WILLIAM DAVIS, OF KENT, OHIO.
COMBINED FILLINQAND BLOW -OFF VALVE FOR BOILERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of LettersPatent No. 734,675, dated July 28, 1903.
Application filed June 20,-1902-i Serial No. 112,461. N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that IyWI IiLIAM H. DAVIS, citizen of the United States, residing at Kent, in the county of Portage and State of Ohio; have invented certain new; and useful Im provementsin a Combined Filling and Blow Off Valve for Boilers; and I do hereby de- ,clare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in valves and may be more specifically designated as a combined filling and blow-oft valve for boilers, the obnecting the waste-pipe.
will be extremelysecure against leakage, simple in its construction, with the parts liable" to wear easily removable without disturbing connections, eitective in operation, andcomparatively inexpensive to manufacture, and
in describing the invention in detail refer ence will be had to the accompanying drawings, forming apart ofthis specification, and wherein like numerals of reference will be employed for designating like parts throughout the viewsof the drawings, in which- Figure 1 isa central vertical sectional view.
showing myinvention as arranged fora blowoif valve and showing the same attached in position on the boiler, the latter being broken away. Fig. 2 is a central vertical sectional view of a part of the valve-casing, showing the hollow plug which is used when the valve is employed as a filling-valve injposition. j
The construction and operation will be apparent to those skilled in the art from the t'ollowing description whenread in connection with the accompanying drawings.
The device consists of a valve-casing 1, which is provided with a hollow threaded nipple 2, adapted to be connected to the boiler 3, as shown in the drawings. Threaded into the nipple 2 is a hollow removable valve-seat seat 5.
her and the port or passage-way 6.
bushing 4, this bushing being provided on its outer end with an annular valve-seat 5. The casing has a port or passage-way 6, establishing communication when the valves are open between the boiler and the inlet-port or the discharge-port, according to whether the device is being used asa filling oras a blow-0E valve. The valve-casing has a threaded extension, through which operates the valve or plug 7, adapted to close against the valve- This valve or plug is threaded into a stuffing-box cap 8 and works within a stuffing-box within the extension of the casing. This stuffing-box as used by me preferably consists of a guide-collar 9, the packing 10, and follower 11, with the cap 8, which, as stated, is threaded onto the extension. A check-nut 12 is threaded onto the extension of the valve-casing to be engaged by the stuffing-box cap. The valve-casing is also provided with an interiorly-threaded extension having a chamber therein, with a threaded opening in the casing between the cham- In this threaded opening is arranged a valve-seat bushing 14, having the annular valve-seat 15 on its outer end. This valve-seat bushing 14 and the valve-seat bushing at are each provided with notches 16, so that a spanner or like device may be employed for removing the bushing or for placing the same in position. Threaded into the extension is a cap 17, through which is threaded the stem of a valve 18, having an annular shoulder, so that itcannotbe removed without first removing the cap 17, and adapted to close against seat 15.
In Fig. 1 I show thedevice as used for a blow-off valve, being open to the discharge 19, as indicated by the arrow.
Both valves are to be closed when not operating as a blow-off norto fill the boiler, thus providing double security against leakage. In use a waste-pipe (not shown) is attached to the discharge 19.
In order to use as a fi1ling-valve without disconnecting the waste-pipe, I remove the cap 17, removing therewith the valve 18, and insert into its place the hollow plug 20, (shown in Fig. 2,) the top or inner end of this hollow plug being provided with a seat 21, adapted to fit against the valve-seat 15, so as to make a tight connection and establish communication between the interior of plug 20 and the passage-way 6. In use this'plug 20 is attached to a hose by any suitable means, such as a union or swivel coupling, and the hose connected to a pump or to a hydrant. After the boiler is filled the plug or valve 7 is closed, the hollow plug 20 removed, and cap 17 again placed in position, so that when desired the valve may again be used as a blow-oft.
The outer ends of the valves 7 and 18 are squared or otherwise suitably shaped in order to adapt them to be operated by a handwrench.
Under the present practice when it is desired to fill a boiler which is not under pressure it requires the disconnecting of the injector from the tank (taking down the tankhose) and connecting with a hydrant or pump. The water is then forced through the injector into the boiler. This and the replacing of the tank-hose requires considerable time and labor, which is all avoided with the use of my combined blow-oft and filling valve, as described.
While I have shown and described a practical embodiment of my invention, yet I do not wish to unduly limit myself to this exact construction, as various changes may be made in the details which will fall clearly within the scope of my invention.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A valve-casing adapted to be attached to a boiler and connected witha waste-pipe and having an opening, a passage-way and two ports for communication with the boiler and the waste pipe respectively, a valve mechanism for closing the passage-way near the boiler, and a removable cap for closing said opening, in combination with a second valve mechanism for closing said passageway, comprising a valve-seat bushingsecured to and wholly within said casing and removable therefrom through said opening, and a valve adapted to close against said bushing and having a stem screw-threaded through said cap.
2. A valve-casing adapted to be attached to a boiler and connected with a Waste-pipe and having two openings, a passage-way and two ports for communication with the boiler and the waste-pipe respectively, and removable. caps for closing said openings, in combination with two valve mechanisms for closing said passage-way each comprising, a valveseat bushing secured to and wholly within said casing and removable therefrom through one of said openings, and a valve adapted to close against said bushing and having a stem screw-threaded through one of said caps, and a stufling-box for one of the said valve-stems.
3. A valve-casing adapted to be attached to a boiler and having an opening, a valveseat, a passage-way, a discharge-port and a port for communication with the boiler, and a valve mechanism for closing said passage- Way near the boiler, in combination with a hollow plug adapted to be inserted in said opening, to close against said valve-seat and to be secured to said casing with its interior communicating with said passage-way.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM H. DAVIS.
