To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that .I, CASPER ZIMMERMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ohicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burglar-Proof Compartments for Railway-Oars, &c.; and I do declare thefollowing to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others Skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same,reference I being had to the accompanying drawings, and

to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in'burglar-proof apparatus for use in connection with tenders of locomotives, express-cars, an; and it comprises a cylindrical compartment which is adapted to be mounted upon the car and made of suitable metal to resist firing, bullets, dynamite, &c., and having a rolling or sliding door mounted within the compartment, whereby a person mayeasilyen ter the compartment and close the door behind him, making it difficult I to open the door from the outside, while the surrounding wall of the compartment is provided with port-holes, whereby the operator may fire upon intruders with perfect safety. The invention consists, further, in various details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claims. My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a Side elevation of a locomotive and tender, showing my improved burglarproof compartment thereon. Fig. 2 is a view of an express-car, showing a slight modification ofmy device as applied thereto. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detailview through thecompartment shown as applied to express-cars.

Reference now being had to the det-ailsof the drawings by letter, B designates the tender of a locomotive, and A the cylindrical wall of a burglar-proofcompartment, having an opening 0 of sufficient size to allow a person to enter and hasa flanged top D. .Mounted within said compartment is a door F,which ismouuted to slide upon the rollers E, adetail of which is shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings, said rollers E being mounted upon a flange H and held in place by means of the cylindrical flange I. Said door is made on the arc of a cylinder and when closed completes a cylindrical wall to the compartment. Said compartment is made, preferably, of heavy steel or other metal and has a flange A'- at its bottom, held to the floor of the tender by means of the bolts or rivets. K, and port-holes N are disposed in the door of said compartment and also about the cylindrical wall, as shown, whereby the occupant of the compartment may open fire in different directions upon intruders. j V

In the drawings I have shown the compartment as provided with a suitable padding J.

In Figs. 2 and 3 I have shown aslight modification of my device as applied to an express car, and in said figures I have shown the Same general construction of compartment, excepting a cylindrical portion M projects through the side of the car and is provided with a plurality of port-holes M about the surface of the hemispherical member 0. (Clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings.) Said cylindrical projection M is of suflicient size to allow an opera-tors head to enter the same for the purpose of looking down the length of the car on the outside, thus allowing the operator to tire through any of the port-holes therein.

In operating my improved burglar-proof compartment for cars it is the .purpose to have the operator enter the compartment, draw the door closed, and lock the same from the inside, and being provided with firearms he will be able through the port-holes to re- .sist and repel the attack of would-be burglars or robbers. As the compartment is made, preferably, of heavy metal, the same will resist the attack of bullets, and the occupant will be free from bodily injury when attacked.

. While I have shown a particular construction of burglar-proof apparatus, it will be understood that I may make alterations in the detailed construction of the same without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. A burglar-proof compartment for cars, com prisin ga cylindrical metallic shell having aflangedbottomadaptedto be bolted to the car, a door made on, the arc of a cylinder, a flange, a cylindrical shell mounted within said compartment, series of balls on which said door rests, and a flanged member holding said balls in place, the surrounding wall of said compartment having suitable port-holes, as setforth.

2. A burglar-proof compartment for cars, comprising a cylindrical shell having flanges at its lower end adapted to be bolted to the floor of the car, a door made on the are of a cylinder adapted to conform to the cylindrical outline of said compartment, a cylindrical projection from the compartment, a hemispherical member with port-holes therein, secured to the outer end of said cylindrical projection, the latter adapted to pass through an aperture in the side of a car, and command a View forward and rearward, as set forth.
