Be it known that I, HENRY FRANCIS KINsER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chattanooga, in the county of Hamilton and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and useful Computing-Scale, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in computing-scales.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of computing-scales and to provide an exceedingly simple and inexpensive one adapted to be readily adjusted to correspond with the price per pound of the commodity to be weighed and capable of indicating the value of the goods weighed without requiring any mental calculation on the part of the operator.
A further object of the invention is to provide a computing-scale of this character having a series of beams adapted to be employed for performing mathematical calculations independently of the operation of weighing.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a computing-scale constructed in aocordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side elevation, partly broken away, illustrating a modification of the invention. Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view of the same on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of a scale, showing another form of the invention. Fig. 6 is a vertical sectional view on the line 6 6 of Fig. 5. Fig. 7 isa detail view illustrating the construction of the movable price-block shown in Figs. 1, 3, and 5.

1 designates a frame arranged in an upright position and designed to be connected in any suitable manner with a base (not shown) of a platform-scale, and the said frameis provided with upright arms 2 and 3, located at the ends of the frame and forming guides for an upper beam. The frame is also provided with intermediate upwardly-extending arms 2 and 3a for supporting a horizontal bar 4L, and it has an intermediate standard or support 5, preferably composed of two sides, as illustrated in-Fig. 2 of the drawings. The standardorsupport is provided at its top with arms or extensions 6, which are provided with suitable bearings for knife-edged pivots 7 of the upper or tare beam 8, fulcrumed between its ends and extending through openings or slots 9 and 10 of the arms 2 and 3, whereby the upper or tare beam is limited and guided in its movement. The tare-beam, Which is provided with sliding poises 1l and 11, has slightly-curved ends and is provided thereat with knife-edged pivots 12 and 12 for the reception of pendants 13 and 13a, adapted to receive weights, as clearly shown in Fig. 1, for a purpose hereinafter described. The tare-beam is connected in rear of the knife-edged pivots 7 by a rod'14 with platform-levers, (not sl1own,) and the said rod 14 has its upper portion 15 forked or bifurcated to straddle the bar 4 and a calculator-beam 16, which is suspended from the tare-beam S by links or plates 17 and which is adapted to resist any downward movement of the inner or rear arm of the same, as hereinafter explained. The links or plates are provided at their ends with bearing-openings for the reception of upper and lower knife-edged pivots 1S and 19, the knife-edged pivots 18 at the Vupper ends of the links being also employed for connecting the rod llt with the tare-beam. The knife-edged pivots 19 of the `calculator or computing beam are arranged at a point between the ends thereof, and the lower edge of its front arm is provided with notches 23, which are adapted to receive amovable fulcru m 24 of a price-block 25. The price-block 25, which indicates the price per pound, is slidably mounted on the horizontal bar 4 of the frame and is adapted to be moved longitudinally thereof, and as the price of the commodity increases it is moved `away from the support 5, and as the price decreases it is moved inward toward the position illustrated in Fig. Y1. By this arrangement the resistance oered by the computing or calculator beam to the downward movement of the rear arm of the upper or tare beam and to the consequent poising of the scale is gradually decreased as the price-block, which indicates the price per pound, is moved outward on the graduated bar 4 away from the support. The bar 4may be provided at its upper and lower edges with graduations, as indicated in the accompanying drawings, for increasing the range of the scale, and it may also be provided with a series of intermediate graduations, as shown. These graduations may represent units of different characters. One of the series of graduations may be provided for indicating the price per bushel of sixty pounds or the like, and another set of graduations may indicate the amount of interest per day at siX per cent. or any other desired rate; but the upper or main series of graduations are designed to indicate the price per pound. This arrangement may, however, be varied, if desired. The front arm of the calculator or computing beam is provided with a sliding poise 26 and is designed to be provided with upper, lower, and intermediate graduaticnscorrespondingwith those of the horizontal bar, and the rear arm of the calculator or computing beam is provided with a heavy sliding poise 26a and has graduations corresponding with those of the said horizontal bar. The calculator or computing beam is provided at its front end with an adjustable weight. The upper or tare beam is provided at its front arm with graduations, and it has a series of removable counterbalancing-weights 2S at its front'pendant 13 for counterbalancing the weight of vessels or receptacles placed on the scales for holding the goods to be weighed. The rear arm of the upper or tare beam is provided with graduations corresponding with the interest-graduations of the calculator-beam and the horizontal bar, and the pendant 12a is provided with removable weights 28a for increasing the range of the machine in computing interest. The calculator-beam is adapted for simple weighing operaticns when the price-block is at the inward limit of its movement. When it is desired to ascertain how much of a commodity may be obtained for a given amount, the price-block is arranged at the price per pound of the com modity and the sliding poises of the calculator or computing beam are arranged to indicate the amount of the purchase, and then a sufiicient quantity of the commodity is placed upon the scale to bring the of the tare-beam and the weights of the pendant 13a, and the scale is then brought to a poising point by adjusting the movable weights or poises of the calculator-beam, which will indicate the amount of interest. It will be apparent that the graduations may be arranged for indicating various other results.
In order to enable the sliding price-block to be moved freely on the stationary guidebar, the fulcrum 24 is vertically movable and is adapted to be raised and lowered to carry it into and out of engagement with the notches of a calculator-beam. The fulcrum 24 is provided with an enlarged shank 4S, arranged within a vertical opening 49 of the priceblock and adapted to be engaged by a cam or eccentric 50. The cam or eccentric 50 is formed by recessing or cutting away a pivot or shaft l, which extends through the price' block at opposite sides of the said opening 49 and which is adapted to be rotated to carry the cam into and out of engagement with the lower end of the shank of the fulcrum 24. The pivot or spindle is provided at its outer end with a knob or thumb-piece 52 and is adapted to be rotated to operate the cam or eccentric 50 for raising and lowering the fulcrum By this construction the fulcrum is adapted to be readily lowered to carry it out of engagement with the notches of the calculatonbeam to permit it to be adjusted along the stationary graduated bar, and after the price-block has been adjusted and arranged at the proper point the fulcrum may be quickly raised to its engaging position.
In 3 of the drawings is illustrated a modification of the invention wherein the central support is omitted and the tare-beam 29 is located at the bottom of the frame and is fulcrumed between its ends by a suitable knife-edged pivot 30. The rear end of the tare-beam 29 is connected by a suitable knifeedged pivot 3l with the sides of the forked or bifurcated upper portion of the rod 14, which extends to the platform-levers. The calculator-beam is suspended by suitable links or plates 3l from the sides of the forked or bifurcated portion of the rod 14a. The links or plates 31aM are connected at their upper ends to the sides of the said forked portion of the rod 14a, and the lower ends of the links or plates 31a are similarly connected with the calculator-beam. The front end of the beam 29 is provided with an adjustable weight 32, and the operation of the calculator or computing beam and the price-block is similar to that heretofore described.
In Figs. 5 and 6 of the drawings is illustrated another form of the invention, in which a calculator-beam, a fixed horizontal bar, and a sliding price-block similar to those hereto fore described are employed. The tare-beam 33 is arranged at the top of the scale and is fnlcrumed, by means of a knife-edged pivot 34, on a support 35, constructed similar to that illustrated in Fig. l of the drawings.

The inner or rear end of the tare-beam is connected with a rod 36, which is designed to eX- tend to the platform-levers, (not shown,) and the said inner or rear end of the tare-beam is also connected by plates or links 37 with the calculator-beam, as described in connection with the form of scale shown in Figs. l and 2. This form of scale differs from that shown in Fig. l in that a heavy sliding value-poise is omitted, and the calculator-beam is provided at its front end with a pendant 38, baving a series of weights for indicating the value. The calculator-beam 39, which is connected with the upper or tare beam by links or plates 40, is provided at its lower edge with a series of notches 41 to receive a fulcrnm 42 of a sliding price-block 43, which is mounted on a horizontal bar 44. The calculator-beam in this form of scale is designed to be of an increased length, and in order to facilitate the arrangement of the sliding poise an intermediate beam 45 is employed. The intermediate beam 45, which receives the sliding poise 4G, is balanced when the latter is at the inner end of the grad nations or at zero-point, and the outer end of the intermediate beam 45 is connected with the outer end of the calculator-beam by a link or links 47. The value-graduations are marked off on the intermediate beam, and the scale operates substantially the same as those heretofore described in ascertaining the price of a cornmodity or the quantity of the same to be given for a certain sum.
Changes in the form, proportion, size, and the minor details of construction within the scope of the appended claims may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacricing any of the advantages of this invention, such as connecting the rod 14 with any suitable means for receiving the goods to be weighed.

In a computing-scale, the combination of a frame having a iixed graduated pricebar, a sliding price-block arranged on the graduated bar and having a non-tiltable fulcrum, a computing-beam having a sliding poise and located directly above and fnlcrurned on the price-block, a tare-beam having a movable poise and designed to be connected with the goods to be weighed, and means for connecting the tare-beam with the calculator-beam, substantially as described.

In a computing-scale, the combination of a frame having a fixed graduated bar and provided with a support, a tare-beam fulcrumed between its ends on the support and having a poise, a rod connected with the tarebeam and designed to be connected with the goods to be weighed, a calculator-beam located between the tare-beam and Jthe graduated bar and having a poise, links connecting the calculator-beam and the tare-beam, and a price-block arranged on the graduated bar and provided with a non-tiltable fulcrum located directly beneath and arranged to re- .ceive t-he calculator-beam, substantially as described.
7.
