PATENT O rricn.
JOSEPH W. MADISON, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK;
MACHINE FOR CAPPlNG BOTTLES;
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 738,219, dated September 8, 190a Application filed May 9, 1903. Serial No. 156,3 0- (N d T0 aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH XV. MADISON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Capping Bottles, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved machine for capping bottles with tin-foil or other soft flexible metal after the stopper has been applied; and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in a machine of the class specified constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of myimprovement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a side View of a bottle-capping machine made according to my invention; Fig. 2, a front view thereof; Fig. a vertical section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2, and Fig. l a plan view.
In the practice of my invention 1 provide a machine of the class specified comprising a base a and two upright frame members (0 which are secured to the base and in the top portion of which is mounted a shaft a provided at one side thereof centrally with a cam-wheel 7) and centrally with a gear-wheel U The upright frame members a are also provided at their upper ends with backwardly and upwardly directed arms 0, in which is mounted a shaft 0 provided at one end with a fly-wheel c and at the other with a fixed pulley c and loose pulley c and the shaft 0 is also provided with a gear-wheel c, which is smaller than the gear-wheel b and operates in connection therewith.
Mounted on the base a and in front of the frame members a is a stationary jaw (Z, which may be formed integrally with the base a, or said jaw may be formed separately and be secured to said base, and said jaw is provided in the top thereof with a rubber bushing (1 and over the jaw (Z is a vertically-movable jaw e, in which placed a rubber bushing 6 similar to the corresponding bushing (Pin the jaw (Z. The jaw e is provided with a backwardly-directed arm 6 which is pivoted to supports 6 connected with the base a, as shown at 8 and beneath the arm 6 of the jaw e is a spring 6', which normally serves to force said jaw upwardly.
Pivoted to the top of the jaw e at f is a socket member g, in the sides of which are vertically-arranged slots g through which is passed a pin g, which passes through the lower end of the screw-threaded shank h of a yoke 7L2, and mounted on the shank h of the yoke 7L2 is a set-nut 7L3, below which is placed a spring h, which has abearing 71. in the top of the socket member g. The opposite sides of the yoke 7L2 are provided at their upper ends with vertically-arranged slots or recesses h, which open upwardly and through which the shaft 7L3 passes, and the cam-wheel b is secured to the shaft (6 between the sides of the yoke ]L2, and in the bottom portion Of said yoke is a power wheel or roller t', on or in connection with which the cam-wheel b operates The machine is driven in the usual manner by means of the pulleys c and c and as the shaft a is turned the cam-wheel b, acting on the wheel or roller 2, and the spring a, be neath the jaw e or the arm 6 thereof, produce a constant vertical movement of the jaw e, and in practice the necks of the bottles to be capped are successively fed into the opening j, between the jaws (Z and e, in the usual manner. It will be understood that the material with which the necks of the bottles are to be capped is placed thereon in the usual way, and vertical movement of the jaws d and 6 simply secure the metal around the ends of the necks of the bottles in the usual manner, this operation being accomplished by the vertical movement of the jaw c and the rubber bushings d and c In this operation the force of the downward movement of the jaw e is broken to an extent by the spring h, which operates between the set-nut 77, and the socket member g, this result being accomplished by reason of the fact that the shank h of the yoke 7L2 is movable in said socket member, and by reason of this fact the danger of breaking the bottles is largely obviated. The tension of the spring k may be regulated as desired by the nut h and the force applied to the jaw e to force it downwardly will be correspondingly regulated, and it will be understood that the spring 6 operates to raise the jaw e and all the parts connected therewith when the cam-wheel b is not in contact with the wheel or roller 2 Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters I Patent, is'
1. In a machine of the class described, a frame,a shaft mounted in the top part thereof, a cam-wheel secured to said shaft, a stationary jaw in the bottom of the frame, a vertically movable jaw operating in connection therewith, a spring for forcing said jaw upwardly, a socket member pivoted to the vertically-movable jaw, a yoke provided with a screw-threaded shank which passes into the socket member, a pin passing through said shank and through vertical slots in the socket member, a set-nut mounted on said shank, a spring placed between the set-nut and the socket member, and a roller mounted in the bottom portion of said yoke and in connection with which the cam-wheel operates, the sides of said yoke being provided with slots through which said shaft passes, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a machine of the class described, a frame, a shaft mounted in the top thereof and provided with a cam-wheel, means for driving said shaft, a stationary jaw in the bottom of said frame, a vertically-movable jaw placed thereo ver and operating in connection therewith, a spring for raising the vertically-movable jaw, a vertically-arranged yoke in operative connection with the vertically-movable jaw and the sides of which are provided with vertical slots or openings through which said shaft passes, a roller mounted in the bottom portion of said yoke and in connection with which the cam-wheel operates, and means for regulating the force applied to the verticallymovable jaw by the cam-wheel, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 7th day of May, 1903.
JOSEPH XV. MADISON.
