Be it known that I, LINDSAY MURDOOH, a citizen of the United States, residing at 811 Sixth street, northwest, Washington, District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carrying Attachments for Bicycles, of which the following is a specification.

My invention is an improved carrying attachment for bicycles for carrying an umbrella, luggage, and baby-seat, or any of said devices; 'and the invention consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.

In carrying out my invention I provide means for supporting several devices from the frame of a bicycle. This includes a main support held to the bicycle-frame. In Fig. 2 I show such support cast integrally with the frame of a bicycle and provided with the post b, having in its upper side a socket c toreceive the stafi of the umbrella. This may be desirable in the manufacture of new machines; but in order to permit the convenient application of my invention to machines already in use I may prefer the construction shown in Fig. 2 in which the main support a is in the form of a clasp adapted to fit over and around the front portion of the frame of a bicycle and be secured by bolting at g, as

The main bracket is shown in Fig. 4 and is provided at its rear end with a boxing k, having an opening 1 to fiton the post of the main support and is provided at its front end with a head A, having the opposite upright grooves t and flanges it to fit corresponding portions in the box-like receptacle, as will be presently described. This main bracket has the upwardly-inclined rear arm and the horizontal front arm extending from the forward end of the inclined arm to the head A, bracing-ribs q being provided at the juncture of the front and rear arms with the bracket and extending from the upper to the lower edges of the bracket, at the middle thereof, as shown in Fig. 4, the lower inclined edge of the rear arm of the bracket extending at o to the lower end of the rib r, as shown in Fig. 4.. The rib r serves as a stop to prevent any backward movement of the platform B when the latter isfitted by means of its carrier b on the front arm of the bracket, as shown in Fig. 1. The bracketcarrier has the depending lugs a, which straddle the arm of the bracket, fitting over the same, as shown in Fig. 1, and being held from rearward movement by the ribs 1' and against forward movement by engagement with the head A at the front end of the bracket. The bed or rack B rests on the carrier c1, and may support the chair D, as shown in Fig. 1. In thus supporting the chair its supporting-springs D may fit in the sockets .b of the rack or base 13, as will be understood from Figs. 1 and 5 of the drawings.

By the described construction the bed or rack may be readily applied to or removed from the bracket Whenever desired, and the chair can be conveniently connected with the rack or base and removed at pleasure.

The base or rack B is provided at its front end near its opposite sides with openings 0, which receive pins 6' on the rear side of the box or receptacle in order to steady the rack and receptacle in place by interlocking the receptacle and the rack, as will be understood from Figs. 1, 5, and 6 of the drawings. The box -like receptacle F is provided with openingsf for straps to secure any articles within the box or receptacle and is provided with the opening cl in its rear side for the admission of the front flanges of the head A to permit said head to interlock with the rear side of the receptacle F in order to properly carry the latter at the front end of the bracket. By the described construction it will be noticed the inclination of the main bracket is such as to support the receptacle F and the platform above the front wheel of the bicycle and out of the way and that the receptacle may be used in connection with the chair and the umbrella, and the umbrella will be so supported as to shield the occupant of the chair as well as the rider of the bicycle, the several parts being conveniently removable and the attachment being so constructed as to permit its convenient application to and removal from a bicycle whenever desired.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A carrying attachment for bicycles comprising the main support having an upright post and a socket for an umbrella-staff, the main bracket provided at its rear end with a socket to fit on the upright post of the main support, and at its front end with ahead for interlocking with the box-like receptacle and from the frame of the machine, a box-like receptacle at the front end of said bracket, and a platform supported by the bracket in rear of the box-like receptacle and adapted for use substantially as set forth.

3. A carrying attachment for bicycles comprising a main bracket, a box-like receptacle carried by the main bracket, and a platform also carried by the bracket, substantially as set forth.

The combination in a carrying attachment for bicycles, of a main support, a bracket carried by said main support, and detachably connected therewith at its rear end, a box-like receptacle detachably connected with the front end of the bracket, and the platform detachably connected with the bracket in rear of I the box-like receptacle, substantially as set forth.

5. The combination in a carrying attachment for bicycles, of the main bracket, the platform and a carrier therefor, having depending lugs straddling the main bracket, substantially as set forth.

6. Acarryingattachment for bicycles, comprising a main support provided with means for supporting an umbrella, a main bracket connected with said main support, and carrying devices supported on the main bracket, substantially as set forth.

7. A carrying attachment for bicycles comprising a main support provided with means for holding an umbrella, a main bracket detachably connected with said main support, and carrying devices detachably connected with the main bracket substantially as set forth.

8. The combination in a carrying attachment for bicycles, of the main bracket provided at its front end with the head having the opposite upright grooves, and the boxlike receptacle interlocking with said head for supporting the receptacle at the front end of the bracket, substantially as set forth.

9. A carrying attachment for bicycles comprising a main bracket, a box-like receptacle detachably connected with the front end of the main bracket, the platform and thecarrier therefor, having depending lugs arranged to straddle the main bracket, in rear of the connection of the box-like receptacle therewith, substantially as set forth.

10. A carrying attachment for bicycles comprising a main bracket having an upwardlyinclined arm, and a horizontal arm projecting from the front end of the upwardly-inclined arm, and a platform supported on the horizontal arm of the bracket,-substantially as set forth.

11. A carrying attachment forbicycles comprising a main support having an upright pro vided in its upper end with a socket for the umbrella-handle, a bracket having a socket fitting over said upright, and carrying devices on the bracket,substantially as set forth.
