ASSIGNOR TO IGNAZ ETRIOH, OF OBER-ALTSTADT, NEAR TRAU- TENAU, BOHEMIA, AUSTRIA-HUN GARY.
RESPIRATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 735,959, dated August 11, 1903.
Application filed July 17, 1902. Serial No. 115,929. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EUGEN FOLKMAR, engineer, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at 4. l/Vielandstrasse, in the city of Oharlottenburg, near Berlin, in the Kingdom of Prussia, German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Respirators, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to respirators in the shape of helmets of the kind where a current of fresh air is made to flow all along the face of the wearer. In my present improvement the helmet itself is not constructed in form of a hollow body serving to guide the fresh outside air; but in my present invention the conduit for the fresh air introduced from the outside consists of a separate hollow body which is not made in one piece with the helmet, the helmet or similar headgear only serving as a means to support the said hollow body. I prefer to use detachable connections between the head-gear and the fresh-outside-air conduit, so as to be able to detach the latter conduit from the head-gear, if required, and to use the said head-gear by itself.
My present invention embraces the further improvement that the nozzle of the fresh-outside-air conduit terminates in a kind of sprinkler, the opening of the nozzle being, preferably, not in a straight plane, but being slightly curved. The nozzle-shaped narrowing down of the mouthpiece makes it possible and is intended to guide the current of fresh outside air more securely, which after it has left the nozzle assumes the form of a broad band of air, which covers the faceof the wearer completely.
A preferred form of construction of my invention is shown on the accompanying drawings. 1
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a frontview. Fig. 2 is a section on the line A B of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side view.
a is the helmet or similar head-gear.
b is a screen attached to the head-gear and projecting over the face of the wearer.
o is the conduit for fresh outside air, to one end, (1, of which is preferably connected a flexible tubing, while the other end, 6, is passed through the screen, so that when the throttle-valve has been opened the fresh air flows in the direction of the arrow (compare Fig. 2) to the delivery-opening e, whence it descends in form of a broad band which onvelops the face entirely.
t represents cords or ribbons by means of which the helmet may be fixed to head of the wearer.
g h represent a press-button locking device in two parts in the manner of the well-known press-buttons used for gloves, the upper button part g of which is rigidly attached to the fresh-air conduit, while the lower socket part 71 is rigidly attached to the head-gear a. By depressing the upper part 9 down into the lower part It the fresh-air conduit 0 is attached to the head-gear a. By pulling the parts 9 and h away from each other the union between the parts a and a is broken. Fig. 3 shows both parts in the detached position; but it is obvious that instead of a detachable connection of the fresh-air conduit with the helmet I may also use a rigid connection between these two parts.
Thehelmet may bein any shape desired. It may under certain conditions consist merely of a skeleton frame which fits to the shape of the head or of the head-gear, respectively, and which serves as a support of the conduit 0 and of the screen I). The screen I) may eventually also be entirely discarded, and in this case it is only the conduit 0 which is supported by the head-gear or the helmetlike frame, respectively.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. In a respirator the combination with a head-cover for the upper part of the head of a separate fresh-air conduit supported by said head-cover, means at the lower edge of said head-cover in connection with said airconduit to break and distribute the current of air, substantially as described.
2. In a respirator in combination, a headcover for the upper part of the head, a decurved and at the lower edge of said head- 10 scending airpassage detachably connected cover and connected to said air-passage. to said head-cover and terminating substan- In witness whereof I have hereunto set my tially below and in the proximity of the lower hand in presence of two witnesses.
