NUT-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 732,898, dated July?, 1903. f
`Application filed December 16, 1902. Serial No. 135,450. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Louis SAvAniA, a subi' ject of the King of Great Britain, residing in the city and district of Montreal, Province of 5 Quebec, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nut-Locks and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to 1 o which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to nut-locks; and my object is to provide a` nut-lock which is very simple in construction and which can be depended upon to maintain itself in the locked It is intended especially for use in connection with railway construction, and its application in this instance-willbe described hereinafter.
The invention consists in the construction 2o and combination of parts to be more fully described hereinafter and definitely set forth in the claims.
Throughout the drawings and specification the same numerals of reference indicate like In the drawings, Figure 1 represents in side elevation a portion Aof a railway at the point of union of two mails( Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section of the same, passing through 3o one of the connecting-bolts. Fig. 3 is a per* spective view of the bolt constituting a portion of myinvention. Fig. 4 is a perspective of a locking pin or wire which I use. Fig. 5
is a perspective of the nut. Fig. 6 is a vertical cross-section substantially similar to Fig. 2, but showing `a modified form which my invention may take.
Referring more particularly to the parts,
7 7 represent the abutting extremities of two 4o `adjacent rails. At their joint or point of connection there are provided on either side of their webs 8 the usual iish-plates 9 10, ar-
ranged substantially as shown and provided with openings .11 and 12, adapted to aline f Wwith the openingsl through the webs 8 in the usual manner. Through these alining openings I pass thev bolt 14, which, as inicated, comprises a square shank 15, which shank is received by the aforesaid opening 12,
5o which opening is made square to accommoltion without affecting date the same. The head 16 of this bolt may be a round head, as indicated, and the body 0f the bolt is threaded at its extremity, as indicated at 17, for the purpose of attachingI the threaded nut 1S.- At this point the bolt 55 is provided with a longitudinal slot or groove 19, the inner extremity of which terminates in an enlarged opening or recess 20, preferably circular in form.
The nut 18 is substantially similar to an 6o ordinary square nut, except that itis provided with a plurality of radially-disposed slots or recesses 21, preferably eight in number and of the depth indicated. Y
I provide a locking-pin 22, which consists, 6 5 substantially, of a straight piece of stout wire formed at one end into an eye 23. Before the nut is placed upon the threaded extension of the bolt this pin 22` is placed within the slot 19, its eye 23 being received by the aforesaid 7o recess'20, as will be readily understood. The nut having been screwed up tight upon the bolt, it is brought to a position in which any one of the radial slots 21 comes into substantial alinement with the slot 19, whereupon the extremity of the pin is bent around and forced into the bottomof the said slot 21, thereby effectively preventing the removal of the nut or its dislocation without the pre vious removal of the pin. 8c
In Fig. 6 the modiiication illustrated consists in providing each of the recesses 21 with an additional recess 24E, and these recesses 24 are located at the sides of the nut and extend radially inward toward the axis of the bolt. The method of applying the nut is substantially thesame as before, except that the ex tremity of the pin 22 instead of being dis posed entirely in one of the recesses 21 is bent around, as shown, so that its tip projects 9o inwardly and lies within one of the aforesaid. holes or recesses 24.
While I haveshown in the accompanying drawings the preferred formof my invention, it will be understood that I do not limit my- V self to the precise form shown, for many f the details may be changed inform or posid the operativeness or utility of my invention, and I therefore rea serve the right to make all such modifications roc as are included within the scope of the following claims or of mechanical equivalents to the structures set forth.
I-Iaving described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a nut-lock, in combination, a bolt having a threaded extension with a longitudinal groove in the lateral face thereof, said groove having an enlargement at the inner extremity thereof, a nut mounted upon said threaded extension and having recesses in the outer and lateral faces thereof, said recesses being disposed in planes radiating from the axis of said bolt, a locking-pin the body whereof is adapted to be received in said longitudinal groove, said locking-pin having an eye at the inner extremity thereof adapted to be received by said enlargement, said locking-pin being adapted to have its outer extremity bent into one of said recesses in said nut, said nut having other recesses disposed radially in the body thereof, and communieating with the said rst recesses, said latter recesses being adapted to receive the extremity of said locking-pin.
2. In anutslock, in combination, a bolt having a threaded extension with a longitudinal groove in the face thereof, said longitudinal groove having an enlargement at the inner extremity thereof, a nut mounted upon said threaded extension and having a plurality of lateral faces, said nut having a plurality of recesses disposed in planes, radially with respect to the. axis of said nut, certain of said recesses passing substantially through the middle portion of the said lateral faces of said nut, other of said recesses passing through the lateral edges of said nut, and a lockingpin the body whereof is received in said longitudinal groove, said locking-pin having an eye formed at ythe inner extremity thereof, which is received by said enlargement, the other extremity of said locking-pin ybeing adapted to be bent into one of said recesses, said nut having other recesses disposed substantially radially in the body thereof and communicating with said first recesses, said latter recesses being adapted to receive the extremity of said locking-pin.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
