GAS MIXER AND INJECTOR.-

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEWIS .PATRIO, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the countyof Clarkand State of Ohio, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in- Gas Mixers and Injectors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in hydrocarbon-injectors, and it belongs to that class in which the gas is discharged in the form of an annularjet.
The object of my invention is to convey both the gas and the air direct to the point of ignition without any interposed means for mixing the two fluids prior to their illumination, and in carrying out my design I dispense with the ordinary mixer;
My improved device is intended to give a sufficient field of adjustment to allow the annular jet of flame from the burner to be reduced in thickness almost to transparency or to be increased in thickness and density, as may be required. To accomplish this, I make use of a valve and valve-chamber of taper form, the contiguous surfaces of the valve and valve-chamber being of the same inclination and parallel with each other at all points of the adjustment of the valve.
My improved injector consists of a rightangled pipe-elbow, similar in its outer form to those used in gas-pipe connections, the horizontal limb of which has a taper bore and contains the valve, which is also of taper form. The vertical limb forms the inlet-pipe for the gas, leading to the limb containing the valve.
The construction and operation of my improved hydrocarbon-inj'ector are fully set .forth in the specification, shown in the drawings, and are morefully pointed out in the claims hereto annexed.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of-my improved modified form. Fig. 6, Sheet 2, is a vertical longitudinal section through the axial line of the injector'shown in Fig. 1.
In the drawings, A is a right-angled pipeelbow,consisting of the horizontal limb a and the vertical limb a, and as shown in the view, Fig. 1, it represents the device in its operative position. At the rear part the elbow A is reinforced with a'greater thickness of metal at 0, extending from its angle downward, as seen in Figs. 1, 2, and 6, the, object of which will be hereinafter explained. .The horizontal limb a has its bore tapered in form from the front end 6 gradually back to its connection with the vertical limb a, as shown in the sectional views, Figs. 2 and 6, to form the bore B, within which is the valve B. The periphery ofv this valve is of precisely the same angle of inclination as the wall of the bore B in order that the contiguous surfaces of the valve and wall of the bore B shall be parallel at all points within the latter in the adjustment of the valve B. Valve B has a long stem 0, which consists of a tube having the bore D, passing through it and also through the valve B from end to end. A modification of the hole D is shown in Figs. 2 and 3, but it has no significance in the operation of the valve B and is not claimed. Valve-stem C has a screw-thread O on its exterior end, which latter passes through a holet' (seen in Fig. 2) in the rear of the pipe-elbow A in the axial line of the valve-chamber B and engages the screw-threaded head b of the long curved arm I), which springs from the top of limb a of the injector and extends some distance to the rear of the latter for the purpose of supporting the exterior part of the valve-stem C.
By reference to Figs 1 and 2 it will be seen that more than one-half of the valve-stem 0 extends outside of the pipe-elbow A and that it necessarily requires a strong support of its outer end to not only preserve it inthe axial line of the limb a, but also to prevent its vibration when in operation. The arm I) is made integral with the limba to give strength to this part of the injector. Around the hole 11, at the rear of the pipe-elbow A,in the reinforce 0, is an excavation,which is filled with a semi-elastic packing e around the valvestem 0, forming a stuffing-box g, 'which has A spiral spring d encircles a cap (1 on it.
the valve-stem 0 between the head I) of the arm b and the cap d on the stuffing-box g, and the end pressure of this spring upon the cap 01 serves to prevent any escape of gas from the inlet-pipe a, leading to the bore B. The screw-thread O on the valve-stem G extends from the hand-wheel it forward to a point a little distance in front of the head 1)- of the curved arm I), the remaining part of the valve-stem having a smooth exterior surface.
By reference to Fi 3 it will be observed that the circular orifice it between the Valve B and the wall of the bore 13 is of uniform width throughout its circumference. This uniformity is preserved without reference to the movement or location of the valve 13 when operating the injector, as the surface of the wall of the taper bore B and the peripheral surface of the taper valve B are parallel throughout all the movements or location of the valve B in the bore B of limb a.
In the operation of my improved hydrocarbon-injector the gas is' turned into the inletpipe A by any ordinary stop-cock or other means, and it passes between the valve B and the wall of the bore B through the annular orifice h (seen in Fig. 3) to the front end of the injector, where it is lighted, and at the same instant the air rushes through the hole in the valve-stem C to the same point within the annular jet of gas, and the two currents of gas and air reaching the burner at the same instant through the injector are flashed into a flame instantaneously.
I claim as my invention 1. In a hydrocarbon-injector, an inlet-pipe for the admission of the gas, in combination with a discharge-pipe having its interior wall tapering in form, from its discharge end to its junction with said inlet-pipe, a valve of like taper form with that of the interior wall of said discharge-pipe operating within said interior wall, said valve having a partiallyscrew-threaded stem, and provided with a hole extending through said valve-stem and valve, to allow the air-current passing therethrough to reach the point of ignition simultaneously with that of the gas, substantially as set forth, for the purpose described.
2. In a hydrocarbon-injector, the combination with the inlet-pipe and the dischargepipe of a tapering wall in the latter, a taper valve having its exterior surface of like inclination with the inner wall of said dischargepipe, said valve having a long, and partiallyscrew-threaded stem provided with a hole in its axial line continuous through said valve and valve-stem, and an arm extending from said discharge-pipe, and supporting the exterior part of said valve-stem, substantially as described.
3. In a hydrocarbon-injector, the combination with an inlet-pipe and an outlet-pipe for the admission and discharge of the gas, of a taper wall within said outlet-pipe, a taper valve operating therein having a tubular valve-stem screw-threaded upon its exterior part, and supported in the axial line of said outlet-pipe by an arm extending from the lat ter, the hole in said valve-stem and valve being continuous throughout, allows the aircurrent to reach the point of ignition at the same instant with that of the gas, thereby causing the complete mixing of the air and gas at the point required for its illumination.
4. In a hydrocarbon-injector, the combination with an inlet-pipe, and a discharge-pipe, of a wall of taper form within said dischargepipe, a valve of like taper form operating therein, said valve having a hollow screwthreaded stem, a hand-wheel on the free end of the latter for operating said valve, and an arm extending from said discharge-pipe and supporting said valve-stem, and engaging therewith in operating said valve, substantially as shown and described.
