Description

d UNITED STAT-Es` Patented September 8, 1903.
PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT W. HIGHT, OF BALLARD, WASHINGTON, ASSIGNOR TO THE WASH- INGTON PULLEY COMPANY.
PU LLEY-FASTENING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 738,611, dated September 8, 1903..
' Application filed May l5, 1902. Serial No. 107,404. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT W, HIGHT, a
citizen of the UnitedV States,` and a resident` means for preventing the slipping of split pulleys on their shafts.
The invention is especially applicable to that class of pulleys in which the sections are held by U-bolts or clevises passing through the pulley-sections and encircling the shaft.
My invention, involves certain improvements in the key for engaging the U-bolt with the shaft. .i This specification is an exact description of two examples of my "invention, while the claims define the actual scope thereof. 'n
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which simlar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.
Figure-1 is a sectional View showing the invention applied, and Fig. 2 is a detail view of the key.
Referring to the drawings, b indicates the lshaft and a the sections of the split pulley.
c indicates the U-bolts, which are passed through the respective sections a and made to embrace the shaft b, as shown. One or both of the U-bolts carry the keys d, which l ment of .the'shaft in both directions. Formed on the outer face d of the key and intermedi- A ate the ends thereof is a stud or projection e, which is adapted to be engaged with the clevis or U -bolt in a manner to be hereinafter more fully explained, so that the key and clevis will act as one part. When the clevis or U-bolt is drawn up tightly into place, the points or projections cl2 are forced against the shaft and the clevis, and consequently the pulley-sections are prevented from independent movement on the shaft. Owingto the opposite disposition of the projections d2, they hold the parts irrespective of the direction in which they tend to turn.
' In constructing the device the key is placed in a punch or other suitable holding-tool and the U-bolt or clevis is softened by heat. The projection e of thekey is then forced into the heat-softened U-bolt, and finally the U-bolt is cooled to shrink it around the projection e, thus securely fastening the two parts to- 'gethern 4Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters l. A pulley-fastening, comprising a key having a concave inner side terminating at each end in a sharp projection, said projections being oppositely disposed, the outer side Aof the key being convexedly and uniformly `curved, and a stud or projection rigidly carried p on the key and projecting from the said outer side thereof, for the purpose specified.
. 2. A pulley-fastening, comprising a key having a concave inner side terminating at each end in a sharp projection, said projection being oppositely disposed, the outer side of the key being convexedly and uniformly curved, and a stud or projection rigidly carried on the key and projecting from the said outer side thereof, for the purpose specified, the outer side of the key being grooved longitudinally of the key to provide a seat fora Ushaped bolt used in thepulley.
In testimony whereof I- have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
ALBERT W. EIGHT.
