To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that l, WILLIAM F. BOLLY, a resident of Sandusky, in the county of Erie and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Acetylene-Gas Machines; andI do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a new and improved acetylene-gas generator.
The object of my invention is to provide a generator of the character indicated adapted to be placed in the basement of a house and connected directly with the service pipes thereof.
With this end in view my invention consists in providing a combined generator and gas-tank provided with new and improved means for regulating the production of the gas embracing new and improved means for feeding water to the carbid in the generator and new and improved means for withdrawing the water from the carbid when sufficient gas has been generated.
My invention also consists in the features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter set forth in the specification, illustrated in the drawings, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure'I illustrates a central section of my improved generator. Fig. II represents a section on line 1I II, Fig. I.
Referring to the drawings, a, represents the generator of my gas-machine. `This generator comprises a tank a', which is divided by means of an interior wall b into an inner chamber b' and an outer chamber b2, completely surrounding the `inner chamber. The outer chamber is adapted to hold water or other liquid for forming a seal. In the bottom of the inner chamber b is formed an opening or passage-way b3. In theinterior of the chamber b and resting on the bottom thereof is located a perforated receptacle or cage c for holding the carbid.
a2 represents the cover of the tank a, which is provided with a short annular iiange da, adapted to it closly within the rim of the tank a. Inside of the flange a3 a second annular iange o4 is secured and so arranged that when the cover a2 is in place the iange a4 extends into and almost to the bottom of the compartment b2. On the outside rim of the cover are formed a number of ears or pro jections a5, which engage correspondingly-arranged projections a6 on the exterior of the tank, forming means for securing the cover on the tank. In the top of the cover a2 is formed a Valve a7. The cover a2 and the ange a4 together constitute a gas-bell for receiving the gas when first generated.
The reservoir or gas-tank is arranged in proximity to the generator and comprises the telescoping members, constituting the watertank e and the gas-bell f, respectively. In the center of the bottom c of the water-tank is formed a circular opening e2, and tightly tting in the opening e2 and extending upwardly to within a short distance of the top of the tank is a vertical tube or casing g. Located within the chamber g', formed by the tube g, is a plunger h,which is connected with the bellf by a rod h'.
lcv represents apgas-pipe which connects the upper portion of the generator with the upf per portion of the gas-tank.
k' represents a pipe for conducting the ga from the tank to the service-pipes of the house, and k2 represents a waste-pipe to allow the escape of gas from the tank when the gas is being generated too rapidly. This pipe k2 enters the tank near the bottom and then extends vertically within the tank and has its mouth a short distance above the level at which the liquid seal usually stands in the said tank.
Secured to the top of the gas-bell f is a pipe k3, which is closed at its upper end. This pipe 7c3 is arranged to telescope with the pipe k2. Openings lo are preferably formed in the pipe ks near its lower end, sothat the said openings will be normally below the level of the liquid seal.
Between the generator and the gas-tank is located a water-tank Z. The object of this water-tank is to prevent the transmission of heat from the generator to the gas-tank.
-Below the generator and gas-tank is located a water-receptacle or conduit m, one end of said conduit being preferably lower than the other end. This conduit m is in open relation with the chamber b of the generator and the chamber g' of the gas-tank. The con` duit m is provided with a valved outlet m', so situated that the water will flow out at the valve as soon as the water in the conduit rises high enough to enter through the opening b3 in the bottom of the chamber b. An opening is formed in the side of the conduit and provided with a screw-'threaded nozzle m2, so that a hose may be secured thereto. The nozzle is normally closed by means of a plug m3. To the opposite end of the conduit is connected a pump n by suitable length of piping n. This pum-p is designed for cleaning the conduit and is adapted to remove the water and sediment therefrom.

The operation of my gas-machine is as follows: The carbid is placed in the cage c and the cover d2 is locked in, position byinserting the cars a5 into the projections d". able quantity of Water for forming the seals is then poured into the chambers b2 and e. The valve m in the conduit m is then opened, after which water is admitted to the conduit 'm through the pipe o by opening the valve o. When the water in the conduit rises high enough to enter the chamber b' and comes in contact with the carbid, it begins to flow out through the valve m. The valve olis then closed, after which the valve fm' is also closed. .As soon as the water touches the carbid it is drawn up by capillary attraction and gas is generated and passes through the pipe 7c into the tank e. If more gas is generated than passes through the pipe la', the gas within the tank forces up the gas-bell f, which lifts the plunger h in the chamber g. The Water in the conduit m iiows into space left vacant by the plunger and the water recedes entirely from the carbid. If the gas continues to form, owing to the water already absorbed by the carbid, the gas-bell will continue to rise,
A suitlifting the tube 7c3 until the openings 7a4 in the tube come above the level of the Water seal, when the gas will enter the openings and escape through the waste-pipe 7a2. If for any reason it should become necessary to quickly relieve the pressure of gas in the generator, it can be readily accomplished by opening the valve a7 in the top a2.

In an acetylene-gas machine, a carbidchamber, a water-tank, a gas-bell mounted in said Water-tank, a gas-pipe leading from the carbid-chamber to the interior of the gasbell, a casing forming a chamber Within the Water-tank, a plunger located in said chamber and ope'ratively connected to said gasbell, a water-conduit extending from said chamber in said water-tank to the said carbid-chamber, a Water-pipe connection between said water-tank and water-conduit, a valve located in said Water-pipe, and a pump operatively connected with said water conduit, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
2. In an acetylene-gas machine, a carbidchamber, a water-tank, a gas-bell mounted in said water-tank, a gas-pipe leading from the carbid-chamber to the interior of the gasbell, a pipe for conducting the gas away from the gas bell, a casing forming a chamber within the water-tank, a plunger located in said casing and operatively connected with the said gas-bell, a water-conduit extending from the said chamber in said water-tank to the said carbid-chamber, a water-pipe eX- tending from the said Water-tank to the said Water-conduit, and a valve arranged in said waterpipe,substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
