SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters-Patent N 0. 735,338, dated August 4, 1903.
Application filed October 24, 1902.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatl, WILFRID BRANFIELD, a
land, residing at 5 Victoria Villa s, city of Sheffield, England, have invented a certain Machines, of which the following is a specification. 5 The invention has for its object to enable a file-cutting machine to out two files at one and the same time by means of one chisel and to enable the ram and the chisel to be automatically adjusted to the surfaces of both files. Amachine so constructed is illustrated in-the annexed sheets of drawings; in which like letters of reference indicate like parts in all the figures. Y

As any means, such as a foot-treadle, may be used to raise the. slideand gravitywould return it, it was not thought necessary to encumber the drawings with it.
Briefly described, the machine consists of a standard A, provided with a traveling bed B, a stationary feed-screw O, and traveling nut D, a vertically-adjustable head II, carrying a swiveling disk I, to which the ram E, chisel- K, and driving-cam G are secured. p I
The files J are held upon the bed of the ma chine by suitable means, one being placed on. each side of the longitudinal center line and both at equal'distances from it.
The head H is carried in slides L and can be raised and lowered when desired by means of a treadle or the like. It is bored out to receive the peripheryof a disk'L-or; more correctly described, a sector of three parts of a circle, and bothlparts are so formed that a number of antifriction balls may be interposed between them, so as to form a ballbearing, as shown in thesection S, Fig. 2,'thus enabling the so called disk I to rotate freely within the head H to some extent in either direction. The axial line of the ram passes through the center of the disk, and the right-hand lower quarter of both the head and the disk are cut away for the convenience of fixing the files and like purposes. An adjustable presser K is also carried by the disk I, the bearing part 70 being brought exactly in line with the horizontal diameterline of the disk, and consequently parallel with the cutting edge of the chisel. The
chisel as it shortens by Wear can be adjusted by lowering the part P. This is accomplished by the nut N upon the screw 0 acting upon the arm Q, projecting from the part P and raising or lowering it in its slides R.
The cam G, by which a reciprocating motion is imparted to the ram and chisel, is driven either by a flexible shaft connected with the source of power or by other means which will allow the disk freedom to automatically adjust itself to the desired position. When the disk has all the diiferent parts fixed in position, it is equally balanced at whatever angle that when the head is lowered by the attendant and the face of the presser rests equally upon both files the chisel will be in proper position to make a cut of equal depth across both files. Should one file be slightly higher than the other, the presser will bear upon the higher side first, and the downward pressure being on one side of the center line will cause the disk or sector-plate to rotate within the head until the presser rests upon both files equally. This movement is instantaneous and brings the chisel into position whether the machine is at rest or in motion.
Having now particularly described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a file-cutting machine, the combination with the ram E, chisel-holder F, presser K, and driving-can1 G, of a sector-plate I, cartion within the head H, as described and shown.
2. In a file-cutting machine, a head which is capable of vertical adjustment, and free to rotate therein to a limited extent and a circular-edged sector-plate carried Within the head as hereinbefore described and shown.
3. In a, file-cutting machine, the combination with a head I-I, moving Vertically in slides L, of a self-adjusting disk or sector-plate I,
carrying the driving-cam G, the 1 am E with its chisel-holder F, and presser K, as hereinbefore described and shown.
