To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS J. MARCH, a resident of Pottstown, in the county of Montgomery and State of Pennsylvania, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Heating Apparatus; and Ido herebydeclare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in heating apparatus, and more particularly to a combined hot-air and hot-water or steam furnace, theobject ot' the invention being to utilize the otherwise waste products of combustion to heat water iua drum inclosed in the hot-air chamber of a furnace.
With this object in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements ofparts, as will be more fully hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.

It will be seen that my improvements do not interfere in the slightest with the heating of air in casing 2 to be supplied through ordinary hot-air pipes to the rooms of the house,
but in addition provide a hotewater heater to heat portions of the house as desired.
The furnace 1 is provided with a fuelfeed chute l5 and an ash-chute 16, which latter also serves as a draft-entrance. In the top of fuel-chute and about midway its ends a plate 16 is secured by a bolt or screw, as shown, and provided at one edge with curved fingers 16 to enter slots in a smoke-curtain 17 and hinge the same thereon. This curtain partially closes the feed-chute to prevent any escape of smoke and gases, but swings freely, so as not to interfere with the feeding of fuel to the furnace.
On the bottom of feed-chute 15 an inverted dished plate 18 is secured and forms an airheating chamber, with which an air-flue 19 communicates and is connected with the draft-entrance 16 to supply fresh air to this chamber. The inner end of this plate 18 is notched or serrated to break up the sheet of air and distribute it throughout the combustion-chamber over the fuel and consume all gas, the air supplied being heated by its contact with the hot plate 18.
Various slight changes and alterations might be made in the general form and arrangement of the several parts described Withoutdeparting from my. invention, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise construction set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such slight changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with a furnace, of a drum arranged in proximity to the fire-cham her and communicating therewith, said drum having an outlet, a water-heater located within said drum, a baffle mounted on said waterheater, and a damper carried by the baffleplate above the water-heater.
2. The combination with the fire-pot and casing ofa hot-air furnace, of a drum built into the furnace structure and located in the hot-air space between the fire-pot and the casing and having means for the entrance and exit of products of combustion, a waterheater complete in itself, located in said drum, and means for directing smoke and gases around and among the pipes of the waterheater.
3. The combination with a furnace having a fuel-chute and an ash-chute or draft-entrance, of a hinged smoke-curtain in thefuelchute, a plate spaced from the bottom of said fuel-chute, and a flue connecting the draftentrance with the fuel-chute below the plate therein.
4. The combination with a furnace having a fuel-chute and an ash-chute or draftentrance, of a smoke-curtain hinged at its upper edge to the top of the fuel-chute, a plate spaced from the bottom of the fuel-chute to form a draft-passage into the combustionchamber on top of the fuel, and a flue connecting the draft-entran ce with said passage.
5. The combination with a furnace having a feed-chute and an ash-chute or draftentrance, of a plate spaced from the bottom of the feed-chute to form a heating-chamber and draft-passage into the combustion-chamber on top of the fuel to consume the gas, and a flue connecting the draft-entrance with said passage.
