UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ERNEST SCHLICKER, OE'PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
TROLLEY-POLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part `of Letters Patent N o. 732,967, dated July 7, 1903.
Application filed February 21, 17903.` Serial No. 144.399. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, ERNEST SCHLICKEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Trolley-Poles, of which improvement the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved trolley-pole for street-railway purposes; and it consists in the certain details of construction `and combination of parts, as will be fully described hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a front elevation of my improved trolley-pole,
which is constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a side ele- `vation'of the same.
To put my invention into practice with a street-railway car or other vehiclev propelled by electricity from an overhead wire or conductor 5, I arrange upon the top of the car a base-plate 9, having bearings 1 at either side ends of which are attached to posts 10, formed integral with the base-plate 9, the saidsprings S being connected and arranged in a manner to place a tension upon the trolley-pole 3 and keep the same in a vertical position when free from the line-wire 5.
In operation the trolley-pole 3 and its base have a vertical reach slightly greater than the distance between the top of the car andthe line-wire 5, therebygeausing thev pole when in contact with the said Wire toassume a slightly-inclined position, as shown at Fig. 2
of the drawings. The top or contact portion 4 of the trolley-poleis in practice about five feet wide, which will permit side movement the frame or reverse the pole.
It is obvious from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, that by this construction and arrangement of a trolley-pole the contact portion 4 cannot leave the wire 5 under any ordinary condition.
Various slight modifications and changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a device of the character described, the f combination of a base-plate, bearings on either side thereof, a shaft mounted in said bearings, and having its ends projecting therethrough, bell-cranks mounted on said ends of said shaft, means for securing said bell-crank on said ends of said shaft, lugs integral with said base-plate arranged on opposite 'sides of said bearings, springs, connected to said bell-cranks and to said lugs, and a trolley-pole comprisinga frame integral with said shaft, the upper portion of said trolley-pole being formed with a laterallyextended loop having a segmentally-formed upper surface, substantiallylas described.
ln testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ERNEST scHLIoKE-E..
