Bit knownthat I, LUMAN lROGERS, ofthe city of Pittsburg, in'the county of Allegheny, and State of' Pennsylvania, have invented a nevv and us'eful Improvement in Teeth or Shovels for Cultivators; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and-enact description thereof', reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming partofths specification in which- .Figure 1 is a perspective'representation of a shovel-'plough blade attached to its standard. v

My invention is designed to be appliedA not-onlyto 'the shovels or blades of shovel-ploughs, but alo cnltivatort-eeth; and consistsin an improvement in the structure of such teeth, sho'vels, o1' blades, and inthe devices employed'for attaching themto the-standard or' frame by which they are held or supported. It is pecu-` vliarly adapted-tothe teeth orshovelsof cultivators when they are made ot steel,- but is also useful when' they are, made of lwrought or cast iron.l Steel cultivator-t'eeth and plough-blades are usually mad-e of sheet steel,

The bolt must have ahead inl orderfto hold thevtooth orshovel securely, whichV head must be' c ountersunk into lthe face ef the tooth our `1.\loughpoint-,` s o'as to leave no projection, it being highly important that these teeth or shovels should be-smooth and polished. t :As the surface of the toothwea'rs'away by use,` the bolt-head also becouiesworn', and its hold on the steel plate-gradually diminishes, so that when anew tooth or shovel has to be attached to the cultivator or plough, the old bolts cannot be used` again.A Itis also diilicult to get the bolt-heads to tit nicely iu the steel plate so as to forni a smooth finish; and after a little u-se, the unequal wear -of the steel plate andpf the bolt* head causes anunevennessof surface vvhich is injurious to Athe implement. By my invention I overcome these difficulties, obviatiug thenecessity of `pcrt'orating the plate forming the tooth or shovel of the c ultvator or plough, and thus securing an unbroken surface susceptible of a high polish;- I also vdispense with the necessity ofi using more-than .one bolt, and secure a much firmer attachment to the standard. My improved teeth or shovels` are much stronger at the point where they need the greatest strength than those made in the ordinary way, and the bolts not being exposed to vrear on thehead, may be used, as long as the frame or standard lasts, lwith a'succe'ss'ion bf teeth o r shovels.- i

To enable yothers skilled in the art to construct and use my improved oultivator or plough-teeth or shovels, I will-proceed to explain my invention more fully, and in so doing will describe its application to shovehplongh blades.

the Wedge-shaped head e of the screw-boltf, which is formed to t the notch exactly, the head of the bolt being inserted into thel side of the ribvb, so that when the bolt ls passed through the standard c, the sides lof the groove dpreventfthe bolt from slipping out,.and holdit securely in place.- The blade a heing`placed on the standard c, with the rib binserted into the groove d, and theboltf projecting through the standard, as shown in fig. 1,- the-nathvis screwed .on the end of the bolt, and holds the shovel or blade iirmly in place. By this means the shovelor blade Iishso securelyattached to the standard that it cannot shake loose or move from its position, and

as `the boltis inserted in the rib b, onthe back of the blade, it .is entirely unnecessary tomuke any perforation in the surface of the blade, or '.to use more `thana. single bolt. If preferred, the rib b may be 'welded on te the blade, but I prefer to roll the blade, whether of steel ovni-ought iron, with the rib on it. The rib need not be continued all-the way up the blade, but I prefer to do so, as it adds to its strength, and enables the blade to be made of a thinner plate, if desired. In place of the continuous Arib, two or more projections-may be formed on the hack of the blade, into one of which the bolt-head-may be devel-tailed or screwed. v I

The mode of applying my invention to .cultivator-teeth, whether U-shap'ed or otherwise, is obvious; the rib being rolled on the back of the blade before it receives its proper shape.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The rib b on the back of cultivator-teeth, or of blades for shovel-plougbs,i`or tbe purpose of adding strength to the blade, or for forming a means of attaching it to its standard or frame.

2. Attaching eultivator-teeth or blades of'shovel-ploughs by means ofa bolt inserted into a. rib or projection on the back of the tooth, which fits into a recess or groove in the standard or frame, vsubstantially as and for the purposes described.
