FISHPQLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 734,870, clatedVJly 28, 1903.
l Application filed April 2, 1903. Serial No. 150,841. (No model.)
To a/ZZ when?. it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES HOGLUND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and` useful Improvements in Fishpoles; and I do declare `the following to be a full, clear, and exact de` `scription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Isf
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in fishpoles, and especially in a pole the sections of which are adapted to telescope into small compass, and in theprovision of a reel which isvmounted in the chambered end of the butt of the pole, where it is permanently held and adapted to feed out the y line through a suitable eye in the circumference of the handle, the various parts of the' pole being adapted to be held together when l folded.
VThe invention consists, further, in various details of construction and combinations of parts, .which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically definedin the appended claims. s Y
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which'- Figure l is a central longitudinal section L through the folding pole. Fig. 2 is a cross- `the drawings by letter, A designates the buttend of a pole, having `a partition A' therein forming a compartment B, and C designates l one of the sectionsof the pole, which is hollow and has fitted to its buttwend a ferrule C',
having a slight taper conforming to the taper of the section on which it is tted, and to the forward end Vof said section C are fitted two ferrules-D,Which is fastened to the inner circumference of the section, and D', which is fastened about the outer circumference of the tapering end of said section C-the end of the tapering ferrule D' extending beyond the end p of the inner ferrule.V The tapering end of the butt-section A is provided also with two tapering ferrules E and E,which are fastened by means of rivets or other suitable. n neans and are similarly arranged as are the ferrules D and D'. The diameter of the inner end of the ferrule C is slightly larger than the di-v ameter of the outer ends of the ferrules E and E', so that the outer throw of the sections will be limited by said ferrules E and E when the pole is opened out.
H designates the tip of the pole, which has its butt-end slightly larger than the diameters of the tapering ends of the ferrules D and D to limit the outward throw of the tip, and an eye H is provided on the ferrule K, fitted over the outer end of said tip. A suitable eyeN is also provided, which is fastened to the butt-section, through which the line is adapted to be guided. For holding the telescoping parts in the positions shown in Fig.
Q Q designate two disks having integral N ears Q. thereon bent at right angles to the disks, said disks forming partitions within the ohambered end of the butt of the pole, and said ears Q are apertured and their outer faces slightly con vexed to conform to the concaved inner wall of the chamber of the buttend and are held to the butt-section by means of screws T. Said disks Q are centrally apertured to form a bearing for the spindle O of the reel O', said spindle having a crankM at one end whereby the reel may be rotated, i
and in order to provide a brake for the reel a spring J is provided which is fastened atone end to one of said disks, and its free end is adapted to frictionally engage the wall of an annular groove in the end of the spindle O, as shown clearly in Fig. l of the drawings.
Fitted over the chambered portion of the butt-section is a shell L, having an elongated slot I therein, and fitted in one `end of `said slot is an eye P, havinga flanged portion fitting against the inner circumference of the shell L and having a cylindrical shank portion which is longitudinally slotted, as at Pf. Said shell I is mounted to turn inside of a flanged shell S, which is also longitudinally slotted, and the two slots may be turned into registration with each other and with the elongated slot I when it is desired to remove the shell from the butt-end of the pole, thus.
invention,`it will be understood that I may' make alterations in the details of the same Without departing from the spirit of myinvention.
Having thus fully described my invention, What-I claim as neW,`and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A ishpole having a butt-section which is chambered ont, a ferrnle fitted over said V-chambered portion, a reel journaled within the butt section, longitudinallyslotted flanged eyes fitted to said ferrule, the slots in said eyes adapted to register with the slot in said ferrule, as set forth.
2. A shpole having a butt-section which is chambered, a slotted ferrnle fitted over the same, bracket-arms mounted Within said chambered portion, a reel journaled in said arms, a spring yieldingly held against the spindle of the reel, lon gitudinally-slotted eyes with flanges therein which are adapted to register With the slot in said ferrule, as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto a'fx my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
CHARLES HOGLUND.
