PROCESS OF MAKING PRINTERS METAL FURNITURE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 733,895, dated July 14, 1903.

1'0 all whom, it nuty concern:
Beit known that I, ISAAC BAAS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have 5 invented certain new and useful Improvements in Processes of Making Printers Metal Furniture, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
to The main objects of myinvention are in the manufacture of printers metal furniture to avoid dressing or finishing the furniture for the purpose of removing the bur left by breaking oi the jets and of forming feet for the furniture to stand squarely upon, to form drain-holes through the bodies of the furniture by simply driving or breaking the jets therefrom, to more advantageously distribute the metal for resisting strain, and to reduce the cost of manufacture.
It consists in the process of making metal furniture of this class, as hereinafter particularly described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings like letters designate the same parts in the several figures.
Figures 1 to 4, inclusive, show a piece of metal furniture made in accordance with my invention, Fig: 1 being a vertical running- 0 wise section, Fig. 2 a bodywise elevation including the jet, Fig. 3 a runningwise section without the jet, and Fig. 4 a plan view with the jet.
A designates the body of a piece of metal 5 furniture constructed in accordance with my invention. It is formed in the ends with tapering cavities B and C, which increase in size toward the ends of the body, thus leaving the walls of the body thickest about mid- 0 way between its ends. In this way the metal is best disposed to resist compression and prevent crushing of the furniture.
Primarily the furniture is cast with a jet D, which is connected with the interior walls of the body between its cavities B and C by a thin fragile partition, as shown in Figs. 1,
2, and 3. After the furniture has been removed from the mold in which it is cast the jet D is broken off or driven out, thereby removing the thin partition by which it is connected with the body and forming an opening between the cavities B and C, through which the liquid used to wash the forms in which such furniture is employed may drain 0%. 5 5
From the foregoing description, in connection with the drawings, it will be apparent that by my improved construction and method of casting the metal is distributed to better advantage, time, labor, and expense required to remove the rough bur left by the jets and to form feet on furniture cast in the ordinary way are saved, and by simply breaking off or driving out the jets drain holes or openings are incidentally formed through the bodies.
I claim- 1. The process of making printers metal furniture which consists in casting the furniture primarily with a jet joined to the body by a fragile partition between cavities in the ends of the body and then forming a drainhole between said cavities by breaking out the jet with said partition, substantially as described.
2. The process of making printers metal furniture which consists in casting the furniture primarily with a jet joined to the body by a thin transverse partition between inwardly-converging cavities in the ends of the body and then breaking out said partition with the jet, leavinga contracted drain-opening, substantially as described.
