Be it known that l, THUEMAN ADDISON DINSMORE, of Cameron, in the county of Marshall and State ofWestVirginia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Permutation-Padlocks, of which the following is a specification. o i

My invention relates to `improvements in locks, beingparticularly applicable` to padlocks, its object beingto provide a lock which can be opened without a key.

My invention consists in certain novel features ofconstruction, arrangement, and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed outin the claims, reference being hadv to the accompanying drawings, in whichr Figure lis a side view of my improved lock. In the present embodiment of my invention as herein shown applied to a padlock the casing is composed of the frontand rear faces A and A', secured to each other by the boltsct, openings ot' being leftnear each upper corner to receive the front and rear ends of the hasp` B. Said hasp is pivoted within the casing at its rear end, and saidrvear endis provided with a heel or extensionB. J ust above and to the rear of the pivot the hasp is hollowed out, as'at b', said hollowed-out portion being adapted to rest upon the top edge of the side of the casing when the lock is open. The front endof the hasp is provided'witha hook` B2, which is adapted to be caught and held by the spring-latch C, pivoted at its lower end within the casing and having the springe pressing against it to normally throw it for- Y wardly on its pivot. A finger-piece C projects from the latch through aslot a? in the front face of the lock-case. The front face of the lock is also provided with the central circular aperture u2, within which isiitted the dial D. Said dial is somewhat larger than the central aperture d2, but is provided with a hub extension d, which lits snugly within the aforesaid central aperture, but not so tightly as to bind. Said dial is provided with a central bore, wit-hin which fits the axle of Serial No. 156,765.' (No model.)

Extending rearwardly from the hub extension d is a reduced collar d', the periphery of which is polygonal to tit into the central aperture in the front tumbler of the lock. The axle E of the rear tumbler F is circular in cross-section for a greater portionvof its length', butis squared at its outer end, upon which squared portion is itted and held by'a screw the pointer H. The rear end of axle is reduced and journaled in the rear face of the lock-case. -At a short distance from its 'rear end axle E is squared, as at e, and immediately in front of this squared portion is a circular flange e', which separates the two tumblers F and G,the tumbler G being iitted on the collar d', and thetumbler F being provided with a central aperture,which correspends .in shape to thevsquared portion e of the axle and on wh-ich it fits.

The ytumbler F is provided with a radial slotf, the corners of which'are rounded, as shown, the corner f being rounded more than the opposite corner. The tumbler G is provided with a similar radial slot g, the corner g of which is rounded more than the opposite corner. The respective parts are placed in the proper positions, as shown in Fig. l, the pointer H being held onl by a Vscrew h. The thickness of the heel or extension B is at least equal to the distance fromthe front face of tumbler G to the rear face of tumbler F, so that it will be necessary to bring the radial slots in both tumblers into registry with each other before the heel B can be swung inwardly to allow the hasp to be unlocked. l

The dial D is provided with a circular scale of numbers or other characters, and the tumbler G is fitted on the collar d', so that the slot g bears the desired relation to the zero-point of the scale, and the tumbler F is fitted on the pointer-axle E in its desired re lation to the pointof H and the parts of the case secured together. At the upper central portion of the vfront face of the casing is an indicating-line I. Now to open the lock, the parts being about as shown in Fig. l, it being noticed that the tumblers can be rotated Without striking the heel of the hasp, the zero-point on the dial D is brought into alinement with the indicating-line .I and then turned to the right the required number of IOO spaces, (the number being known only to the operator.) This movement brings the radial slot g adjacent to the heel of the hasp. The pointer H is now fixed at the indicating-line I and then turned to the left a number of spaces, (known only to the operator,) whereupon the latch C is pushed to the side, re leasing the hooked front end of the hasp. The hasp can now be opened, as the heel or rear end extension will swing into the registering radial slotsfand g. The hasp when thrown as far back as it will go rotates the tumblers together forwardly a slight distance. Now when the front or hooked end of the hasp is swung downwardly again the tumblers are carried backwardly until the heel b leaves the radial slots and permits the tumblers to be rotated freely and destroy the registry of the radial slots.

Any desired combination may be set, and it can be changed as frequently as desired by changing the tumblers on their axes with re lation to the scale on the dial and the point of the pointer.

It willbe seen that I provide asimple, cheap, and efficient padlock which can be opened without the use of a key, thus doing away with the annoyance of having to provide several persons with a key and the consequent liability of loss of the keys. It will also be noticed that the hasp cannot be opened until the hooked end thereof is released by moving the spring-latch C to one side after the slots in the tumblers have been brought into registrv.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. In a permutation-lock, the combination with a casing, a plurality of rotating tumblers mounted therein and provided with radial slots in their periphery, a hasp pivoted near one end within said casing having a rear extension or heel, and provided with a hookshaped front end, a manually-operated latch mounted in said casing and adapted to en gage and lock the hook-shaped front end of the hasp and means for rotating the tumblers relatively, whereby the radial slots will be brought into registry to permit the rear eX- tension or heel of the hasp to be swung into said registering slots subsequent to the releasing of the hooked front end of the hasp by the spring-latch.

2. In a permutation-padlock, the combination with a casing a dial rotatably fitted in the front face thereof and having a rear extension, a tumbler mounted on said extension and provided with a radial slot in its periphery, a pointer-shaft extending through said dial and journaled at its rear end in the casing having a portion of its periphery polygonal, a tumbler having a central aperture mounted on said polygonal portion and provided with a radial slot in its periphery, a hasp pivoted near one end within the casing, a rear extension or heel projecting from the pivoted end thereof and havinga hook-shaped front end, a manually-retracted spring-latch mounted within the casing and adapted to engage and lock the front end of the hasp, the tumblers being relatively rotated to bring the radial slots into registry with each other adjacent to the rear extension or heel of the hasp whereby said heel may be swung into said registering slots subsequent to the release of the hook-shaped front end ofthe hasp and permit opening the hasp.
