SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 737,852, dated September I, 1903.

Be it known that I, EARNEST LOHSAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ohicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Vehicles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates particularly to roadgoing vehicles; and my primary object is to provide an automobile of improved general construction, though,-as will be understood from the following description, the invention is applicable to horse-drawn vehicles.
.The invention is illustrated in its preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 represents a side elevational view of an automobile embodying my invention, certain parts being removed; Fig. 2, a plan sectional view looking, down upon the running-gears of the vehicle; Fig. 3, a vertical sectional view taken as indicated at line 3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4, an enlarged broken vertical section taken as indicated at line 4: of Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 a broken view taken as indicated at line 5 of Fig. 4.
The preferredconstruction is as follows:
' A A, B B, and C 0 represent the sets of wheels of the vehicle; D D D, the axles of the vehicle; E, a sprocket-wheel through which power is applied to the shaft D; F, sprocket wheel and chain connections between the shaft D and the shaft D; G, similar connections between D and the shaft D H, the vehicle body or box; I, the steeringgear, and J brake mechanism.
The front and intermediate axles are provided with universal joints K, affording dirigible spindles K for the front and intermediate wheels. Each spindle is equipped with a wheel-frame L, having vertical standards L and horizontal members L L Each member'of each wheel-frame comprises two members separated by a sufficient space to accommodate the wheel, and the two members of each standard L are bent inwardly at their upper portions to aiford a projection or bracket L The inner member of each standard L is provided at its base with an inward projection or bracket L The inner ends of the brackets L L are connected by a vertical stud or guide L, which projects upwardly beyond the bracket L and through a bushing L with which the body H is provided. Confined between the bushings L and brackets L are springs L which surround the upper portions of the studs L. Above the bushings L the studs L are equipped with collars L", which move in housings L. The box H is provided with a plurality of lateral projections M, having perforations or slots through which the vertical members L ex tend freely, and the box is also provided with a plurality of downward extensions M, pro-- vided with slots M engaging the axles at reduced portions or circumferential grooves M The wheel-frames may be covered with netting or any other suitable material, if desired. The front wheel-frames are equipped with inwardly-projecting U-shaped arms N, and the intermediate wheel frames are equipped with similar arms N, of greater length, however.
The steeringgear I comprises a vertical shaft a, journaled in a suitable bearing in the bottom of the vehicle-body; a handle a, attached to the upper end of said shaft; a lever a rigidlyconnected with the lower end of said shaft; rods a connecting the extremities of the lever a? with the inner ends of the arms N, and rods a connecting the arms N with the arms N.

The manner of use and features of advantage will be readily understood from the fore- Power is applied to the axle D from any suitable motor and is communicated from the said axle to the other axles through suitable sprocket Wheels and chains, as indicated. Compensating gears are employed Where necessary. When the steering-handle a. is turned in either direction, the bar or lever (1, is correspondingly turned, thereby causing the front and intermediate sets of wheels to turn correspondingly. By reason of the fact that the arms N are longer than the arms N the front wheels are turned more than the intermediate wheels, the proper ratio being secured in de signing the arms to cause the wheels to move naturally and without slipping. When it is desired to apply the brake, the upper end of the hand-lever J is drawn backwardly, thereby drawing the links I) b forwardly, straightening the toggle-levers formed by the links I) b and depressing the blocks b into engagement with the road.
As will be readily understood, a vehiclebody supported upon three sets of wheels is subjected to much less jolting than one supported upon two sets of 'Wheels. Thus either set of wheels may pass over an obstacle without the box being raised perceptibly. In like manner either set of wheels may pass into a depression Without the box partaking of the motion. While for ordinary purposes it is sufficient to support the vehicle-body at three transverse lines, yet it may be advantageous in some instances to employ more than three sets of wheels. In any case the rear axle may be without universal joints, or universal joints may be employed thereat also. Such spindles as are dirigible should be connected to be simultaneously controlled.
The improved brake mechanism enables the vehicle to be brought to a stop quickly without injury to the wheels of the vehicle.
It will be understood that, if desired, a pole may be connected in any suitable manner with the front wheel-frames or front spindles and the shaft a and attendant handsteering mechanism .dispensed with, if desired. This would convert the vehicleinto a horse-drawn vehicle, and many of the features of advantage hereinbefore explained would be retained.
Changes in details of construction within the spirit of my invention may be made.
Hence no undue limitation should be undertransverse lines, and steering means for turning the front and intermediate wheels simultaneously in the same direction with relation to the vehicle-body, for the purpose set forth.
2. In a vehicle, the combination of abody, three or more sets of wheels, axles connecting said wheels, spring-supporting standards connected with the end portions of said axles, and springs confined between the upper portions of said standards and said box, for the purpose set forth.
3. In a vehicle, the combination of a body, three or more sets of wheels, axles connecting said wheels, two of said axles being provided with dirigible spindles connected by universal joints, spring-su pporting standards connected with said spindles, springs thereon supporting said box, and a steering-gear connected with said spindles, whereby said spindles may be simultaneously turned with relation to the vehicle-body, for the purpose set forth.
4. In a vehicle, the combination of a body, Wheels, axles connecting said wheels in pairs, and having universal joints affording dirigible spindles, wheel-frames connected with said spindles having inwardly projecting brackets, vertical studs connected with said brackets and extending through suitable guides on said body, and springs confined between said projections and said body, for the purpose set forth.
5. In a vehicle, the combination of a body, wheels, axles connecting said wheels in pairs, and having universal joints affording dirigible spindles, wheel-frames connected with said spindles having inwardlyprojecting brackets, vertical studs connected with said brackets and extending through suitable guides on said body, springs confined between said projections and said body, inwardly-projecting arms connected with said wheelframes, and steering-gear connected with said arms.
6. In a vehicle the combination of a body, wheels, axles connecting said wheels in pairs and provided with universal joints provided with dirigible spindles, Wheel-frames connected with said spindles and supporting said body, inwardly-projecting arms connected with said wheel-frames, one set of arms being of greater length than the other set, links connecting corresponding arms, and means for moving one set of arms, for the purpose set forth.
7.
