. IMPROVEMENT 1N EUcKLEs.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY GONCERN:

Be it known that I, HEIMANN NEUMANN, of the city, county, and State ot' New York, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Buckles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing formingpart of this speoitication,.in which drawiugi Figure 1 is a plan view of a buckle, made according to my invention.

Figure 2 is a modification thereof.

Figure 3 shows a buckle as it appears when the fre-e oud of the tongue is about to be swung out. of the frame to receive the free end of a belt or strap.

This invention relatesvto buckles, for securing belts or straps in wearing-apparel, and lfor other purposes where buckles can be applied, and more especially to buckles of the character set forth in Letters Patent granted to me on the twelfth day of February, 1867.. I l

p The present improvement consists in so constructing and arranging the tongue and the side bars, one or both, of the buckle-frame, that the free end of the tongue will be free to swing out of the frame when it is turned backwards from the front bar, thereby permitting the belt or strap, or other article which is to be fastened, to be slipped on or doubled over said tongue,`and the free end of the tongue to be, in the next place, swung back again through the frame into a position where it `can be moved forwards toward the front bar of the frame, in order to pinch or hold the belt or strap fast between said front bar and said tongue.` v

The letter A designates the buckle-frame, around whose rear bar, E, the belt or strap, D, is securelyr fastened. B is the tongue of the buckle. It is in this example connected with one of the side bars, F, of the frame in such amanner that it can be turned thereon, and also moved back or forth parallel with the plane lot the buckle-frame'. he tongue B is ot` such a length that its free end rests or laps upon the opposite side oar G, more vor less, when said tongue is at right angles therewith, as is the case when it lies nent to oir parallel with the front bar of the frame, but when it is pushedaway from said front bariits free end, describingn curve about the point where the tongue is connected to the other side bar, F, gradually approaches the inner edge ot sidebar G, and at length passes within it,l so that/it can be swung through the bucklo-frnme Instead of connecting the tongueto the side bar gF in such a way as to allow it to turn thereon, it can be rigidly attached thereto in case the tongue itseli` is made elastic, so as to be capable of being bent backwards and downwards. That portion ot' the side-bar on which the end or point ot the tongue rests, may be widened bymaking a flange on its inner edge, to allow the end or point to rest thereon, the rear end of the flange ceasing at the point where the distance from the centre of motion of the tongue is greater than the length of the tongue, so that when" the tongue is pushed backwards to that point, itis free to pass through the buckle-frame, as above mentioned. `:By means of this construction and arrangement a. belt or strap is easily unfastenethaud alsoeasily fastened again, for the tongue releases its hold of the belt or other article so soon as its point passes through the frame, i and when thearticle .is to be again fastened, it is only necessary to loop the same over the tongue, and push or swin'g its point backthrough the bucklefrau'iel` when the tongue can again be bioug-ht towards the frontbar,

-and hold the article i'ast by pressure against said front bar. The side bar G can be provided with a curved groove on its inner side or edge, to receive the point of the tongue;l butthis is only a modilication of my invention, and does'not require further-description in order to be understood.

The arrangement of a notch or recess in the side bar-G of a buckle-frame, substantially as andt'or the purpose described. v
