Fig. 4 illustrates a machine working on level ground with both ends of the bar at the same elevation. In this position the reelpost is truly vertical, and the reel drive-shaft f occupies nearly a vertical plane fore and aft of the machine. Any elevation of the cutting apparatus, and especially any such elevation of the outer end of the finger-bar, as indicated in Fig. 3, tilts the reel-supporting post 9 over toward the stubble side of the machine, and in order for the telescopic shaft to drive the reel-shaft in its tilted position it is necessary that it should move bodily with the reel-post; This lateral movement of the diagonal shaft is permitted by means of the yokes d and d being pivotally connected by their arms, respectively, to the arms of the yokes c and c on lines at right angles to the pivotal connection of the latter yokes with the axle of the machine and the reel-shaft. The diagonal shaft has therefore a universal-joint connection at its lower end with the part which drives it and at its upper end with the part which is driven by it, and the result of this connection is that the length and position of the shaft will automatically accommodate itself to the vertical adjustments of the reel, and the shaft will also accommodate itself as regards its lateral position and inclination with the tilting movements of the reehpost due to the causes already mentioned.
Having thusdescribed my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with the inner shoe of amower, of a post rising therefrom, a reel supported by said post, a gear on the inner end of the axle of the machine, a gear on the reel-shaft, and a line-shaft having gears at opposite ends meshing with the gears on the machine-axle and reelshaft, and yokes in which the line-shaft is journaled at its ends said yokes pivoted on a line passing through the points of tangency of the pitch-lines between the gears.
2. The combination with the inner shoe of a mower, of a post rising therefrom, a reel supported by said post, a yoke on the inner end of the axle of the machine, a similar yoke on the reel-shaft, gears on the axle and reelshaft adjacent to said yokes, and a line-shaft having gears at its ends meshing with the gears on the axle and reel-shaft, said lineshaft being journaled at its ends in yokes pivoted to the first-named yokes in a line passing through the points of tangency of the pitch-lines between the gears.
3. The combination with a reel-post, of a reel and its shaft adjustably supported on the post, a telescopic driving-shaft pivoted at its lower end, intermeshing gears on the reelshaft and upper end of the telescopic shaft, a yoke journaled on the reel-shaft and having oppositely-projecting radial arms, and a similar yoke in'which the upper end of the telescopic shaft is journaled, said yokes be ing pivotally connected by their arms on a ICC line passing through the points of tangency of the pitch-lines between the gears.
4:. The combination with a reel-post, of a reel and its shaft adj ustably supported on the post, a telescopic drive-shaft having a gear connection with the reel-shaft, a yoke journaled on the inner end of the axle of the machine and having oppositely-projecting radial arms, a similar yoke in which the lower end of the telescopic shaft is journaled, and intermeshing gears connecting the axle and telescopic shaft, said yokes being pivoted together by their arms on a line passing through the points of tangency of the pitch-lines between the gears.
