OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYL- TU BE-COU'PLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent o. 74Q,003,"dated September 29, 1903.
Application filed December 24, 1.902. Serial No. 136,440. No inodel To if/ZZ'V whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, RQBERTAGILLESPIE, 'a citizen of the United States, residing at; Y
Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain.
iined, alsoto the shape of the gaskets, whereby the couplings are effectively and permanently sealed.
' In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a longitudinal sectional view of a coupling embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the coupling with the parts detached. Fig. 3 is a face view of one of the couplingrings. Figs. 4 and 5 are detail sectional views enlarged.
Referring to the drawings, 2 designates the coupling-sleeve', which receives the ends of pipe-sections 3. 4 represents the rubber packing rings or gaskets, 5 the coupling-rings, and 6 the bolts which connect and draw up the coupling-rings, the bolts extending through the apertured ring-ears 7 in the usual manner. The end surfaces of sleeve 2 form abutments for the packing-rings andare each doubly beveled at 8 and 9, forming annular ridge l0, outer bevel 8 being preferably more gradual than bevel 9-say at an angle of thirty degrees to the plane of sleeve-axisand bevel 9 at a sharper angle of about fortyve degrees. However, I do not confine myself in this regard.
The inner face of each packing-ring 4 is doubly beveled at 11 and 12 complementary with'the sleeve double bevel-8 and 9, while the opposite face thereof is beveled outwardly or backwardly at 13 and grooved at 14 to receive annular bead l5 on the inner countersunk end face of coupling-ring 5. The inner side of ring 5 is preferably formed with a double bevel divided by bead l5, constituting the distinct packing compressing faces 16 and 17, with outer face 16 in advance vof face 17.
The annular rim or edge 1S of the couplingring forms apocket for the gasket, and when drawn up," as in Fig. l, said rim overlaps sleeve 2 and completely incloses the packing and preserves the same against injury, wear, and deterioration incident to exposure.
When drawing up the coupling-rings in applying the coupling, outer face 16 of each coupling-ring being in advance of inner face 17 the outer portion of the gasket is subjected to greater pressure than the inner portion, also is compressed slightly inadvance ofthe latter, with the result that the looser inner portion is crowded or wedged tightly against the pipe before the maximum pressure is attained. At the inner face of the gasket bevel 8 serves to crowd or wedge the rubber laterally against the pipe and inward against the inner sharper bevel 9, ridge 10 tending to hold or coniine the rubber as thus compressed.
In couplings of this character the packingrings should tightly impinge the tubing in order that an efficient and permanent seal may be had. With my improve ments the whole tendency of the beveled sleeve ends and coupling-rings is to crowd or wedge the whole of the packing-rings against the pipe in addition to compressing the samelongitudinally;
1. In a tube-coupling, a packing-abutment, a packing-ring, and a coupling-ring having its packing-engaging surface in distinct parallel faces-one in advance of the other--and each of frusto-conical form.
2. In atube-coupling, apacking-abutment, a packi-ng-ring, a coupling-ring having an inwardlyreceding packing engaging surface parallel with the surface o f the packing-ring it engages and corresponding in VWidth to the width of the packing-ring and Aadapted to compress the entire section thereof, said packingengaging surface havingdistinct annular faces one in advance of the other.
3; In a tube-couplin g, a packing-compressing ring having its packing-engaging surface formed with distinct parallel faces.
4. In a tube-coupling, a packing-compressing ring having its packing-engaging surface IOO formed with distinct parallel inwardly-receding faces.
5. In a tube-coupling, a packing-compressing ring having its packing-engaging surface formed with distinct faces and a bead intermediate and separating the faces.
6. In a tube-coupling, a packing-abutment, packing, and a compressingring having its packingengaging side formed with parallel faces oblique to the ring-axis.
7. In a tu be-coupling, a packing-abutment, packing, and a compressing-ring having an annular projection on its inner side dividing said side into two faces disposed toward the abutment and adapted to force the packing thereagainst,` one face being in advance of the other.
8. In a tube-coupling, a packing-abutment, packing, and a coupling-ring having distinct packing-engaging faces, a bead intermediate the faces, the face of greater diameter being nearest the abutment or in advance of the other face.
9. In a tube-coupling, a packing-abutment, a packing-ring having an end face oblique to the ring-axis and formed with an annular groove, the portion of the face of greatest diameter being nearest the abutment, a coupling-ring having distinct packing-engaging faces with the face of greater diameter in advance of the face of lesser diameter, and an annular projection on the coupling-ring intermediate said faces.
10. In a tube-coupling, a packing-abutment l having two faces disposed at an angle to each other with a ridge at the juncture of the faces, a packing-ring beveled to fit said abutment, and a coupling-ring having distinct packingengaging faces with the face of greater diameter in advance of the other face.
1l. In a tube-coupling, the combination of a tube-receiving sleeve having an inwardlyreceding beveled end, the bevel being formed with distinct annular faces disposed at diiferent angles to the sleeve-axis, packing, and means for forcing the packing against the beveled sleeve end. v
l2. In a tube-coupling, the combination of a tube-receiving sleeve having the inwardlyreceding beveled ends, cach bevel being formed with distinct annular faces disposed at different angles to the sleeve-axis, packingrings, coupling-rin gs for forcing the packingrings against the sleeve ends, and means for drawing the coupling-rings toward the sleeve.
13. As a new article of manufacture, apackin g-rin g having its outer side beveled to form a ring of tapering section, the bevel extending from the thickest portion of the ring to one edge thereof and formed with distinct faces of frusto-conical form, said faces being oblique to each other and to the ring-axis.
In testimony whereof I aiiiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
