is pressed down to bring the tongue 28 opposite the recess 30, after which the plate is moved laterally to cause said tongue 28 to enter the recess 30. Such movement of the plate, however, will not cause the tongue 27 to be moved out of the recess 29 owing to the difference in length of the recesses 29 and 30. When thus placed in position, the tops of the recesses 26 in said plate will engage the journals 12 and prevent them from rising, while slots 10 will prevent movement laterally of said journals.
31 indicates the web, opposite ends of which are secured to the respective rollers 11 and wound thereon in such manner that one roller will display one side of the Web, while the other roller will display the opposite or under side. In other words, the web passes from the under side of one roller to the upper side of the other.
The rollers and the operating mechanism having been mounted on the base 2 in the manner described, said base may now be inserted in the casing l and is screwed in position by the screws 3. The casing 1 is provided near one end with a transverse slot 32, through which the winding-disk 19 may protrude. The said casing is also provided on its upper side with an index or scale, which may be made from cardboard or any other suitable material and is indicated generally,
by the numeral 33, said scale or index being provided with two longitudinal slots or sightopenings 34 35, respectively, which extend immediately over and along the rollers 11, containing the web 31. The sight-openings 34 35 correspond and register with similar openings made in the top of the casing, as
will be understood, the scale-card or index being pasted or otherwise secured to the top of the casing. The said scale 33 will preferably be covered with some transparent material, such as glass or celluloid 36.
In the preferred embodiment of the invention, as illustrated herein, I arrange in a column adjacent to one edgesay the left-hand edge of each sight-opening or slot 34 35a column of figures which indicate different weekly salaries, such column being indicated by 37, while to the left of this column is-arranged a second column 38, indicating the rate perhour of the wages. To the right of each sight-opening are arranged three columns of figures 39, 40, and 41, indicating, respectively, the rate of salary'forone-fourth, one-half, and three-fourths of an hour. In the center of the scale is provided a space 42, which is utilized for designating in a suitable manner these various columns. Thus in The column 38 is designated by the The columns 39, 40,
lIO
cated in the space 43 in the line of a given column of numbers on the web. The web 31 is correspondingly numbered on both sides, and in operation two columns of numbers on the web may be made to appear simultaneously at each of the openings 34 35, and each column thus made to appear will disclose the same number in the central space 43. In the arrangement of the scale and of the two columns of figures which are simultaneously disclosed by the web the column of figures on the web at the right of the device and the columns of figures arranged with respect to the aperture through which said column is disclosed are continuations of a like arrangement of numbers at the left of the devicethat is to say, the combined arrangement of numbers at the right begins at the top where the combined arrangement of numbers left off at the bottom of the column at the left. The principle is precisely the same as though only one roller were employed; but two rollers displaying two columns of numbers are employed for the purpose of affording greater amplitude of computation., In the same manner four or more rollers could be employed to display a corresponding number of columns of figures. The numbers on the web and scale are based on a day of ten hours, and a single illustration will suffice to show the use of the device.
Supposing it be desired to find the amount due an employee who has worked fifty-seven hours and receives a salary of fifteen dollars per week for ten hours a day. To ascertain this, the disk 19 is turned until the number 57 in the space 43 in the center of the web appears at the sight-openings 34 35. The operator then runs his eye down the column of numbers 37, which contains numbers indicating different weekly salaries, until 15.00 is reached. Opposite 15.00 on the column of numbers on the web will be displayed the numbers 14.25, which will indicate the amount due the workman. If the employee had worked fifty-seven and one-fourth hours, then the operator would refer to the first column to the right, indicated by 39, and opposite 14.25 he would find 6, which amount would be added to 14.25. If the time worked was fifty-seven and one-half hours, he would refer to the column 40, and opposite 14.25 he would find 13, which amount would be added to the 14.25. If
the time worked was fifty-seven and threefourths hours, he would refer to the column 41, and opposite 14.25 would find 19, which amount would be added to 14.25,
thus giving the total amount due for fifty- 1 seven and three-fourths hours work. The large numbers at the center of the web indicate the total number of hours or work. If the salary is based on a rate per hour, then the operator would simply refer to the column 38 to ascertain the salary due in place of the column 37that is to say, using the same numbers as in the above illustration. If an employee had worked fifty-seven hours and received twenty-five cents an hour for his work, the amount shown to be due is 14.25. As stated, however, other arrangement of numbers may be employed, and I have described and illustrated an arrangement with which my invention was particularly designed to be operated.
It will be noted that the size of the rollers 11 is such as to bring the web into close proximity to the openings 34 35in the top of the casing without the use of any other form of guide or supporting device.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
