DOOR-CLOSING AND BUCKET-TILTING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 739,111, dated September 15, 1903. Application filed February 21, 1903. Serial No. 144.511. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMEs RICHARD RULE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Central City, in the county of Gilpin and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door- Closing and Bucket-Tilting Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in an apparatus for simultaneously closing the doors of mine-openings and positioning a device for tilting a bucket for delivering the ore therein.
The object of my invention is to connect a series of levers with the mine-doors in such manner that they may be conveniently oper ated by the engineer without the necessity of him leaving his post and manipulate a trap to tilt the bucket when the mine-doors are closed. An arrangement of elements adapted to work in conjunction with a hoisting-engine and the bucket it lifts has the decided advantage of allowing the attendant to look out for his engine, cover the mine-opening, and position his trap without the necessity of leaving his engine or his running the risk of overlooking one or the other of the operations, as he would likely do if they were independently manipulated.
My invention also possesses many other advantages ,which will be hereinafter described, and be particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my dumping and mine-closing apparatus, showing the trap set in the act of tilting a bucket. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, but showing the trap in its normal position and the mine-doors open. Fig. 3 is a detail plan view of the trap. Fig. 4 is a detail side elevation of a modified form of auxiliary frame, the platform and a part of the main frame being shown in dotted lines;

Bars 12 12, forming part of the frame 1, supporta rod 13, on which is mounted an arm 14, connected to the doors 4 by links 15 and 16, disposed on opposite sides of the rod 13. A rod 17 is pivotally connected to the upper end of the arm 14, and to the opposite end of said rod is pivoted a hand-lever l8, pivoted to a support 19, located in proximity to the en-.

An auxiliary frame 20 is constructed adja cent the opening 2 and the frame l to support a bucket-tilting device 22. This de vice is mounted on a cross-rod 23 and com= prises a platform 24:, provided with an approximate central slit 25, which at its open end is flared to more readily receive the projection 11 of the bucket. A V-shaped guide is secured to the platform 24, and its apex 26 is positioned about in line with the cross-rod 23, while its free or outer ends extend be tween the uprights of the frame 1 and rest on arod 28. The tilting device has connected to it a rope or chain 29, which is guided over a pulley 30 onthe frame 20, while the other end of the rope is connected to the upper end of the arm 14. 7
An apparatus thus described the opera tion is substantially as follows Referring to Fig. 2, the doors 4 are open, the tilting device is elevated, and the bucket has just reached its elevated position. The hoistingengine is stopped, whereupon the operator grasps the hand-lever 18 and rocks it in the direction of the arrow 33, which simultaneously closes the doors 4 and permits the tilt ing device to fall on its rod 28. Thus this clined position. The engine 7 is now reversed, causing the projection 11 of the bucket to pass into the slit 25, and owing to the inclination of the platform the bucket will tilt and gradually gravitate toward the apex 26, when it will, as the rope continues device straddles between the uprights of the frame 1 and the auxiliary frame 20 in'an into be slackened, completely upset, dumping its contents into a caror other receptacle 35, as illustrated in Fig. 1. During the dumping of the load of ore the doors 4 4 are closed and all liability of pieces of the ore falling in the opening is avoided, which is of the utmost importance where the diggings are located directly under said opening. The bucket having discharged its load, the operator reverses the engine, which again elevates the bucket. Then the handle 18 is moved in the direction of the arrow 36, which opens the doors l 4; and raises the tilting device 22. The engine is again reversed and the bucket is lowered in the opening 2 for another load. It will therefore be seen that I accomplish in a single operation by a connected mechanism what has heretofore required two actions and separate movements. Furthermore, the operation of my apparatus is accomplished by the operator of the engine without the necessityof his leaving his post. This saves time and expense in many ways and reduces to a minimum the cost of bringing the ore to the surface and at the same time adds safety to those whose duty requires their being in the pit while. the buckets are being dumped.
The frame 37 may be substituted for the frame 20 should it be desired, such frame 37 comprising two approximately V- shaped pieces, the vertical arm 38 of each of which is perforated to receive the shaft 23, and the inclined arm 39 is perforated to receive a suitable fastening device to attach the piece to the frame 1.
lVhat I claim as new is- 1. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination with a frame, a bucket, means for raising and lowering said bucket, a door or doors, mechanism for opening or closing said door or doors, a bucket-tilting device separate from and independent of the doors, means connecting said device with the mechanism for opening the doors, and means for simultaneously operating the door-operatin g mechanism and the tilting device, substantially as described.
2. In an apparatus of the class described,
the combination with a frame, a bucket, means for raising and lowering said bucket, a door or doors, levers for opening or closing said door or doors, a bucket-tilting device having a slit, a loose connection between the buckettilting device and the door-operating levers, and mechanism adjacent the means for raising and lowering the bucket for simultaneously moving the doors and the bucket-tilting device, substantially as described.
3. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination with a frame, a bucket, mechanism for raising and lowering the bucket, a pair of doors over an opening below the bucket, a pivoted arm, a lever each side the pivot of the arm connected to the doors, an auxiliary frame, a swinging tilting device mounted in said auxiliary frame, means connecting the tilting frame and the arm, and mechanism located adjacent the means for raising and lowering the bucket for simultaneously opening or closing the doors or raising or lowering the tilting device, substantially as described.
4. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination with a frame, a bucket, a door or doors, a bucket-tilting device separate from the doors and having independent movement, and means for simultaneously operating the doors and bucket-tilting device.
5. In an apparatus of the class described, in combination with a bucket having a headed projection, of a bucket-tilting device formed witha slot to receive the projection and guide the bucket, and a V-shaped guide arranged in proximity to the slot and adapted to stop the travel of the bucket at the end of the slot.
