TROLLEY-POLE OF ELECTRIC TRAM-CARS OR THE LIKE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 788,193, dated September 8, 1903. Application filed January 15, 1903. Serial No. 139,205. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CARL RASMUS FRED- ERIK HonnEL, shop superintendent, of a St. Knudsvej, and REINHOLDT J OHAN HOMMEL, engineer, of 9 Mathildevej, Frederiksberg, near Copenhagen, in the Kingdom of Denmark, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Connection with the Trolley- Poles of Electric Train-Oars or the Like; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to characters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in trolley-poles, and has for its object the provision of means to prevent the trolley-pole being forced upward when the contact-roller jumps off the line-wire,thereby preventing the free end of the pole from knocking against the line-wire stays or suspensions.
Arrangements for controlling the trolleypole have been designed to act on the cord hanging from contact-roller and placed at the rear of the car. Such devices are uncertain in their action, and the way they are mounted on the car is inconvenient.
The device forming the subject-matter of this invention is mounted on top of the car and is directly connected to the trolley-pole and is so constructed that as soon as the contact has slipped off the wire the pole will be pulled down below the wire, thereby preventing it from striking the line-wire suspensions.
Referring to the drawings, in which like parts are similarly designated, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is a rear view of Fig. l, and Figs. 3 to 7 are details.
A suitable base-plate 10 carries a fixed bolt 1), on which is rotatable a sleeve b, to which sleeve is also pivoted at a the trolley-pole a. This pole is urged against the line-wire by any suitable or convenient device, which,
' however, does not form part of this invention.
Rigidly secured to the sleeve 1) is a pin 0, having a reduced free end 0 and provided with a groove 11 nearthe sleeve b. Over the grooved portion. is fitted a sleeve 6, having a projection 12, in which is a hole 13 to retain one end of a coil-spring d. A set-screw 14, passing through the sleeve 6, takes into the groove 11 and holds the sleeve in any desired angular position on the pin, thereby increas ing or decreasing the tension of the spring (1-. The other end of the coil-spring is held in a hole f on a rock-arm g, that is mounted on the reduced end 0 of the pin 0. This arm g is forked and has between the forks a Web 2', and on one of the forks is formed a boss 77., that fits inside the end of the coil d to support it. Pivoted in the forked end of the lever g at q is a pawl 19, Figs. 5 and 6, having lateral projections ,2, on which take the noses y, one on eachfork of thelever. Thepawl 1) has secured to its shank an ear u, to which is connected one end of a rod o, whose other end passes through an eye 10, rotatably mounted on the trolley-pole a, and carries a stop so, adjustable along the rod 1) above the eye w. A spring 7', secured to the web 2', urges the pawl 19 against a disk 25, rigidly mounted on the reduced portion 0 of the pin a and between the forks of lever g. This disk has two teeth one, 5, against which the pawl is nominally held, and one, 15, acting as a stoptolimit the upward movement of lever g and against which the end of the web t' strikes. On the end of the lever g is an car 70, to which the lower end of the rod on is pivoted, the upper end of this rod passing through a revoluble eye a on the trolley-pole a, and below the eye it is a stop 0, adjustable along the rod m.
The operation is as follows: \Vhen the contact-roller slips off the line-wire, the trolleypole a is swung upward, the eye w striking the stop an, thereby tripping the pawl 13 and allowing the lever g to be urged upward by the coil-spring cl. During the turning of the lever g the noses y engage the projections .e' on the pawl 19 and the two move as a unit around the pin 0, thereby pulling down rod o and the trolley-pole a. This rotation will if the spring be sufficiently wound continue until the web 2' strikes the tooth 15. TVhen the trolley-pole is pulled farther down by means of the usual cord, the eye a will strike the stop 0, depress the lever rewind the spring, and simultaneously elevate the rod o and cause the pawl p to ride over the disk I Said pawl will then be forced to its seat when sufficiently rotated by the spring 7' to hold the lever g in normal position.
Having thus described our said invention, what we claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a pivoted trolleypole, of a lever connected with and rotatable transversely to the movement of said pole, mechanism for locking the lever against rotation, and means actuated by the pole for releasing the locking mechanism, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a pivoted trolleypole, of a lever connected therewith, mechan-. ism for rotating the lever transversely to the movement of said pole, mechanism for looking the lever against rotation, means actuated by the pole for releasing the locking mechanism, and means actuated by the lever for returning the lever to its locked position, substantially as described.
3. The combination with a trolley-pole, of a lever rotatable about a pin, a spring to rotate the lever, a pawl to hold the lever in normal position, and a rod actuated by the trolley-pole when it slips off the line-wire to release said lever, to draw the trolley-pole down, substantially as described.
l. The combination with a trolley-pole, of a lever rotatable about a pin, a spring to rotate the lever, a pawl to hold the lever in normal position, means to release the pawl to allow the lever to be rotated by the spring, a stop to limit the rotation of the lever, and means actuated by the depression of the trolley-pole to return the parts into normal position, substantially as described.
5. The combination with a bolt and a trolley rotatable about the same, of a pin also rotatable about said bolt, a spiral spring on said pin, a lever rotatable on the end of the pin by said spring, a pawl pivoted to said lever to hold it ready to operate, means actuated by the trolley-pole to trip the pawl to release the lever, and means connected to the lever and operated by depressing the trolley-pole to return the parts to normal position, substantially as described.
6. The combination with a bolt and a trolleypole rotatable about the same, of a substantially horizontal pin, a coil-spring thereon, a forked lever rotatable on the pin, a toothed disk fixed on said pin between the forks of the lever, a pawl pivoted to one end of the lever and adapted to engage the disk, a rod pivoted to the pawl, an eye on the trolley-pole through which the rod passes and an adjustable stop on the rod above the eye, substantially as described.
7. The combination with a bolt and atrolleypole rotatable about the same, of a substantially horizontal pin, a coil-spring thereon, a forked lever rotatable on the pin and having a web extending between the forks for apart of theirlength, a disk having two teeth fixed on the pin between the forks of the lever, a springurged pawl pivoted at one end of the lever and normally engaging one tooth on the disk, a rod pivoted to the pawl, an eye on the trolleypole through which said rod passes, a stop adjustable along the rod above the eye, a second rod pivoted to one end of the lever, a second eye on the trolley-pole, through which the second rod passes and a stop adjustable along the rod below the eye, substantially as described.
