TOBACCO-HOIS'I".I
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent o. 739,358, dated September 22, 1903.
Application led August 12, 1902. Serial No. 119,422. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN SULLIVAN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Suffield, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tobacco- Hoists, of which the following is a specificavtion.
Tobacco while curing isvhung in tiers in huge sheds or barns, and considerable handling is necessary to get it into place.
The object of my invention is to provide a hoist by which the tobacco can be raised from the ground iioOr up to the upper parts of the building with great ease and little liability of bruising or marring the leaves.
In the drawings, Figure l is a cross-sectional View of a curing-shed and shows my hoist in place. Fig. 2 is a detail side view of the hoist. Fig. 3 is a detail front view.
In the drawings, A denotes hars or girders arranged crosswise Of the building in tiers one above the other.
B denotes strngers running lengthwise of the building.
In the drawings the tobacco is shown as being cured on the stalk, these lstalks being se-V cured to a lath C. This lath C is long enough so that its ends will rest on the stringers B, as shown at D in Fig. 1.v In filling the upper tiers of a building it has been customary to station a man On each tier and have him take the lath froml the man below him and pass it to the man above him, I have found that by this methodl many of the leaves are bruised or scratched, so that the leaves after curing are marred and defective, occasioningconsiderable loss to the grower. In order to handle these laths With the stalks attached to them, so that the leaves will not become dam# aged, I have devised the herein described hoist. It consists of the bar a, which supports by a swivel connection bthe frame c, 'in' which ismounted the shaft d, on which are the sheaves c, over these sheaves running the ropes f, made up of sections joined as at g. Connecting these ropes are the slats h, which carry hooks 7o, which are adapted to receive and hold the laths C, as clearly shown in Fig. 3. A brake M, made up of a bar m, pivotally supported from the frame c by the arms n, is
adapted to engage the slats h to prevent a backward movement of the ropes.
If desired, eXtra slats may be placed intermediate of the slats carrying the hooks, which may be used to Operate the hoist.
I am aware that alterations of this arrangement may bemade Without departing from the spirit of my invention, and I desire to include herein any and all such modifications.
Iclaim as my invention- In a device of the character described the combination Of a .supporting-bar, a frame, swiveled means for connecting said frame and suppOrting-bar,a shaft mounted in said frame,
carrying sheaves, sectional ropes fastened over said sheaves, slats connecting said ropes, hook members carried by said slats and pivotal means supported upon said frame adapte ed to lock ropes in position.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature' in presence of two Witnesses.
JOHN SULLIVAN.
