CUTTER-HEAD;y
'SPECIFICATION forming part of Lef-.ters Patent No. 733,221, dated .hay 19de. Application filed December I3, 1902'. Serial No. 135.052. (No model.)
T0 all whom, t 71mg/ con/00772,.-
Be it known that I, JOHN MARTIN KUEBLER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of lVausau, in the county of Marathon and State of lVisconsin, have invented a new and Improved Cutter-Head,of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The principal object of my invention is to provide a cutter-head in which it will not be necessary to make a new set of knives for each design to be cut out from the work. By means of the construction which I have provid ed the same knife Inay be used for different designs, and thus a great saving in tools is obtained.
The invention also involves various other novel features of construction, all of which will be apparent from the following specification.
rlhis specification is an exact description of one example of myinvention, while the claims define the actual scope thereof.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a side elevation of the cutterhead. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. l., this view, however, showing the cutterhead without the knife-holders. Fig. 3 is an enlarged plan view of one of the knife-holders. Fig. -LL is a view showing a modied form of the knife-holder, and Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5 5 of Fig. 4;.
The cutter-head, as shown in Fig. l, is constructed of an integral mass of material; but it is clear that it could be made in sections, dovetailed or bolted together, without departing from the spirit of my invention. The cutter-head comprises a hub a with radial arms a, 'here shown to be four in number. These arms are provided with transverse openings a2 in their ends. The knife-holders comprise bodies b and reduced longitudinally-extending` studs o', the latter fitted in the openings a2. Y The studs are held in place by nuts h2, which screw up on the studs.
The bodies Z) of the knife-holders are widened laterally and formed with a plane outer surface, so as to give the blade a firm bearing thereon, and are formed with openings b3, through which are passed the transverse studthus a variety of patterns may be cut with a 1 knife of single form.
In the construction shown in Fig. i the knifeholder is constructed to carry two blades, (designated o and d.) In attaining this end the knife-holder is made in two sections e, having diagonally engaging faces and dowels e for preventing independent movement of the sec` tions. findicates a bolt which passes through the sections and holds them firmly engaged, the bolt f also holding the knife c' in place. The sections e are formed in their side faces with undercut matching grooves e2, and these grooves are adapted to hold the second knife d. e3 indicates a stud attached to one of the sections c and holding the said section in place on the cutter-head. e4 indicates a nut for fastening the stud e3 in place. It will be observed that the second knife d lies edgewise to the axis of the cutter-head, while the knife c lies sidewise thereto. In this form of my invention the stud e3 is held from turning by a feather e5 set into a splinein thehead a'. (See Fig. 4.)
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. A cutter head, comprising a hub, an arm extending therefrom, a knife-holder, and a bolt attached to the knife -holder and fastened in the arm, said knife-holder being formed of two sections having matching undercut grooves adapted to hold the knife in said grooves.
2. A knife -holder for cutter heads, comprising two sections having meeting faces disposed diagonally to the llongitudinal axis of the knife-holder and knife-gripping surfaces disposed longitudinally of said axis, and means for rigidly holding the sections together.
3. A knife -holder for cutter -heads, comprising two sections having meeting faces disposed diagonally to the longitudinal axis of the knifeholder and knife -gripping surfaces disposed longitudinally of said axis, and means for rigidly holding the sections together, said means comprising a bolt pro- ICO . tion.
4. A cutter-head, comprising a hub, an arm extending outward therefrom, a knife-holder, a stud attached to the knife-holder and fastened to the arm, said knife-holder comprising two sections having opposing surfaces disposed essentially longitudinally of the stud to hold the knife between them, and means for clamping together the sections of the knifeholder.
5. -A cutter-head, comprisinga hub, an arm extending outward therefrom, a knife-holder, a stud attached to the knife-holder and fastened to the arm, said knife-holder comprising two sections having opposing surfaces disposed essentially longitudinally of the stud to hold the knife between them, and means for clamping together the sections of the knifeholder, said means for 'clamping the sections together comprising-a bolt projecting through them and dowel-pins passing through the opposing Walls of the sections, said opposing walls extending diagonally with respect to the longitudinal axis of the knife-holder.
G. A cutter-head, comprising a hub, an arm projecting outward therefrom and having an opening extending transversely through it, a knife-holder comprising an enlarged body and a reduced longitudinally-disposed stud, the latter being mounted in the opening in the arm and the holder-body having a plane lon gitudinallydisposed surface, a knife engaged with said plane surface of the holder-body and disposed longitudinally thereof, and a fastening passed laterally through the knife and holder-body.
7. A cutter head, comprisingaknife-holder, means for revolubly mountingit, said knifeholder being formed in two parts having opposing surfaces, a knife held between said surfaces, a second knife fastened to the outer surfaces of one of the parts of the knife-holder, and means for holding the sections thereof in engagement with each other.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN MARTIN KUEBLER.
