To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, MARTHA BEW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in

the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improve- Y ments in Garment-Supporters, of which the following is a specification.

This invention provides a fastener of novel construction susceptible of 'a variety of uses, chiefly for supporting garments such as hosiery, drawers, and the likethe device comprising, essentially, two parts, a clip and a slide, the latter having a gripping portion to positively take hold of the part to be supported, the gripping portion being thrown into and out of operative position by a sliding movement thereof with reference to the clip.

For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for elfecting'the result reference is to be had to the following description and drawings hereto attached.

While the essential and characteristic features of the invention are susceptible of modification, still the preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which-'- Figure 1 is a perspective View showing the supporterapplied to the lower portion-of a corset or kindred article of wearing-apparel. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section thereof. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the clip- Fig. 4. is a perspective view of the slide, having its attaching end straight and provided with a single slot. Fig. 5 is a view of the supporter shown in Fig. 2, having the slide moved so as to withdraw the gripping end to admit of the clip being readily applied to or removed from an article. Fig. 6 is a front view of the supporter, a part of. the clip being broken away and showing the edge of the gripping end smooth. Fig. 7 is a view, similar to Fig. 2, of a modification, showing the device adapted for supporting a nether garment. Fig. Sis a front view of the supporter illustrated in Fig. 7. Fig. 9 is a detail perspective view of the form of slide shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 5. Fig. 10 is a detached view of the slide shown in Figs. 7 and 8.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.

The supporter comprises, essentially, two members or parts 1 and 2, the part 1 being the clip and the part 2 the slide. The clip is formed of a sheet metal blank of proper shape doubled upon itself to form the membets 3 and 4, between which a space is left to receive the article, goods, or garment to which the device is to be applied. The members 3 and 4 are capable of springing together and being separated at their free ends to accommodate the thickness to which the clip may be fitted. The member 3 is ofiset near its free end, as shown at 5, and the ofiset porthe space formed between the members 3 and 4. of the clip unobstructed, so that the clip may be easily slipped on and ofi of any article or garment. The member 4 is straight and flat and is preferably tapered throughout its length. An opening Sis formed in the inner end of the member 3 adjacent to the fold of the blank and receives the slide 2.

The slide 2 is formed of a sheet-metal blank having an end portion folded to provide the gripping end 9, whichis spaced from the body of the slide at its free end and is possessed of sufficient resiliency to enable it to spring when in service. The edge of the gripping end 9 may be either toothed, as shown most clearly in Fig. 4:, or smooth, as shown in Fig. 6. The slide is mounted in the openings 6 and 8 of the clip, and the gripping end faces inward or toward the member 4, so asto make positive engagement. with the garment or material inserted into the space of the clip. The attaching end of the slide may be variously formed, according to the particular use of the article. As shown in Figs. 1, 2, 5, and 6, the attaching end of the slide is folded and provided with parallel slots to receive the tape, web, or elastic 10, adapted to be connected with hosiery in the accustomed way.

As shown in Fig. 4, the attaching end of the slide is straight and provided with a single slot, thereby enabling the article to be used for connecting a Suspender-end to the pants. In the construction shown in Figs. 7 and 8 the slide is doubled upon itself, so as to engage over the Waistband 11 of a pair of pants, the clip portion being attached to the waistband of the nether garment 12, thereby enabling the device to be used in the capacity of a drawers-supporter.

The article may be dilferently constructed, variously shaped, and provided in difierent forms and sizes according to the specific use for which it is designed; but in every instance the clip and slide must embody the essential features herein set forth. When the slide 2 is moved inward, the gripping end 9 passes in front of the shield 01' guard 7 and is withdrawn from the space formed between the members 3 and 4. Hence the clip may be readily applied to or removed from any article or material. After the clip has been applied to the article to which it is to be attached the slide 2 is drawn outward, thereby causing the gripping end to positively engage with the material to which the clip is fitted and securing the same against casual displacement. The harder the pull upon the slide the tighter will be the grip of its end 9 upon the material received in the space of the clip, as will be readily comprehended. When it is required to remove the supporter from the part to which it is applied,it is only necessary to move the slide 2 inward,whereby the gripping end is withdrawn from the goods and caused to lie in front of the shield or guard 7.

Having thus described the invention,what is claimed as new is 1. A garment-supporter comprising a clip, a slide mounted with reference to the clip for reciprocal movement and provided with a gripping end which is adapted to be projected into or withdrawn from operative position by moving said slide in or out, substantially as set forth.

2. In a garment-supporter, a clip comprising spring members, and a slide mounted upon a member of the clip and having a U spring-gripping end adapted to be projected into the space of the clip or withdrawn from said space by moving the slide out or in, substantially as described.

3. In a garment-supporter, a clip having a shield or guard at the extremity of one of its members, and a slide having a gripping end adapted to lie in front of the said shield when the slide is moved in and to be projected into the space of the clip when the slide is moved out, substantially as specified.

4. In a garment-supporter, a clip having a portion near the extremity of one of its members ofiset and provided with an opening, and a slide mounted in said openingand having a gripping end which is adapted to lie in front of the terminal portion beyond the offset and the opening therein when the slide is moved inward, substantially as described.

5. A garment-supporter comprising a clip having openings in the end portions of one of its members, a slide mounted in said openings and having a gripping end adapted to be projected into the space of the clip or to be withdrawn from said space according as the slide is moved out or in, substantially as set forth.
