RIBBON-GUIDE HOLDER FOR TYPE-WRITERS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 733,975, dated July 21, 1903.

Be it known that -I, EDWARD F. KUNATH, a citizen of the United States, residing in Jersey City, Hudson county, State of New J ersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ribbon-Guide Holders for Typ'e-WVriters, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to type-writing machines, and particularly to the ribbon-guide, which is employed adjacent to the printingpoint.

The object of my invention is to provide a holder for such a ribbon-guide which will securely hold said guide under normal conditions, yet may be shifted to allow of a ready removal of the ribbon-guide.

The invention will be fully described hereinafterand the features of novelty pointed out in the appended claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a sectional elevation on line 1 l of Fig. 2 of a portion of a type-writer provided with myimproved ribbon-guide holder. Fig. 2 is a plan with the ribbon-guide in section; and Figs. 3 and 4 are a plan and a front elevation, respectively, of the ribbon-guide holder.

A indicates the so-called segment, which is that part of the type-writer to which the type-bars are pivoted. Adjacent to the rear portion of the segment, at the top thereof, is a stationary member B, and in this member is formed a vertical guideway B for the ribbon-guide 0, provided at its lower end with means, such as an eye 0, for connecting it with any approved mechanism by which said guide is given a reciprocating up-and-down motion. The segment A and guide member B practically form part of the type-writer frame and will be referred to under the term of a support. segment is secured the forked type-bar guide D, the upper end of which lies adjacent to to the printing-point. way. In order, however, to prevent any looseness of the guide 0, I provide the ribbonguide holder E. This holder is secured to the top of the member 13 of the support, as by screws F, passing through slots E, which extend from front torear. The holder is guided in its forward or rearward movement by being engaged with the type-bar guide D. (See Fig. 2.) For this purpose the holder has a cut-out portion E adapted to embrace the type-bar guide. At the center the holder has a notch E into which the ribbon-guide O fits when the holder is in its forward position, as shown. The holder then embraces the ribbon-guide and forms a guide therefor. When it is desired to remove the ribbon-guide, the screws F are loosened and the holder is moved to the rear, so as to release the ribbon-guide and allow. it to be removed by an upward pull. Of course the ribbon-guide is first disconnected from the mechanism which operates it. Thus the ribbon-guide is normally positively held and guided; but when the holder is moved to the rear the ribbon-guide may be readily removed.

Various modifications may be made without departing from the nature of my invention.

The holder E also prevents dirt from working into the guideway B, and this is a very important advantage.

Iclaim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. In a type-Writer, asupport provided with a vertical guideway, a type-bar guide carried by said support, a ribbon-guide movable vertically in said guideway,a ribbon-guide holder movable on said support from front to rear and recessed to embrace the type-bar guide and the ribbonguide, and means for nor mally keeping said ribbon guide holder against the ribbon-guide.

2. In a type-writer,a movable ribbon-guide, a support having a guideway for said'ribbonguide, a ribbon-guide holder movable on the support toward and from the ribbon guide, and means for normally keeping said holder against the ribbon-guide.

3. In a type-writer,a movable ribbon-guide,

a support having a gnideway for said ribbonguide, a ribbon-guide holder constructed to embrace the ribbon-guide and movable toward and from the ribbon-guide, and means for normally keeping said holder against the ribbon-guide.
