Too/ll whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, Trro LIVIOCARBONE, a subjectof the King of Italy, residing at Gru'newald, near Berlin, in the Kingdom of Prussia, German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Arc-Lamps 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the in vention.
v In a separate application filed March 25, 1903, Serial No. 149,583, a similar invention is disclosed; but the subj cot-matter of the said application is not claimed specifically herein. The present invention relates to means for. influencing magnetically the arcof electric= arc lamps in order to obtain a very bright, steady, and White light, 'whilethe carbons burn up without residues. The magneticeffect may be obtained most simply by arranging an iron ring close to and above the arc, the ring being transversed by lines of magnetic inductionproduced by a coil, the
lines being led to and from said ring by means of two iron rods and passing between two opposite points of the ring, The lines of force coming from the north pole are thus divided and pass to the southpoleth'rough the two halves of the ring. An auxiliary iron rod is used so that the magnetically-influenced arc is exactly in the center of the iron ring. The auxiliary iron rod may project as an anglearm from the one iron rod and may reach close to the connection-point of the ring with the other iron rod, or the auxiliary iron rod may be arranged vertically movable on the one side of the coil, so that it may be adjusted Instead of using the auxiliary iron rod a coil may be arranged horizontally movable on its iron core, so that the magnetically-influenced arc is exactly in the center of the iron ring. I
The subject of the present invention is diagrammatically represented in the annexed drawings.
It is understood that the arc passes between two pairs of carbons, meeting oneanother at an acute angle,'tho'ugh my invention is not limited to this arrangement of the carbons. Both carbon rods of each carbon pair face one another with their flat sides and touch one another only at their lower ends where the arc iliaryiron rod projects as an angle-arm from one'iron rod. Fig.2 shows the two. pairs of carbon rods in plan view. Fig. 3 is a device in which the auxiliary iron rod is vertically movable on oneside of the coil. Fig. ishows a device in-which the coil can be moved horizontally on its iron core.

In the device shown in Fig. 1 the angle-arm 6, serving as an auxiliary iron rod, projects from the rod 12 and terminates near to the connection-place ofthe ring a at the lower end of the iron rod 0. The angle-arm 6 can be adjusted' higher or lower within a slot 1) and maybe clamped,'by means of the nut b at that height where. the magnetically-influenced arc is-exactlyin the center of the iron ring a, which may easily be found by experiment.
In the device shown in Fig. 3 the auxiliary iron rod fis movable on the one side of the coil within a socket g and. can be clamped at the desired height by means of a set-screw h, so that the arc is exactly in the center of the ring a.
In the device shown in Fig. 4 the coil (1, wound on a spool 1c, is horizontally movable with respect to its iron core and can be adjusted in the desired position between the two iron rods 1) c by means of the screw 1' in such a manner that the arc is exactly in the center of the ring a.
Having now described my invention and in what manner thesaineis to be performed, what I claim, and desire ,to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In arc-lamps, the combination with the carbons of an electromagnet, iron rods secured to opposite poles of said magnet, and an iron ring surrounding the carbons above the arc and carried by said rods at diamet It is car-.
rically opposite points, substantially described.
2. In arc-lamps, the combination with the carbons of an electromagnet, iron rods secured to opposite poles of said magnet, an iron ring surrounding the carbons above the arc and carried by said rods at diametrically opposite points, and adjusting means for maintaining the arc in a definite position in relation to the magnet connections, substantially as described.
3. In arc-lamps, the combination with the carbons of an electromagnet, iron rods secured to opposite poles of said magnet, an iron ring surrounding the carbons above the arc and carried by said rods at diametrically opposite points, and a verticallymovable iron rod for adjusting the arc in a definite position in relation to the magnet connections, substantially as described.
