OOOOOO L.
WiTNESSES UNITED STATES Patented August 25, 1903.
PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE P. OATES, OE SPRINGFIELD, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO AMERICAN SEED- ING MACHINE COMPANY, OF JERSEY CITY, NEYV JERSEY, A CORPORA- TION OF NEW JERSEY.
DISTRIBUTER FOR GRAIN-DRILLS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 737,011, dated August 25, 1903. Application filed May s. 1903. semi No. 156,157. die model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known thatl, GEORGE P. OATES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Clark and State of Ohio,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Distributers for Grain-Drills, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to seeding-machines, and more particularly to grain-distributors to such as shown and described in Letters Patent No. 691,483, granted to C. E. Patric January 21, 1902.
Heretofore the casings for the distributers have been attached to the lower edge of the I; seedbox or hopper sides, and after much experience with this construction, in which it is necessary to employ four screws for each distributor, it has been found that the wood is frequently split and damaged by the screws,
23 and especially when it is necessary to place the distributors in close proximity to each other the strength of the hopper sides between the adjacent mortises becomes much impaired.
23 The object of my invention is to improve the construction in such a manner as will permit the distributer being attached and held firmly in place by means of a single screw passing through both sides of the hopper,
said screw also forming a pivot upon which the reversing plate or shield is hinged for feeding the grain to one'side or the other of the distributer-wheels, as desired.
My invention consists of the constructions and combinations hereinafter-described and set forth in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a seed-hopper, o partly broken away, showing a graindis tributer in position therein with attachments embodying my invention. showing mortises in the sides of the hopper, and Fig. 3 is a detail of side pieces for the 5 distributer-casing.
Like parts are represented by similar letters of reference in the several views.
In the drawings, a represents a hopper, and b a distributer-wheel having a casing 19, adapted to be let into the hopper through an Fig. 2 is a detail opening in the bottom of the hopper, mortisesa in the side Walls at the respective ends of said opening permitting the insertion and holding the casing from lateral movement. The casing extends upwardly to form a partition b in the hopper; but as its ends must be substantially parallel to permit its insertion through the opening in the bottom, while the sides of the hopper are flaring, 1 provide supplementary wedge-shaped pieces Z2 to fill the space and complete the partition between the casing and side walls. Said pieces I) are grooved on one edge, as shown in Fig. 3, to fit over and engage the respective sides of the partition, and are further provided with perforated lugs b at their upper ends by which they are held in place, as hereinafter described. One side of the distributorwheels is adapted to feed coarse and the other side fineseed, and a reversible shield c is provided to form a cut-off on either side of the wheel while the other side is open. The upper edge of the partition 12 is provided with perforated lugs 19", and the upper edge of the shield is provided with perforated lugs c. A spindle d, secured to the respective sides of the hopper and passing through the per- 'forations in the lugs b 0', and b, secures the distributor and casing in place in the hopper, forms a pivot upon which the shield is hinged, and also secures the supplementary pieces 19 in position. The spindle d I have shown in the form of a screw having a slotted head at one end and a screw-thread at the other; but it is obvious'it may be secured to the side frames in any suitable manner. In piercing the sides of the hopper for the reception of .the spindle the holes are so disposed that when the spindle is inserted it will draw up the distributor and easing with the flanges b firmly against the bottom of the hopper.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. The combination with a hopper, a distributor-wheel and a casing for said Wheel, of
.a spindle secured to the respective sides of said hopper and'engaging said casing to hold said casing and distributor-wheel in place, substantially as specified. 1
2. The combination with a hopper, a. dis- I00 tributer-wheel and casing for said wheel, said hopper having an opening in the bottom thereof through which said casing extends, of a spindle secured to the respective side Walls of said hopper and engaging said casing to support said casing and wheel in place, substantially as specified.
3. The combination with a hopper, a distribnter-wheel and a casing for said wheel having projections thereon, said hopper having an opening in the bottom thereof through which said casing extends with said projections engaging the under side of said hopper, of a spindle engaging said casing and secured to the respective sides of said hopper to draw and hold said casing and distribute!- wheel in place, substantially as specified.
' 4. The combination with a hopper and a spindle extending transversely through said hopper and secured to the respective sides thereof, of a distributer-Wheel and a casing for said wheel held in place by said spindle, and a shield hinged to said spindle and adapted to cut off the seed from either side of said distributer-wheel, substantially as specified.
5. The combination with a hopper having an opening in the bottom thereof and a spindle extending transversely through. said hopper and secured to the respective sides thereof, of a distributer wheel and a casing for said wheel extending through said opening and held in place by said spindle, a partition in said hopper formed in part by said casing and a shield hinged to said spindle and adapted to cut off the seed from either side of said distributor-wheel, substantially as specified.
6. The combination of a hopper having an opening in the bottom thereof, wedge-shaped mortises in the hopper sides, a distributerwheel and a casing for same adapted to extend into said hopper through said opening and mortises, wedge-shaped pieces adapted to engage said casing and extend to the side walls of the hopper, a shield for said wheel, perforated lugs on said casing, wedge-shaped pieces and shield, and a spindle extending through the perforations in said lugs and secured to the side walls of the hopper.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 5th day of May, A. D. 1903.
. GEORGE P. OATES.
