UNITED STATES iPatentecl September 22, 1903.
PATENT OFFICE.
ASA A. HOYT, OF WATSONVILLE, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR TO HOYTS TREE SUPPORT (30., OF VVATSONVILLE, CALIFORNIA, A CORPORATION OF CALIFORNIA.
TREE-8U PPORT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 739,676, dated September 22, 1903. Application filed .l'uly 15, 1902. Serial No. 115,618. (No model.)
To (ZZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known thatI, ASA A. HOYT, a citizen of the United States, residing at VVatsonville, county of Santa Cruz, State of California, have invented an Improvement in Tree-Supports; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to a device for sup- 10 porting the limbs of trees, which consists, es-
sentially, of concaved blocks adapted to fit the curvature of tree-limbs and having swivel attachments which may be" connectedwith the opposite support and which by raising of [5 their swivel connection with the blocks allow the latter to take any position to fit the limb without chafing.
The object of my invention is to provide a propless support for the limbs of fruit and other trees which shall be self-adjusting to any angle at which two limbs to be supported may stand.
Referring to the accompanying drawings for a more complete explanation of my invention, Figure 1 is an isometrical view of the support. Fig. 2 is an under side view of the support. Fig. 3, shows boughs of a tree supported.
A represents blocks of suitable length and 0 width having one side grooved or channeled lengthwise. This groove or channel 2 substantially fits the convexity of the limb, and the blocks are of sufticient length to provide an extended bearing against which the limb 3 5 rests. Upon the other side of the blocks are fixed staples 3, through which a wire loop 4. passes across the back of the concaved block. The ends of the loop are bent to form eyes, as shown at 5. gagement of wires or bails, as 6, after a limb has been engaged in the loop and seated in the groove of the block. Opposing tree- These eyes serve for the en limbs, each having one of the supports-upon its outer side, may be drawn toward each other by means of a cord or other suitable connection 7 between the supports. If the blocks are intended to support the limbs by suspension or other manner, the attachment can be made to the wires from any desired point, the object being to so swivel the supporting-blocks that they will not chafe the limbs.
In application the blocks are placed just above a projecting twig to prevent slipping, and the pivotal connection of the loops and blocks allows the latter to remain stationary. Oonsequently'there is no chafing whatever on the limbs, and the device adapts itself immediately to any angle at which a limb may be supported.
Having thus described my invention, what i I claim as new, and desire'to secn re by Letters Patent, is- 1. The combination in a tree-support, of blocks engaging the farther sides of two, opposing limbs, and swiveled connections between said blocks.
2. The combination in a tree-support, of
concaved blocks fitting the sides of the limbs,
and swiveled connections with said blocks by which the latter may adjust themselves antomatically to the inclination of the limbs when the blocks are drawn toward each other.
3. A limb-support comprisin g clips or seats, and bails connected together and pivoted. to the clips or seats, and arranged to swing longitudinally of the limb.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
ASA A. HOYT.
