Beit known thatI,` WILLIS F. EPPERsoN, a citizen'of the United States, residing at Ladoga, in the county of Montgomery and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gluing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention consists in certain im- `provements upon the machine shown and deand efficiency of such a machine are increased,

As best shown by Figs. 2 and 3, the general construction and arrangement of the principal partsof my machine are the same as heretofore'and as illustrated in my said Patent No. 707,219, andconsist, brieliy speaking, of a main body portion containing a receptacle for hot water, steam, and the like, by which the glue is kept'in a liquid condition and to which steam or, hot- water pipes 10 and 11 are connected, said receptacle being preferably composed of an outer shell 12 and a top 13,
the latter of which is also formed to contain` a chamber 14 for the glue.
Y The parts 12 and 14: are shown as secured together by bolts 15, and a gasket or packing-strip-16 is interposed for the purpose of making steam and water tight joint. The 4glue-applying wheel 17 is also" constructed `and arranged substantially as before, and its journals are mounted in bearings on the top 13 in the same manner. In the present case, however, the glue-recep-` tacle is continued upwardly past said bearings nearly to the upper portion of said glueapplying `wheel by means of a box-like .extension- 20. This enables the wheel to be almost completely immersed in the hot glue, with the advantage, among others, that the bearings are 'kept free from cooled or hardened glue, so that the wheel may at all times re- Volve freely, and the journals thereof being at all times immersed in the hot liquid glue need no lubrication. Mounted on the upper side of this box-like extension is a pan 25, surrounding the same, said pan being arranged to receive and hold any glue Which may escape from the wheel while in operation. The central portion 26 of said pan is raised and immediately surrounds the upper edge of the box 20, and the horizontal top part of said central portion comes up near the sides of the glue-applying wheel 17, so that the glue-receptacle, except as to the necessary orifice for said glue-applyingwheel, islsubstantially covered at all times. Secured to said central or top portion alongside the opening for the wheel is a scraper 30, (see especially Fig. 2,) which said scraper as the Wheel revolves acts to prevent too great a quantity of glue from being carried up by the wheel tothe article to which it is being applied. It is necessary in .order to adapt the machine to the variousy classes of work that this scraper should be adjustable, so that a greater or less quantity of glue may be applied under varying circumstances. In order to accomplish this, I have made the pan carrying the scraper adjustable. `.Aidownward extension 27, secured to one end of said pan, has a screw-threaded perforation with which a screw 35 engages, said screw being revolubly but not longitudinally movable, as by having a reduced portion in its shank which fits into a recess formed therefor in a lug 36 on the top 13. The part 27being secured rigidly to the pan 25, turningthe screw 35 will move said pan longitudinally,and thus cause the scraper carried by said pan to approach or recede from thewheelhwhereby the desired adjustment issecured. Studs or stops 1S and 19 on the upper surfaceof the top 13 guide and limit this movement,the part 27 having a bifurcated foot 28, which passes astride the stud 18, while a corre-` IDO The pan is removable. It is held in lplace by the following means: A postor standard 37 extends upwardly from the top 13 at a point to one side of and near to the lug or ear 36, and upon the top of this post'orstandard is pivotally held a latchbar 45, preferably by means of a pivot-screw 46, and said latch-bar engages with a catch 47, which is shown as an extension from the upper portion of the part 27. When said latch-bar is swung around over said catch between the same and the bottom of the pan 25, it holds that end of said pan to which it is attached securely in place, as will be readily understood. On the opposite end of the pan is the member 40, which, as before stated, extends down and has a foot 41, which rests on the top 13, and the bifurcated end of which passes out astride the stud 19 and extends nearly to the end of said top 13. A latch-bar is pivoted to the top 13, and when it is swung over the point of the foot 41, as best shown in Figs. 2 and 6, it securely holds that end of the pan to which the structure 40 is attached to the main body of the device, the foot 41 in this arrangement forming a catch. When the latch- bars 45 and 50 are swung back, the pan is free to be removed, as the recess in the lug 36 is open at the top, so that the bolt 35 may lift out freely when the pan is raised.
A funnel-like extension 21 is formed at the rear side of the central portion 26 of the pan 25, which enables the liquid glue to be poured in conveniently from time to time to replen ish the supply as may be needed. This,
however, necessitates that the guide-bar shall be removable, so that the pan and attached parts can be removed'. That this may conveniently be done the horizontal portions of the standards 61, to which said guide-bar `is attached, are slitted in their ends, and the bolts 62 therefore need not be removed, but only loosened slightly to permit the guidebar 60 to be slipped off, as will be readily'understood.
Having thus fully described my said inven'- tion, what I claim as new, and desire to secure lby Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, in a gluing-machine, of the glue-receptacle having walls extending to above the trunnions of the glue-applyingy wheel, bearings for said trunnions inside of said Walls, a glue-applying Wheel revolubly of a glue-receptacle, a glue-applying wheel revolubly mounted in said receptacle, said receptacle being provided with sides which extend nearly to the top of said wheel above the journals thereof, and a pan mounted on the top of said receptacle and forming a cover therefor and provided with a slit through which the upper edge of said wheel extends, the portion of said pan adjacent to said wheel being raised above the bottom, and the surrounding portions arranged to form a receptacle for the escaping surplus glue, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, in a gluing-machine, of a glue-receptacle, a pan mounted thereon and forming a removable cover therefor, au
slit in said pan forming an opening through which the upper edge of the glue-applying wheel extends, said glue-applying wheel, and a funnel-like spout attached to said cover portion through which the supply of liquid glue in the receptacle may be replenished without removing the pan or cover, substantially as set forth. v
4. The combination, in a gluing-machine, of a glue-receptacle the walls whereof extend up around the glue-applying wheel, said glueapplying wheel suitably journaled therein, a cover portion mounted on the top of said receptacle, a scraper edge thereon alongside the edge of said glue-applying wheel which rises as the Work progresses, feet secured to the under side of said cover and extending down to the surface ofthe machine, latches engaging therewith for holding the cover in place, a screw engaging with one of said feet, and a lug on the frame 0f the machine'engaging with said screw, whereby the pan or cover carrying the scraper may be adjusted in respect to the wheel and the quantity of glue to be delivered by the wheel thus regulated, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination, in a gluing-machine, of a body portion comprising the glue receptacle, a glue applying wheel revolubly mounted in said glue-receptacle, the sides of 'said receptacle extending upwardly nearly to lthe top of said wheel, a removable. panflike Icover mounted on said receptacle, catches (as 47 and 41) secured to the underside of said pan, and swinging latches (as 45 and 50) pivl oted to the frame or body of the machine and adapted to swing over said catches andthus secure the pan in place,substantially as shown and described. l
6. The combination, in a gluing-machine, of the frame or body, a glue-receptacle therein, a glue-applying wheel revolubly mounted in said receptacle, a pan or cover mounted on said receptacle and provided with downwardly-extending portions terminating in bifurcated feet resting upon the top of the frame or body, said frame or body, being provided with guiding-lugs astride which the bifurcated feet pass, and means for removably securing the pan in place on said frame or body, substantially as set forth.

7. The combination, in a gluing-machine, of the frame or body, a gluing-receptacle therein, a glue applying Wheel revolubly mounted in said receptacle, a removable pan or cover mounted on said receptacle around said wheel, ascraper carried thereby adjacent to said Wheel, means for removably securing 3 the pan orcover inplac'e, and other means for adjusting said pan or cover as a Whole relatively to said Wheel.
. 8. The combination, in a gluingmachine, of a frame or4 body embodying a 'glue-receptacle, a glue applying Wheel revolubly mounted in said receptacle, a cover removably in respect to said lug, whereby adjustment of said cover is provided for Without preventing its removability, substantially as shown and described.
9. The combination, in a gluing-machine, of a frame or body containing a gluereceptacle, a glue applying Wheel revolubly mounted in said receptacle,a removable cover on said receptacle in which a funnel-like spout is secured for the introduction of the liquid glue, a guide-bar mounted above said glue applying wheel for guiding the material to be glued, said spout being positioned behind said bar and said bar being removable to permit the cover including said spout to be removed When desired, substantially as shown .and described.
