CREAM-REGULATING DEVICE FOR SEPARATORS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 733,273, dated July 7, 1903.

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM 7. PRICE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Poughkeepsie, county of Dutchess, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cream-Regulating Devices for Separators, of which the following is a full,
clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which to form a part of this specification.
The object of my invention is to regulate and vary during the revolution of the bowl the density of the cream discharge. I accomplish this object by the mechanism herein-' after described.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my separator with a'portion of the cover broken away, showing the ring in section and the adjusting-screw. Fig. 2 is an enlarged section on line 2 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3' is an enlarged inside view of the ring and wings. Fig. at is a section on line 4 4, Fig. 3. Figs. 5 and 6 are perspective views of the wings. Fig. 7 is an enlarged section of rollers and end of adjusting-rod.

Surrounding the neck of the bowl so as to make a sliding fit is the ring F, having the flange f. This ring F is placed upon the neck of the bowl in such position that the fiangef is above the top of the neck of the bowl. In the side of the ring F is the elongated orifice or slot f. Projecting outward through this orifice is the tube f having secured to it at a point on the inner side of the ring a wing G, having angular faces g g. The wall of the inner end of the tube f is cut away, forming orifice the inner end of which is flared outwardly by inclined ends 9 Surrounding this tube f within the ring is a tube f having raised above its outer end a wing G, corresponding to, but projecting in opposite directions from, the wing G. The inner end of the tube f is cut away to correspond with the inner end of tube f forming an orifice g with inclined ends 9 In one position, as hereinafter described, the orifices g" and g Serial N0.l52,503- (No model.) 1
and the inclined ends g and g coincide. The tubes f and f are slidably fitted one upon the other. As may be seen, by sliding one tube upon the other through the medium of the wings the orifices g and g may be brought from a position of coincidence to positions where the orifice in the tube f is more or less cut off. The wings G and G are in alinement with and on the same level with each other, and thus the limit of motion is obtained by the inner ends striking in the movement in either direction. This is so adjusted that it occurs before there has been suficient movement to cause the inclined ends g to pass beyond the inclined ends 9 and thus entirely inclose the orifices g and g. The orificed ends g and g of the tubes f and f i are inserted within the bowl through the creamoutlet E in the bowl. As may be seen, by moving the wings G G, so as to more or lessclose the orifices g and 9 the density of the cream delivered from the bowl will be varied. I accomplish this movement of the wings while the bowl is rotating in the following manner: The outer end of the tube f 2 extends outwardly through the orifice or slot f, as hereinbefore described. The inner surface of the ring is cut away at H H to form seats for the wings G G, re- 86 spectively, the cut-away portions being bound by upper and lower concentric curved portions h and h, the width of the cut-away portions being equal to the width of the wings G G. The tubes and wings are placed in position so that the orificed portions g and g are on the lower surfaces of the tubes. As may be seen, the vertical positions of the tubes f and f are fixed. It may also be seen that by moving the ring upwardly the ori- 9o fices g and g are enlarged. By moving the ring downwardly the orifices g and g are contracted. I move this ring up and down,when the bowl is rotated by the following mechanism: 5

Above and below this nut i" and surrounding the rod are the bearings J, secured to the feed-cup D, Any other non-rotatable portion of the machine will answer as well as the feed-cup D to which to secure the bearings D. Near the upper end of the rod I is the projecting rod K. The position of the parts as shown is such that by moving the rod K the rollers i and i will be brought respectively above and below the flangef. 'When in this position, by turning the nut 2 in one direction the rod I is elevated, and through the medium of the roller '5 the ring F is elevated and the density of the cream decreased, and when the nut is turned in the other direction through the medium of roller 7; the ring F is depressed and the density of the cream increased. As the ring F is rotating with the bowl and thus rapidly, the action of rollers 11 or i is practically upon the whole circumference of the flangef of ring F.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is-.
1. In a centrifugal cream separator, in combination, with the bowl, provided with a cream-outlet orifice, of tubes, slidably fitted one upon the other,projecting within the bowl through said cream-outlet orifice, each of said tubes having an elongated cut-away portion at its inner end, said tubes being adapted to revolve upon each other to bring said cutaway portions in variable coincidence with each other.
2. In a centrifugal cream -separator, in combination, with the bowl, provided with a cream-outlet orifice, of tubes, slidably fitted one upon the other, projecting within the bowl through said cream-outlet orifice, each of said tubes having an elongated cut-away portion at its inner end, said tubes being adapted to revolve upon each other to bring said cutaway portions in variable coincidence with each other, and a stop for limiting the movement of said tubes upon each other.
3. In a centrifugal cream -separator, in combination, with the bowl, provided with a cream-outlet orifice, of tubes slidably fitted one upon the other projecting within the'bowl through said cream-outlet orifice, each of said tubes having an elongated cut-away portion at its inner end, said tubes being adapted to revolve upon each other to bring said cutaway portions in variable coincidence with each other, theinner end of said cut-away portions being correspondingly flared.
4. In a centrifugal cream separator, in combination, with-the bowl, provided with a cream-outlet orifice, of tubes, slidably fitted one upon the other, projecting within the bowl through said cream-outlet orifice, each of said tubes having an elongated cut-away portion at its inner end, said tubes being adapted to revolve upon each other to bring said cutaway portions in variable coincidence with each other, the inner end of said cut-away portions being correspondingly fiared, and a stop for limiting the movement of said tubes upon each other.
5. In a centrifugal cream separator, in combination, with the bowl, provided with a cream-outlet orifice, of tubes, slidably fitted one upon the other, projecting within the bowl through said cream-outlet orifice, each of said tubes having an elongated cut-away portion at its inner end, said tubes being adapted to revolve upon each other to bring said cutaway portions in variable coincidence with each other, and means adapted, during the revolution of said bowl, to revolve said tubes upon each other.
6. In a centrifugal cream separator, in combination, with the bowl, provided with a cream-outlet orifice, of tubes, slidably fitted one upon the other, projecting within the bowl through said cream-outlet orifice, each of said tubes having an elongated cut-away portion at its inner end, said tubes being adapted to revolve upon each other to bring said cutaway portions in variable coincidence with each other, and a stop for limiting the movement of said tubes upon each other,and means adapted, during the revolution of said bowl, to revolve said tubes upon each other.
7. In a centrifugal cream separator, in combination, with the bowl, provided with a cream-outlet orifice, of tubes, slidably fitted one upon the other, projecting within the bowl through said cream-outlet orifice, each of said tubes having an elongated cut-away portion at its inner end, said tubes being adapted to revolve upon each other to bring said cutaway portions in variable coincidence with each other, the inner end ofsaid cut-away portions being correspondingly fiared, and means adapted, during the revolution of said bowl, to revolve said tubes upon each other.
8. In a centrifugal cream separator, in combination, with the bowl, provided with a cream-outlet orifice, of tubes, slidably fitted one upon the other, projecting within the bowl through said cream-outlet orifice,each of said tubes having an elongated cut-away portion at its inner end, said tubes being adapted to revolve upon each other to bring said cutaway portions in variable coincidence with each other,the inner end of said cut-away portions being correspondingly flared, and a stop for limiting the movement of said tubes upon each other, and means adapted, during the revolution of said bowl, to revolve said tubes upon each other.
10. In a centrifugal cream-separator, in combination, with the bowl provided with a cream-outlet orifice and a device in said outlet adapted in its movement to vary the density of the cream-discharge, of a ring slidably fitted upon the neck of the bowl, connection between said ring and said creamdensity device adapted in the vertical movement of the ring to operate said cream-density device, said ring having a flange, a rod, projections from said rod adapted to rest respectively above and below said flange, said rod being supported so as not to rotate and means to elevate and depress said rod.
11. In a centrifugal cream-separator, in combination, with the bowl, provided with a cream-outlet orifice and a device in said outlet adapted in its movement, to vary the density of the cream discharged, of a ring slidably fitted upon the neck of the bowl, connection between said ring and said creamdensity device adapted in the vertical movement of the ring to operate said cream-density device, said ring having a flange, a rod, projections from said rod adapted to rest respectively above and below said flange, said rod having a threaded portion, a nut upon said threaded portion and fixed bearings above and below said nut.
12. In a centrifugal cream-separator, in combination, with the bowl provided with a cream-outlet orifice and a device insaid outlet adapted in its movement to vary the density of the cream discharged, of a ring slidably fitted upon the neck of the bowl, connection between said ring and said creamdensity device adapted in the vertical movement of the ring to operate said cream-density device, said ring having a flange, a rod, projections from said rod adapted to rest respectively above and below said flange, a rod projecting from the upper end of said firstmentioned rod whereby said first-mentioned rod may be turned so that the projections may be brought into and out of alinement with said ring-flange, said first-mentioned rod being supported so as not to rotate and means to elevate and depress said rod.
13. In a centrifugal cream-separator, in combination, with the bowl provided with a cream-outlet orifice anda device in said outlet adapted in its movement to vary the density of the cream discharged, of a ring slidably fitted upon the neck of the bowl, connection between said ring and said creamdensity device adapted in the vertical movement of the ring to operate said cream-density device, said ring having a flange, a rod, projections from said rod adapted to rest respectively above and below said flange, a rod projecting from the upper end of said firstmentioned rod whereby said first-mentioned rod may be turned so that the projections may be brought into and out of alinement with said ring-flange, said first-mentioned rod having a threaded portion, a nut upon said threaded portion and fixed bearings above and below said nut.
14. In a centrifugal cream -separator, in combination, with the bowl provided with a cream-outlet orifice, of tubes slidably fitted one upon the other projecting within the bowl through said cream-outlet orifice, each of said tubes having an elongated cut-away portion at its inner end, said tubes being adapted to revolve upon each other to bring said cutaway portions in variable coincidence with each other, inclined projecting wings upon each of said tubes, a ring slidably fitted upon the neck of the bowl, there being cut-away portions upon the inner surface of said ring, of width substantially equal to that of the greatest width of wings, in which said wings rest, there being an elongated slot through said ring and a device supported so as not to rotate with the bowl adapted to elevate and depress said ring.
15. In a centrifugal cream-separator, in combination, with the bowl provided with a cream-outlet orifice, of tubes slidably fitted one upon the other projecting within the bowl through said cream-outlet orifice, each of said tubes having an elongated cut-away portion at its inner end, said tubes being adapted to revolve upon each other to bring said cutaway portions in variable coincidence with each other, inclined projecting wings upon each of said tubes, a ring slidably fitted upon the neck of the bowl, there being cut-away portions upon the inner surface of said ring, of width substantially equal to that of the greatest width of wings, in which said wings rest, there being an elongated slot through said ring, said ring having a flange, a rod, projections from said rod adapted to rest respectively above and below said flange, said rod being supported so as not to rotate with the bowl and means to elevate and depress said rod.

In a centrifugal cream-separator, in combination, with the bowl provided with a cream-outlet orifice, of tubes, slidably fitted one upon the other, projecting within the bowl through said cream-outlet orifice, each of said tubes having an elongated cut-away portion at its inner end, said tubes being adapted to revolve upon each other to bring said cutaway portions in variable coincidence with each other, inclined or angular projecting wings upon each of said tubes, a ring slidably fitted upon the neck of the bowl, there being cut-away portions upon the inner surface of said ring, of width substantially equal to that of the greatest width of wings, in which said wings rest, there being an elongated slot through said ring, said ring having a flange, a rod, projections from said rod adapted to rest respectively above and below said flange, said rod having a threaded portion, a nut upon said threaded portion and fixed bearings above and below said nut.
17. In a centrifugal cream-separator, in

combination with the bowl provided with a cream-outlet orifice, of tubes slidably fitted one upon the other projecting within the bowl through said cream-outlet orifice, each of said tubes having elongated cut-away portions at its inner end, said tubes being adapted to revolve upon each other to bring said cutaway portions in variable coincidence with each other, inclined or angular projecting wings upon each of said tubes, a ring slidably fitted upon the neck of the bowl, there being cut-away portions upon the inner surout of alinement with said ring-flange, said first-mentioned rod being supported so as not to rotate with the bowl and means to elevate and depress said rod.
18. In a centrifugal cream separator, in combination with the bowl provided with a cream-outlet orifice, of tubes slidably fitted one upon the other projecting within the bowl through said cream-outlet orifice, each of said tubes having elongated cut-away portions at its inner end, said tubes being adapted to revolve upon each other to bring said cut-away portions in variable coincidence with each other, inclined projecting wings upon each of said tubes, a ring slidably fitted upon the neck of the bowl, there being cut-away portions upon the inner surface of said ring, of width substantially equal to that of the greatest width of wings, in which said wings rest, there being an elongated slot through said ring, said ring having a flange, a rod, projections from said rod adapted to rest respectively above and below said flange, a rod projecting from the upper end of said first-mentioned rod whereby said rod may be turned so that the projections may be brought into and out of alinement with said ring-flange, said first-mentioned rod having a threaded portion, a nut upon said threaded portion and fixed bearings above and below said nut.
