Description
i UNITED STATES Patented August 11,1908.
PATENT OFFICE.
VILLIAM S. SHERWOOD, OF MACON, GEORGIA.
WINDOW-PLATFORM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 735,915, dated August 11, 1903. I
Application filed April 20, 1903. Serial No. 153,510. (No model.) Y
To all whom t may concern/.-
Be it known that LWILLIAM S. SHERWooD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Macon, in the county of Bibb and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful. W`indoW- Platform, of which the followingis a specification.
This invention relates to removable devices employed for supporting articles outside of windows, more particularly bed-clothing, including the mattresses, but which may be employed for supporting various articles; and it has for its object to produce a simply-constructed and easily-applied device which may be readily projected through the Window-v opening and supported from the frame thereof and which may be readily removed When not in use; and the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, as hereinafter shown and described, and speci'ned in the claims. Y Y Y l In the drawings illustrative of the invention, in which corresponding parts are denoted by like designating characters, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device applied. Fig. 2 is a plan view, inverted, of the platform detached and folded or collapsed.
The improved device consists of a platform constructed of a central longitudinal member 10 of any desired length and provided at one end with a hook 11, by which it may be coupled to an eyebolt 12 upon the Window-sill 13. Connected in pairs at suitable intervals to the central member 10 are lateral members 14. 15, the adjacent ends of the lateral members being halved together and overlapping, so that one common pivot-bolt 16 connects both lateral members to the central member. As many pairs of the lateral members may be employed as required, but generally two will be sufficient, as shown.
By halving, the adjacent ends of the lateral members together shoulders 17 are formed, which serve as stops to limit the outward movement of the members, and by forming these shoulders inclined, as shown in Fig. 2, the action is improved and a positive lockjoint formed which limits the movement in one direction, as willV be obvious.
Connecting the lateral members upon opposite sides of the central member are spaced members 18 19, and any required number may be employed and spaced any required distance apart.
The members 18 19 will be united to the members 14 15 by bolts 2O 21 similar to the pivot-bolts 16, so that the spaced members 18 19 and the lateral members 14 l5 .may be collapsed, as shown in Fig. 2, or extended, as in Fig. 1.
Connected to the upper part of the windowframe are guys 22 23, terminating in snaphooks 24 25, and leading from the outer ends of the outermost side members 18 19 are guys 26 27, terminating in rings 28 29, adapted to engage the snap-hooks 24 25, as shown. l
The guys 22 23 will preferably be connected to the lintel 30 or the upper portion of the side members 3l 32 of the frame by eyebolts 33 34, and the guys 26 27 will likewise be connected to the members 18 19 by eyebolts 35 36, as
shown. The guys may be of any suitable maf terial-such as small ropes or cables, chains, or wireY rods of sufficient strength to withstand the strains to which they Will be subj ected. By this means it will be obvious that the platform may be distended and supported from the window in a horizontal position and afford a convenient shelf or temporary balcony-like structure upon which any desired articles lmay be `exposed to the atmosphere for any length of time and the apparatus quickly removed or collapsed for storage when not required. The upper sections 22 23 of the,` stays or guys will remain upon the Window; but all other parts will be removed-With the platform.
The supporting-guys may also be utilized as lines upon which bed or other clothing may be suspended, if required.
One of the outer members 14C or 15 will be provided with an eyebolt 37 to form a support for a stay-wire or cable 38, connected by its -ends Vto 'the eyebolts 35 36 and forming a transverse stay to support the outer end of the platform and materially strengthen and support it.
The stay 38 may be formed integral with the guys 26 27, if preferred.
Connecting the lateral members 14: l5 upon opposite sides of the centralv member 10 are tie-rods 39 40, of any suitable material, to strengthen and stien the structure.
The whole device is very simple in construction, easily applied and operated, and will be found very convenient and useful for the purposes enumerated, especially in localities where it is not convenient to place bedding and other articles requiring the ac tion of sunshine and air in yards or on lawns or other olit-of-door localities.
The parts will generally be of wood, but may be of other material, if preferred.
The platform may be of any desired size and proportions.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is l. In a device ofthe class described, a platform consisting of a central member having oppositely-extending lateral members movably connected thereto, and a plurality of side bars connected movably to said lateral members and foldable therewith, substantially as specified.
2. In a device of the class described, a platform consisting of a central member adapted for detachable connection toawindow, spaced lateral members movably connected to said central member and extending in opposite directions therefrom, a plurality of side bars connected movably to said lateral members and foldable therewith, and connecting means between the free ends of said side bars and the Window for supporting said platform therefrom, substantially as specified.
3. In a device of the class described, a platform consisting of a central member, spaced lateral members disposed in oppositely-eX- tending pairs overlapping at their adjacent ends and each pair movably connected to said central member by a pivot-pin common to both and a plurality of spaced side members movabl y connected to said lateral members and foldable therewith, substantially as specified.
4. In a device of the class described, a platform consisting of a central member, spaced lateral members disposed in oppositely-extending pairs overlapping at their adjacent ends and each pair movably connected to said central member by a pivot-pin common to both and with stop-shoulders adapted to limit the outward movement, and a plurality of spaced side members movably connected to said lateral members and fol'dable therewith, substantially as specified.
5. In a device of the class described, aplatform consisting of a central member having oppositely-extending lateral members movably connected thereto, a plurality of side bars connected movably to said llateral'members and foldable therewith, and stay-rods connecting said lateral members upon opposite sides of said central member, substantially as specified.
6. In adevice of the class described, a platform adapted to be collapsed and distended transversely, means for the detachable connection of said platform to a Window-sill, guys adapted for connection between the outer end of said platform to the upper part of the window, and a HeXible stay connected transversely to the outer end s of the platform members, and extending under the floor thereof.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
WM. S. SHERWOOD.
