SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 739,206, dated. September 15, 1903.

Be it known that 1, CHARLES WV. MCSHA NE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Zanesvi1le,in the county of Muskingum and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Seal-Locks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to certain novel and useful improvements in looks, and has particular application to a car-door-lock-seal holding device.
One of the principal objects of the present invention is to provide a device of the class described which shall constitute a combined lock and seal, so that when applied in operative position to a car-door it shall be impossible to open the door without the same being detected owing to the breaking or destroying of the seal.
As a further object I have also in contemplation to so construct my improved device that the seal-holder thereof may be cleansed or the seal removed therefrom by the act of unlocking the car-door.
It is also my intention toprovide the lock with means whereby the car-door hasp shall be secured in such position that the motion of the car will not cause said hasp to strike or contact with the key portion of the lock and holder, thereby gradually shattering and destroying the seal in said mold.
Another object of the invention is to construct a combined sealing and'locking device which shall be exceedingly simple and durable and shall enable the car-door to be more economically locked and sealed than can be done at the present time with the ordinary lead seal.
To the accomplishment of the hereinbeforerecited ends the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as is herein described in this specification, delineated in the accompanying drawings, and set forth in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention in operative locked and sealed position on a car. Fig. 1 shows a type of sealing-die employed. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of my invention partially unlocked and showing the seal partly fractured or destroyed. Fig. 3 is a side elevation showing the manner of holding or restraining the hasp from striking the key of the lock, portions of this view being broken away to show the beveled inside of the seal-recess. Fig. at is a front elevation of the base plate and mold, the key being removed therefrom. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the key, showing the cam formation thereon. Fig. 6 is a side elevation of said key. Fig. 7 is a plan view of the holder and'base-plate, showing the keyhole or groove in the holder, the lid being partially broken away; and Fig. 8 is an elevation of the hasp, showing the locking-slots therein.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, 1 designates the back or base plate of the device, such plate being provided with apertures for the reception of screws or nails, whereby the said body portion or plate may be secured to the j amb of a car-door. This back or base plate of the structure is also provided with the outwardly-extending lugs or projections '2 and 3, which are spaced apart and have orifices 4 and 5 formed therein for the reception of the spindles 6 and 7 of my improved combined key and seal remover 8. As will be seen, this key 8 is provided with a handle or fingerhold 9, and also has akey-head 10 secured to the upper end of the spindle 6, such head being adapted to enter the groove or keyhole 11, formed in the bottom of the seal-holding recess 12, which recessed portion of the lug is provided with a storm lid or cover 13. To add to the efliciency and seal-retaining function of this recess 12, I preferably form the latter of smaller diameter in cross-section at the top than at the bottomthat is to say, the recess is frusto-conical or inclinedand when the seal is formed therein it is impossible to remove the same without noticeably mutilating or fracturing it. The said key Sis also provided at the lower extremity of the spindle 7 with an annularshoulder 16, adapted to serve as a stud or retainer for a spiral spring 17, which is coiled about or encircles the spindle portion 7 and bears against the under side of the lug 3, the construction being such that the key-head 10 will be drawn into the recess or keyhole 11 when it is in aposition for registration or alinemcnt therewith, thus with more certainty retaining the key-head in locking position. The car-hasp 19 is provided along its length with a number of slots or apertures 20, enlarged at their lower ends for receiving the rim or head of the catch 15 and reduced or narrowed toward their upper ends to receive snugly between the sides or edges thereof the shank of the stud 15 when the hasp is dropped into the channel 18. The handle 9 of the key 8 is formed with an orifice 21, alining with'the slot 20 of the hasp 19 when the car-door is locked, so that a cord or wire or other suitable material may be passed through the two portions to unite the same and a common lead seal applied thereto, or, if desired, apadlock may be employed, as shown in Fig. 2. A sealing-die 23 is used to impress the sealing material 21 after the same has been poured or placed in the seal-holder 12, or the same may be impressed with the die prior to placing said seal in the holder without in anyway affecting the invention.
From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of my invention will be readily apparent. As the car-door is closed the hasp 19 is allowed to slide in the space between the rim of the catch 15 and the cam of the key 8 until the desired slot 20 is directly opposite the catch 15, when, through the larger portion of said slot, the hasp is thrown or moved into engagement with the catch and thereupon drops into the channel 18, while at the same time the upper edge of the slot partially encircles the shank to stay or prevent the hasp from striking any part of the key 8. Through the finger or hand piece 9 the key is then moved to the left until the key-head 10 is in alinemcnt with the keyhole or groove 11, formed in the holder or recess, and when in this position, the cam 14: being immediately adjacent to the catch 15, the key-head 10 is drawn down into the groove or keyhole 11 by the spiral spring 17, thereby locking the hasp 19 on the catch 15 and also clearing the holder 12, whereupon the sealing material may be placed in said holder and impressed with the sealing-die 23, heretofore described, thereby forming the seal 24 for the car. In order to open the door, the key-head 10 must be forced up through the seal into the cavity or recess 12, and then the fingerpiece 9 must be moved around to the right until the cam ll will allow the hasp 19 to pass out over the rim of the catch 15, the key-head 10 cleansing the holder or recess 12 of the old seal and rendering said holder or recess again ready for use.
While I have shown and herein described one particular embodiment of my invention, it will of course be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise details herein, as the invention is susceptible of variouschanges in the proportions and arrangement of the parts and in minor details of construction without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A device of the class described, comprising a recessed body portion having a groove formed in the base thereof, and a key movablymounted in said base portion and adapted to have locking engagement with the grooved base of the recessed body, the construction being such that a vertical movement of the key is necessary to release the latter from engagement with the grooved base,substantially' as set forth.
2. A device of the class described, comprising a recessed body portion adapted to serve as a holder for sealing material, said recessed portion having a groove therein, verticallymovable, rotatable, sealfracturing means adapted to lie in the groove of the recessed portion, beneath the sealing material, and a cover for said recess, substantially as set forth.
A device of the class described, comprising a body portion having a frusto-conical recess therein, seal-fracturing means normally lying in the recessed portion and adapted to be covered by the sealingmaterial, and a tension device for the seal-fracturing means, substantially as set forth.
1. A device of the class described, comprising a recessed body portion adapted to serve as a seal-holder, said recess having a groove formed in the base thereof, the walls of the recess converging upwardly, and seal-fracturing locking means adapted to lie in said groove beneath the seal when the door is in its sealed position, but movable from the groove for fracturing and removing the seal when the door is opened, substantially as set forth.
5. A device of the class described, comprising a base-plate, apertured lugs extending therefrom, one of said lugs having a recess therein, serving as a holder for the sealing material, a locking and seal-fracturing key extending through the apertures in the lugs and having a head portion lying in said recess beneath the sealing material. when the door is sealed, and latching means held against movement between the base-plate and the key when the door is locked, substantially as set forth.
(3. A device of the class described, comprising a base-plate, lugs projecting therefrom, one of said lugs having a recess to receive the sealing material, vertically-movable, ro tatable, combined seal fracturing and looking means supported by said lugs, and doorlatching means held against movement between the locking and fracturing means and the base-plate, substantially as set forth.
7. A device of the class described, comprising a recessed body portion having a groove in the bottom of said recess, a locking-key movably mounted in the body portion to bring the head of such key into locking engagement with the grooved base, and tension means assisting in retaining the key in its locked position, substantially as set forth.
8. The combination with a car-door frame and a car-door, of a locking and sealing device therefor, comprising arecessed body portion forming a holder for the sealing material, a spindle mounted in said body portion, a key-head carried by said spindle and resting in the recess, a cam on said spindle, and means for turning said cam, the construction being such that upon the revolution of the cam the key-head will be rotated in the recess, substantially as set forth.
9. The combination with a car-door frame and a car-door, of a seal-containing body portion, acam-key rotatably mounted therein, a latchinghasp passed between the cam-key and the body portion, and means for holding the hasp against movement, substantially as set forth.
10. The combination with a car-door frame and a car-door, a hasp for said door, a combined lock and seal-containin g body portion, a catch on said body and adapted to engage said hasp, a key locking the hasp on the catch, and a seal in the body portion, the aforesaid key being adapted in the operation of opening the'door to destroy the seal, substantially as set forth.
11. The combination with a car-door and a car-door frame, of a slotted hasp for said door, a combined lock and sealcontaining body portion attached to the car-door frame, a catch or stud on the body portion, the said bodyportion having a channel formed therein, and beneath the catch or stud, the construction being such that the hasp is adapted to fit over the catch and lie in said channel,a key for locking the hasp on the catch, and a seal in the body portion, the key being adapted in the operation of opening the door to destroy the seal, substantially as set forth.
12. The combination with a car-door and a ear-door frame, of a hasp attached to the door, a lock and seal-containing body portion secured to the frame, a key for said lock and seal-containing body portion, and fastening means connecting the hasp and key when the door is in its locked and sealed position, substantially as set forth.
13. A sealing-lock having a recess therein forming a seal-holder, and having a groove or keyhole extending through and across the bottom of the recessed portion, and a key provided with a cross-head having an angular lower edge adapted to lie in said keyhole and to be moved therefrom during the operation of unlocking, to destroy the seal in said mold and to cleanse the mold of the seal, substantially as set forth.
14. A locking and sealing device, comprising a back or base plate provided with an upper lug having a beveled recess therein, the bottom of the recess having a slot extending through and across the same, a key-spindle extending through orifices formed in the lugs, a catch or stud having an enlarged head formed on the back plate above a channel extending across one of said lugs, a cam formed on the key-spindle, a hasp adapted to be held against movement between the case or back plate and the cam, a spiral spring coiled about the lower portion of the spindle of the key for drawing the key-head into the groove in the recess when such groove and key-head are in alinement, and a seal fitting in the recessed portion of the lug, the construction being such that when the key is forced upward through the seal and turned such seal will be broken and cleansed from the recess and the car-door hasp will be released, substantially as set forth.
15. A device of the class described, comprising a base-plate, a lug projecting from said plate, a frusto-conical, seal-receiving recess formed in said lug, and seal-fracturing means lying within the recess of the lug, substantially as set forth.
