UPRIGH'T BOILER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 7 38,853, dated September 15, 1903.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES B. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Paterson, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Upright Boilers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to upright boilers; and the objects of the invention are, first, to provide a fire-box and fire-box shell that will give an increased fire-grate area; second, to provide in a boiler a barrel of such a character and construction as "to admit .of a man walking around inside thereof for the purpose of cleaning and obviate the objections to the boilers in vogue, in which access to the parts for cleaning purposes is either difficult or impossible, and, third, to increase the efficiency of boilers by means for the admis sion of air at any or all parts of the walls surrounding the ash-pit and form a centraldraft upright boiler. I attain these objects by the construction illustrated in the accom panying drawings, in whieh- Figure l is a view, partly in front elevation and partly in vertical section on the line 3 in Fig. 2, of a boiler embodying my invention 5 and Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view through boiler and base on the line 0 in Fig. 1.

The boiler is set on a cast-iron or brick ring A, forming the ash-pit A, provided with door a, and a series of openings a with doors a surrounding the ash-pit, the number and size of the same depending upon the circumference and other dimensions of the pit.
The fire-box B is conical-shaped, having a sloping wall C and the crown-sheet c slightly arched, which gives an increased area for the fire-grate 1). Doors b around the fire-box may be provided in numbers according to the size of the boiler.
The lower barrel portion D of the boilershell is slightly conicaLshaped and is much greater in diameter than the upper barrel portion G. It is secured or braced to the fire-box wall 0 by bolts d or other suitable means and is provided with the hand holes d.
The barrel portion E is above the fire-box and is of such a diameter as to permit a man to enter the manhole e and walk around in the space e between the barrel E and the boiler-flues c on the fire-box shell or on the bolts or braces d for the purpose of cleaning theboiler. The conical or sloping barrel portion F connects the portion E to the portion G, which latter portion is of lesser diameter and is provided with the usual top or smoke-chamber I-I.
In operation aside from the facility with which the boiler may be cleaned an efficiency hitherto unattained results from the equalization of draft procured by means of the series of radially-arranged doors or dampers surrounding the ash-pit. The air admitted from many parts of the circumference tends to the center, the combustion is uniform and the whole fuel is subject to the same action.
With this description of my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a boiler, the combination with the fines and the firebox, of a barrel or shell comprising an upper portion, a lower portion above the fire-box of an increased diameter having a manhole, and a sloping or conical portion connecting the upper and lower portion forming a space between the fines the fire-box and the barrel, substantially as set forth.
2. In a boiler, an ash-pit having radiallyarranged doors or dampers, in combination with a conical fire-box having an arched crown-sheet, a conical firebox shell and a cylindrical barrel, comprising an upper portion, a'lower portion having a manhole, and a conical section connecting the upper and lower portions and forming a space between the barrel and the fines and fire-box, substantially as set forth.
3. In an upright boiler, a fire-box having a curved crown-sheet and sloping walls increasing in diameter toward the bottom, in combination with a grate, and an ash-pit having radially-arranged doors in the walls thereof, and a boiler-shell varying in diameter at different points, forming an annular chamber between the shell and the boilerflues, substantially as set forth.
