SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters patent No. 733,328, dated Ju1y 14, 1903.

To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, OSCAR FALKENWALDE, residing in Baltimore city, State of Maryland,
have invented a new and Improved Graseous-v Fuel Burner, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to` improve-V ments in that type of gaseous-fuel or hydrocarbon burners for use in the tire-boxes of lordinary cooking stoves or ranges for hot air or water furnaces, and it more particularly seeks to provide an improved type of burner of the character stated embodying the generic features of the burner disclosed in my Patent No. 715,467; and it primarily has for its object to provide certain improvements on the burner disclosed in my patent aforesaid whereby a more practically operating burner is provided which can be fired by use of crude or refined volatile oils, whereby the same is especially well adapted for heating steam-boilers of marine engines and for other analogous uses. Y
My present invention in its generic nature comprehends a casing or body apert'uredl transversely and having a longitudinal conical bore tapering from its entrant to its discharge end, air-inlets in the casing opening into the top and the bottom of the said bore, a generatorpipe mounted within the heat zone of the burner, and a valved ejector connected to the said pipe and held to discharge into the entrant end of the conical bore in the burner-body.
My present invention in its more complete formcomprises a bodyhaving a longitudinallyextended conical bore, transverse apertures bisecting said bore, air-inlets in the said body communicating with the bore, a generatorpipe held in the hot zone of the generator, and an ejector-valve positioned with respect to the entrant end of the conical bore to discharge the vaporous sprays at an angle to the longitudinal axis of the .saidconical bore, whereby to eject the vapor against -the wall of the bore in a manner to cause the same to pass through the said bore in a staggered direction to reduce danger of carbonizing and producinga more complete combustion of the volatile substance.

l ent invention embodies certain improvements in the needle or ejector valve, the base-casting or body-support, as also other details of construction, all of which will hereinafter be fully explained, and specifically pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, 4in Which- Figurel l'is a perspective view of my im- -proved gaseous-fuel burner. In my present construction the body or casing 1 of the burner has an external shape substantially that shown in my patent before referred to, and the same is detachably supported on thel base-casting 2, the peculiar construction of which forms a special feature of my present invention and will be presently described.
The longitudinal bore or flue 10 in my present construction of burner extends from the rear end to a point in line with the base c of the tapering head or end 1c ofthe body, and the'saidbore is made conical and tapers from the entrant to the exit end, as clearly shownv in Fig. 2. i v
The object in making the bore 10 coneshaped is to provide an increased draft in the direction of the discharge end, create a greater increased suction of air into the retortthrough the air-inlets 3 3a, disposed relatively in the bottom and the top of the body 1, whereby to produce, as it were, a Bunsen-burner action for the mixture of the air and gas within the retort.v

To the rear end of the pipe-section G is detachably secured au elbow gx, to the pendent IOO end of which is detachably connected the ejector or needle valve 5, the peculiar construction of which and its relation with the conical bore l is best shown in Fig. 2, by reference to which it will be seen the same comprises a casing consisting of a vertical portion 5 and the horizontal portion 5", which is inclined at an acute angle with respect to the longitudinal axis of the said bore 10,where by to eject the volatile spray into the bore against the upper wall thereof, as indicated by the dotted-line portion a3, such arrangement of parts being provided to prevent the direct flow or passage of the said volatile spray through the bore and cause the said fuel-spray to be deected in a staggered direction against the upper and lower walls of the bore in the manner indicated by the dotted lines as' m2 m3. By thus passing the volatile fluid into the bore or retort 10 the same is suiciently retarded in its passage therethrough to provide for a complete combustion thereof of the gaseous vapor with the air drawn in through the upper and lower air-inlets.
By checking the direct flow of the gaseous vapors, as stated, I find from practical experience that danger of carbonizing Within the retort is materially reduced thereby and a perfect combustion is effected, and in consequence thereof a greatly-increased heat production from a given quantity of fuel is obtained over what is possible in the arrangement of the fuel-ejector and retort shown in my patent aforesaid.
The valve-casing in my present construction has the usual screw-tap to receive the collar G, and the needle 7 is also of the usual type, except its shank 7 is provided with an annular shoulder 7l to prevent the possibility of accidentally turning the valve back to such a dist-ance as to entirely disengage its threads 7c from the internal threads 5C in the casing, and thereby overcome the danger of pulling the valve out of it-s casing during the operation of adjusting the valve for controlling the discharge.
Another and important advantage in ejecting the gaseous fuel into the retort or bore 10 in a staggered manner, as described, is that it admits of using either crude or refined oil in my present construction of burner. When arranged for using crude oil, the jet or escape passage of the valve is made somewhat smaller than is necessary in the use of refined oil, and to provide for a sufficient admixture of air the top of the feed has a greater number of air-inlets than is required when refined oil is used.
I have provided for an economical manufacture of the generator devices and for readily cleaning the same.
By referring now to Fig. 2 it will be noticed the pipe G joins with a T-coupling 8, provided with a detachable screw-plug 8 in the top and with a screw-tap at the bottom to receive the short pipesection 9,Witl`1 which connects a second section 12, to which the fuel-feed pipe P joins, and the said section 12 also has a screw-tap 12a in the bottom.
The pipe Gr and the members 9, 12, and 18 are filled with a duid-absorbing fireproof material in acomminuted form, as indicated by 9X, 12x, and GX, which is packed sufciently loose so as not to prevent the iiow of the fluid, but sufficiently tight to screen the fluid and effect a thorough distribution of the minute particles thereof.
lThe bottom casing in my present construction (best illustrated in Fig.` 4) consists of a body'having a series of vertically-projected angle-lugs 2fL 2, which form foot-rests to support the burner-body 1 sufficiently above the casting 2 to provide for a free circulation of air thereunder, which enters through the longitudinal openings 2c 2C in the body 2, oppositely disposed one at each side of a longitudinal channel or trough 2d, which joins a collecting-pocket 2e at one end of the body 2 and a pocket 2f at the opposite end of said body 2, which extends under the ej ector-valve and is intended to collect the drippings therefrom.
By constructing the burner base or body 2 in the manner stated the asbestos lining necessary in the form of base shown in my other patent is not required, for the reason that the drippings in the pocket 2f will fiow into the central trough 2d, be conveyed under the hot burner-body 1, and consumed.
The bottom casting 2 in my present invention is also wider than the burner-body 1, whereby to provide lateral extensions 2,, and these extensions have longitudinal channels 2z, that dip or slant from the pocket .2f to pocket 2e, (see dotted lines, Fig. 2,) and the said channels 2Z are so disposed under the outer ends of the cross-finest as to catch any drippings from the said fines, whereby to convey the same from the pocket 2e, from whence they pass to the central trough or channel 2d and are consumed, thus preventing the waste of any of the fuel.
In the complete form my improved burner also includes a Water-drip means for producing water-dust in the retort to assist in reducing carbonization in the retort 10 and for minimizing the disagreeable blowing noise incident in the use of this type of burner. The said Water feed or drip means comprises a tank supported at any desired point, which has a pendent or gravity discharging-pipe 15, provided with a valve a, terminating in a nozzle 15", that extends into the entrant end of the bore 10 into the plane of the discharge from the ejector or fuel-feed valve to drop the water into the vaporous discharges, in which the water diuses, and to materially aid in separating the carbon and nitrogen and creating a more perfect decomposition of the IOO the handle, as shown at Figs. 9 and l0, and which is constructed witha hook f at its outer end, which descends into a notch gin the back Z and thence into the corresponding notch in the saw X, as shown more particulariy at Figs. 9 and 10, so that by reason of that part of the back Z which is nearest to the saw-handle being constructed with a slit therein corresponding in thickness'with the thickness of the saw X the back Z becomes firmly Xed to the saw X, both at its front and rearward ends, while the back Z operates in the broad openings h h, respectively,
in the upper part of the two vertical slides vshown at Figs.- 9, 11, aud 12, which'slides are marked t' fi in not only Figs. 9, 11, and 12, but in Figs. 3 and 6 of my improved miter-box also, thereby enabling an ordinary crosscut-saw to be operated after the manner of a tenon-saw in miter-boxes, also admitting of the readyremoval of the back or frame Z when it is required to use the saw X for its ordinary purposes.y The rear end of the back or frame Z is further held securely in place by entering notches lc, one on each side of the blade X, in the handle Z, as shown at Fig. 9.
laving now described the nature of my present improvements and the best system,
mode, or manner with which I am at present acquainted for carrying the same into practical effect, I desire to observe in conclusion that what I consider to be noveland original, and therefore claim as the invention to be secured to me by Letters Patent, is as follows: v
1. Ina ruiter-box having a circular table and leaves or backs movable angularly upon or about a vertical axis which is the center of the circular table, the central pivot pro-l jecting downward from the under part of'the circular table, upon which pivot the two rings each having an arm to which each leaf or back is connected are carried, and all operating in the manner and for the purposes substantially as set forth.
2. In a miter-box having a circular table, the circular-stand connection whereby thejcircular stand is attached to the same downwardly-projecting central pivot upon which the rings and arms which carry the leaves or backs are pivoted, by means of which connec-A tion the ringsand the circular stand are all carried by and revolve in common upon this one and the same central pivot, so that the rings and the circular stand are all held by this connection in permanent operative attachment to the central pivot of the miterboX, substantially as hereinbefore set forth.
3. The supplementary stop with incline face toward the leaves or backs of the miter box, for giving support to the rear face of half-moldings being cut in myimproved circular miter-box,said supplementary stop comprising a metal strip' bent to forman upward arm to engage the work, an outward arm and a Hat or horizontal foot, substantially as hereinbefore described, having a slot inits hori zout-al flat foot, which passes under the shoulder of the screw or nut which on being tight# ened fastens the supplementary stop yin the required position, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination of the crosscut-saw, the removable back or frame applied to the crosscut-saw, and the saw having a'notch in the front end thereof, the back or frame having a slit in the outer end with transverse pin for engaging with notch in the front end of the saw, the handle end of the frameV or backV having the slit in the under side for engaging with the handle end of the saw-blade, the handle having the notches in either side whereinto the rear ends of the back or fralne enter, when the back or frame and saw are placed together, and the back and saw-blade both having notches whereinto the catch of the spring attached-to the handle of the sawblade enters for holding the parts together; also the spring attached to the handle of the saw, the whole operating together in the manner and for the purposes substantially as hereinbefore described.
