WIRE-DRAWING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 738,932, dated September 15, 1903.
Application filed October 6, 1902. Serial No. 126,205. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom it may concern: means are provided for rotating the carrier Be it known that I, JOHN H. ODONNELL, a K and die L, as shown in this instance, the citizen of the United States, and a resident carrier being provided with a hollow shaft or of Waterbury, county of New Haven, and sleeve Q, supported in the frame of the ma State of Connecticut, have invented certain chine andhaving a pulley R for rotating the new and useful Improvements in Wire-Drawsame. The shoulders S of the die-carrier K ingMachines,of which the following is aspeciare provided, as shown, with ball-bearings to fication, accompanied by drawings. take up the end thrust or resist the endwise My invention relates to wire-drawing macompression. 1o chines; and its objects are to improve upon As shown in the drawings, the die-carrier the construction of such'machines and to in- K is also provided with a projecting portion crease their efficiency. T, extending into close proximity to the rolls Another object of my invention is to obtain E and I and. hollowed longitudinally for the a combined compression of the metal on enpassage of the stock to be drawn. The pro- 15 tering the die and a rotary movement bejecting portion T of the die-holder formsan tween the metal and'the die. antihuckling guide or support for the wire as Further objects of my invention will hereitcomes from the rolls and guides the stock inafter appear; and to these ends my invento the rotating die L. The die holder or car tion consists in a wire-drawing machine for rier K is so constructed that dies of difierent 20 carrying out the above objects constructed size may be inserted therein, a portion W of and arranged and having the general mode of the holder being removable and having a operation substantially as hereinafter fully spring-catch Y to adjust it in place. described in this specification and shown in Any suitable means may be provided for the accompanying drawings, in whichadjusting the height of one of the rolls, as 25 Figure 1 is a side elevation of a machine shown in the drawings, there being adjustembodying my invention, shown partly in able vertical screws Z in the frame for varysection. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same, ing the height of the upper roll. partly in section. As hereinbefore stated the metal of the According to my invention a compression stock is compressed between the rolls E and 30 of the metal is obtained on entering the die, I before entering the rotary die, and the rolls and there is a relative rotary movement bealso serve to feed the metal forward. The die L is secured merating equivalents, I claim, and desire to in a suitable revolving carrier K, which is ar-' obtain by Letters Patent, the following: ranged adjacent the rolls E and I. Suitable 1 In a wire-drawing machine, the combination of the die, means for revolving the same to obtain rotary movement between the die and the metal to be drawn, grooved rolls in advance of the die for compressing and pushing the metal through the die, and means for positively rotating said rolls independent of the die and at desired speed with relation thereto, substantially as set forth.
2. In a Wire-drawing machine the combination of a die and means for revolving the same to obtain a rotary movement between the metal to be drawn and the die, means for producing a compression of the metal on ontering the die and antibuckling guides or supports for the metal to be drawn, arranged adjacent the die, substantially as set forth.
3. In a wire-drawing machine the combination of a die and means for revolving the same to obtain a rotary movement between the metal to be drawn and the die, means for producing a compression of the metal on entering the die and antibuckling guides or supports for the metal to be drawn, arranged between the said compressing means and the die, substantially as set forth.
4. In a wire-drawing machine, the combination of grooved rolls for compressing and feeding the metal to be drawn, a die into which the compressed metal is fed from the rolls, means for positively rotating said rolls, and independent means for rotating the die about the compressed metal at the desired speed, substantially as set forth.
5. In a wire-drawing machine, the combination of grooved rolls for compressing and feeding the metal to be drawn, a die into which the compressed metal is fed from the rolls, an antibuckling guide or support between the rolls and die, means for positively rotating said rolls, and independent means for rotating the die about the compressed metal substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
