`FASTENER SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 739,522, dated. September 22, 1903.
application iiled April 27, 1903. Serial E0. 154,548. (No model.) v
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WALFRID WALLENTHIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Attleboro, in the county of Bristol and State of ment in fasteners used to 'fasten or secure articles to wearing-apparel or to fasten articles of wearing-apparel together. In fasteners or clamps of this nature as heretofore constructed the fastening or clamping arm is constructed separately and secured in the frame of the fastener.
rl`he object of my invention is to construct the frame and clamping-arm integral, thus simplifying the construction and lessening the cost of the fastener.
My invention consists in the peculiar. and novel construction of the frame 'and clamping-arm, formed integral, and of the operating-lever, pivotally secured in the frame and operating the clamping-arm, as will be more fully set forth hereinafter.
Figure l is an enlarged plan View of the lblank forming the frame and clamping-lever Fig. 2 is an edge view of. the
in one piece. frame and clamping-lever blank. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the operating-lever. Figa is an edge view of the operating-lever. Fig. 5 is a view of the completed fastener'looking at the operating-lever side. Fig. 6 is a sectional view taken lengthwise through the fastener and showing the fastener in the closed position. Fig. 7 is a sectional view similar to Fig. 6, showing the fastener in the normal open position in full lines and in the extreme open position in broken lines.
In the drawings, o; is the U-shaped frame of the fastener stamped from sheet metal having a spring-tension. eyes a o.' for attaching articles to the fastener,
lthe stamped-up bearings d? a? for the pivots of the operating-lever, and the clamping-arm da, with the inwardlybent lip at and the stamped-upQhook a5, are formed integral. The
operating-lever h is stam ped from sheet metal' and formed to have the outwardly-rolled edge b', the pivots Z2? b2, and the inwardly-bent cam end b3.
The frame ot, with theV To insert the operating-lever h in the frame, the blank is partly bent and the clampingarm a3 is depressed. The end h3 of the operating-laverie nowinserted i'n the opening of the blank, and the pivots?)2 b2 are forced under and into the bearings e2 o?, bringing the operatinglever into the position as shown in Fig?. The operation of bending the blank is now completed, forming the U-shaped frame ct of the fastener. I
In the operation of my improved vfastener the end b3 of Vthe operating-lever acts as a cam `on the clamping-arm cts, the closing of the operating-lever forcing the clamping-arm into its closed position against the'spring-tension of the arm and holding it in this position, as shown in Fig. 6. When the operating-lever is opened, the clamping-arm (under springtension) assumes its normal open position, as shown in full lines in Fig. 7, and a backward movement of the operating-lever b brings the end b3 under the hook a5 and opens the clamping-arm to its outward limit, as shown in broken lines in Fig. 7.
By my improved construction I form a fastener of two parts that has all the charactervistics of the best fasteners of this nature having three or more parts and at a lower cost than has heretofore been done.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters 'Patentv In; a fastener, the combination with the U shaped frame ct stamped from sheet rnet'al and having the eyes a a', the stamped-np bearings c a2, and the clamping-arm as with the inwardly-bent lip a4 and the stamped-up hook a5 all formed integral with the frame, of the operating-lever b stamped from Sheet metal and having the outwardly-rolled edge b', the pivots h2 b2 and the inwardly-bent cam end ha, all for the purpose as described.
ln testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specilcation in the presenceof.
two subscribing witnesses.
VVALFRID WALLENTHIN.
