' PATENT Patented July 28, 1903.
()FFICE.
JOHN HENRY DOYLE, OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
MEANS FOR FLUSHIANG DRAIN-PIPES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 734,520, dated July 28, 1903 Application filii a 28,
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, J OHN HENRY DoYL'E, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Flushing Drain-Pipes, of which the following is a specification. v
This invention relates to means for flushing drain-pipes, and has for its object to provide an improved device of the class described which will possess points of advantage in conv venien'ce, simplicity, inexpensiveness, effectiveness, and general efficiency.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the class described which will be permanently connected with the house structure and ready at .all times for operation.
Another object of the inventionis to provide a device of the class described which will open vertically into the opening from the basin into the drain-pipe and the flow of water from which will draw the air or water contained in the basin into the drain-pipe, causing a suction into such drain-pipe.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of a basin and drain-pipe embodying my improvements partly in section and partly in elevation. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail view of theopening from the basin into the drainpipe and the adjoining parts. Corresponding parts in both the figures are denoted by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a basin of the ordinary form usually found in the kitchen of a private house.
2 designates the opening from the basin 1 into the drain-pipe 3, which communicates with a sewer (not shown) and is provided with a trap 4 to prevent the escape of sewer and other gases from the sewer into the house.
My invention consists of means connecting the source of the water-supply (not shown) and the drain-pipe 3 for the purpose of con-- veying the flow. of water directly into and through the'drain-pipe 3 to flush and clean thedrain-pipe 3 and is an improvementupon .the device described in the application for patent filed by me May 28, 1902, Serial No. 109,307.
In the preferred form the device which is 1902. SerialNo-109,308. (No model.)
the subject of this application comprises a connection extending from the water-supply pipe to and into the opening2 from the basin 1 into the drain-pipe Preferably the upper part of the drain-pipe 3 has an enlargement at the inner side above the trap 4, which enlargement opens into the basin 1 at one side of the opening 2. A pipe 5 is connected at the upper end with the water-supply pipe 6 and is preferably set into the side of the basin 1, to the contour of which it conforms, and opens at its lower end 5 vertically into the enlargement of the drain-pipe 3 atthe side of the opening 2. The pipe 5 is provided with a valve 5 for controlling the flow of water through the pipe 5, and a stopper 7 of suitable material, preferably rubber, is provided for closing the opening 2. Above the basin the usual faucets 8 are provided. It is evident that when the valve 5 is operated to permit the flow of water through the pipe 5 into the drain-pipe 3 there will be a certain amount of suction through the opening 2 if the stopper 7 is removed, which will cause a suction of the Water into and through the drain-pipe 3 similar tothat of a siphon.
The operation and advantages of my inven tion will be readily appreciated and understood. Owing to its permanent connection with the basin 1, the flushing meanswill always be available, and by reason of its entering the drain-pipe immediately adjacent to the opening 2 from the basin 1 into the drain-pipe 3 the flowof water through such flushing means will cause a suction effect in the nature of a siphon action from the inte- .rior of the basin into and through the drainpipe 3. Moreover, the flushing means or pipe 5 being set into the side of the basin and connected with the water-supply pipe 6 immediately above the upper edge of the basin 1 will be out of the way, and therefore not cause any disfigurement of the structure.
I donot desire to be understood as limiting myself to the details of construction and arrangement as herein described "and illustrated, as it is manifest that variations and modifications may be made in thefeatures of construction and arrangement in the adaptation of the device to various conditions of use without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention and improvements.
I therefore reserve the right to all such variation and modification as properly fall within the scope of my invention and the terms of the following claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent As a means permanently connected to a basin for flushing the drain-pipe, the combination of the following instrumentalities, viz: a pipe connection with the water-supply pipe lying close to the edge of the basin and having a valve, and a flushing-pipe leading from said connection to and into the dischargeopening and waste-pipe, and following the internal contour of the basin, and a waste-pipe having an enlargement at its point of connection with the basin to accommodate both the end of said flushing-pipe and the usual stopper, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name in the presence of the subscribing witnesses.
JOHN HENRY DOYLE.
