PATENT OFFICE.
FRANKLIN G. TALLERDAY, OF IVATERLOO, IOWA, ASSIGNOR TO TALLER- DAY STEEL PIPE 8: TANK COMPANY, OF WATERLOO, IOWA.
KNOCKDOWN WAGON-BODY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of LettersPatent No. 733,347, dated July 7, 1903. Application filed February 24, 1903. Serial No- 14.41783. (No model.)
To a, whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANKLIN G. TALLER- DAY, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of WVaterloo, Blackhawk county, Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knockdown \Vagon- Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in knockdown wagon-boxes; and the object of my improvement is to so construct the wagonboX of separable metallic plates that they may be easily put together or knocked down after use to save space in shipment.
Another object is to provide a convenient means for locking together the sides and upright plates.
These objects I attain by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents one of my improved wagon-boxes set up ready for use. Fig. 2 represents the method of setting up the side plates on the wagon-bed, and Fig. dis a detail view showing the locking device for side and bottom plates.
The construction shown is that adopted for use in transportation of grain or other freight of a similar character. I do not limit my self to the exact form of wagon-box shown, as that may be varied to suit convenience. Inasmuch as such a wagon-box is of a very bulky nature, it is desirable to so construct it that it may be easily knocked down for transportation. The braces and locking devices should be so devised as to afford the greatest stiffness and strength with the least amount of weight. The bed-plate sis provided with upturned flanges along its edges, the latter resting within the angle bars 1". The side plates at and b and the end plates 0 and 70 have narrow bands 75 along their outer surfaces close to and parallel to their lower edges. Side plates at andb are placed in position by having their lower edges slid along the bed-plate s, with the lower edge of the bandst coincident with the upper edges of the flanges on said plate 5. In this position the side plates, bands 2', and angle-bars 1*, previously bolted together at w, as shown, form a firm and reliable lock-joint for the side and a spring-clip 6, provided with a hookf. The
angle-bar r is discontinued along the lower part of the opening referred to above, and the plate having a flange extending downward is placed thereunder, as shown at g. The clip 6 is fastened near its top to the door d, so that its lower portion may be sprung away from said door. WVhen pushed down, the hookfslips over and engages the flange on the plate g, securely holding said door in place.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a knockdown wagon-box, a separable lock-joint consisting of an angle-bar, a bar placed longitudinally on a plate, another plate with a flange adapted to be embraced between said angle-bar, the first-mentioned plate and the longitudinal bar thereon, and suitable means for fasteningtogether said angle-bar, the first-mentioned plate and its longitudinal bar, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a knockdown wagon-box, an adjustable and separable lock-joint, consisting of the combination with a bottom plate having an upturned flange, of an angle-bar in en gagement with the outer angle of said flange, and a side plate slidable within the inner angle of said flange, said side plate also provided with suitable means of connection to said angle-bar in order that the-said flange may be firmly clamped between them, substantially as shown an described.
Signed at Waterloo, Iowa, this 31st day of January, 1903.
FRANKLIN G. TALLERDAY.
