MORRIS BROWN, or- ,nnw ronx, N. Y.
CIGAR-Box.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 732,919, dated. July '7, 1903. 7 Application filed August 2, 1901. Renewed December 1, 1902. Serial No. 133,458- (No model.)
To dZZ whom it may concerwy Be it known that I, MORRIS BROWN, a'citizen of the United States, residingat NewYork, in the county of New York and State ofNew York, have invented certain new and useful such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. This invention relates to cigar-boxes, and is an improvement on that described and claimed in United States Letters Patent No. 640,741, granted to me January 9, 1900, and the object thereof is to. add to the advantages or' improvements of the cigar-boxde scribed and claimed in said patent automatic devices for canceling or destroying the stamp on the box as the cigars are removed therefrom, and also to render the box described in said patent more compact in form and more uniform and symmetrical. in shape, and with these and other objects in view the invention consists in a cigar-box constructed as here-- inafterdescribed and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same reference characters in each of the views, and in which-- according to my invention; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section thereof on the line 2 2 looking toward the front ofthe box; Fig. 3, a front view of the box and showing a revenue-stamp thereon; and Figs. 4, 5, and 6 are sectional details of the construction. 7 i
In the practice of my invention I provide a cigar-box of the usual form and comprising a body portion open at the top and provided with a hinged covero, said body portion being composed of .ends b, a bottom 0, a front (Z, and a back 6. The box is also provided with a false and vertically-movable springsupported bottom f, which its therein and which is supported by a spring g and which is adapted to be depressed close to the main bottom of the box in the operation of filling the box with cigars.
The front and back sides (I and b of the box are provided at each end with notches or recesses h, which are triangular in form, the
bottom walls thereof being horizontal and the back walls inclined upwardly and inwardly,
- as clearly shown in Fig. 4., and at the top of these notches or recesses are sockets i, and the false bottom f is provided adjacent to each corner with outwardly-directed spring-operated boltsj, which are adapted to enter the notches or recesses h and which are forced outwardly by springs 70, and in the normal operation of this device as the cigars are removed from the box the false bottom is gradually raised, the bolts j enter successively the notches or recesses has each tier of cigars is removed from. the box, and when the last tier is reached the bolts j enter the sockets c' and the box cannot be refilled with cigars, as the false bottom cannot be depressed. The box is also provided at one end with a vertical opening Z, behind which is a countersunk plate on, having a vertical slot or, and said 'plate is provided at one side of said slot with pivoted indicators 0, which are normally proj ected, when the box is filled with cigars, across the slot n. V
The opening or in the end of the box is pro vided at its sides with rabbet-grooves p, in which is placed a glass r, through which the indicators 0 may be seen, and the false bottom f of the box is provided with a pin 8,
i which passes through the slot or opening 7t Figure 1 is an end view of a cigar-box made i and is adapted to move the indicators 0 up wardly as the false bottom rises in the box, and by means of the indicators 0, one of which is employed for each of the layers ofthat shown and described in thepatent referred to; but in this improvement the indicators o and the glass 7" are all countersunk and are flush with the end of. the box. The false bottom f is also provided at tl1e,.front side thereof and adjacent to one end with a sharp-pointed pin or blade 25, which projects through a vertical slot 10 in the front of the box and over which in practice the stamp 10 is placed, and as the false bottom in the box rises, as hereinbefore described, the stamp w will be destroyed by the blade or pin t, and the details of this construction are shown in Fig. 6. It is also necessary to provide means for tion of which bears on the bottom of the false bottom f, as shown in Fig. 5, and one side or arm of which is slightly shorter than the other, the shorter arm being passed through a staple or similar device .2, secured to the bottom ofthe false bottom f, and in practice the false bottom f is held down by the spring y in the operation of packing the cigars in the box; but in the operation of compressing the cigars when the cover is secured the spring y is released from the staple or other device ,2, and when the cover of the box is opened the false bottom fwill be ready to rise, as hereinbefore described. The tension of the spring 9 is so regulated that the false bottom rises as the successive layers of cigars are removed from the box, and the weight of the cigars is all that holds the false bottom down after the box has been opened or the fastening of the cover thereof broken.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A cigar-box provided with a verticallymovable spring-operated false bottom, means for preventing the downward movement of said false bottom,'and countersunk indicators at one end of the box adapted to be operated by said false bottom as the latter rises so as to indicate the number of tiers or layers of cigars in the box, the front of the box being also provided with a vertical slot and said false bottom with a pointed attachment which passes therethrough, substantially as shown and described. I
2. A cigar-box provided with a verticallymovable spring-operated false bottom, the sides of the box being provided at each end with triangular notches or recesses, and said false bottom being provided at each corner with spring-operated bolts adapted to enter said notches or recesses, whereby the said false bottom may be forced upwardly but cannot be depressed, said box being also pro vided at one side with a slot over which the stamp is placed, and said false bottom with a pointed instrument which passes through said slot and through said stamp, substantially as shown and described.
3. A cigar-box provided with a verticallymovable spring-operated false bottom, devicesfor preventing the depression of said false bottom, said box and said false bottom being also provided with means for destroying the stamp on the box as the false bottom rises, substantially as shown and described.
4. A cigar-box provided with a verticallymovable spring-operated false bottom, devices for preventing the depression of said false bottom, countersunk indicators at one end of said box adapted to be operated by the false bottom as it rises so as to indicate the number of tiers or layers of cigars in the box, one side of the box being also provided with a slot over which the stampis placed, and said bottom being provided with an attachment passing through said slot, substantially as shown and described.
5. A cigar-box provided with a verticallymovable spring-operated false bottom, means for preventing the downward movement of said false bottom after it has been raised or partially raised, and devices connected with the bottom and the false bottom for holding said false bottom in its lowermost position, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 8th day of February, 190].
