Description

Nb. 739,484. PATENTEDSEPTJZ, 190B.
' G. E. ELSEY.
CORNER IRON FOB VEHICLE BODIES. Arrmonlon nun my 8. 1903. N0 MODEL.
' ;wnllkllllllillflllt l lllllllllilllll w UNITED STATES Patented September 22, 1903.
GRANT E. ELSEY, OF AURORA, MISSOURI.
CORNER-IRON FOR VEHICLE-BODIES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 739,484, dated September 22, 1903.
Application filed May 8, 1903. Serial No. 156.260. (N0 model.)
To allwhom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, GRANT E. ELSEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Aurora, in the county of Lawrence and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful adapted to be bolted together, one upon the inner side of the body and the other upon the outer portion and over the corners thereof, thereby securely holding the panels ofthe body, as well as the bottom, against expansion or contraction caused by the woodwork held by the clamps becoming alternately wet and dry or for other reasons.
The invention consists, further, in various details of construction and combinations andarrangements of parts, which will be herein after fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claim, and is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of the vehicle-body, showing my improved brace-plates as secured to the corners thereof. Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view of the corner-plates held in their relative positions to each other, the panels of the body being shown in dotted lines.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a body of a vehicle, which may be of any desired shape, and B designates an angled plate made of malleable or cast metal and has right-angled wings which are adapted to contact with the outer face of an end and side of the body, while the bottom portion A is disposed at right angles to thevertical portions 'the bottom of the body portion.
tions, and each' wing of the angled plate 0 has a right-angled portionD, either, bent or cast in the shape illustrated, the two extensions extending one above the other at right angles. Each of the plates-the one that is fastened on the outside of the body and the inner plateis provided with apertures which are in registration, and bolts, rivets, or other fastening means are adapted to be passed through registering apertures in said plates and the end or side walls of the body for the purpose of clamping the plates to the corners horizontal portion of the outer plate and will have aten dency to hold the two projecting sections securely in place inthe positions illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
. From the'foregoing it will be observed that by the provision of my improved metallic corner strengtheners or braces, made as shown and described, the side and end walls of the body will be securely clamped by the plates and held together against any excessive strain that may come upon the connected ends and will also serve toprevent the side and end walls from loosening by action of the elements or the alternately moistening and drying out of the wood-of the body and which is clamped by the plates.
.While I have shown a particular construc tion of metallic angled plates, it will be understood that I may make alterations in the shape or construction of the same and may make them either of malleable or cast metal, as may be found to be best adapted for the purpose, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is V In combination with avehicle body, a
brace-plate B, B having its vertical portions which are bent horizontally upon themselves and at right angles-to the Vertical portions, a plate 0 having its vertical portion bent at right angles and said plate slitted longitudinally in line with its angled portion, the ends formed bysaid slitting being bent upon themselves at right angles to each other and extending beyond the lower ends of the plate 13, and pins designed to be passed through said projecting ends and bearing against the 10 horizontally-(lisposed ends of the plate 13, as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afifix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
GRANT E. ELSEY.
