Description
UNTTED STATES Patented June 30, 1905:
PATENT OFFICE;
FRANK A. LIFTCl-IILD, OF BROOKLYN, YORK.
T0 62% whmn it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK A. LIFTCHILD, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, Kings county, in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Medicine-Droppers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
My invention relates to improvements in apparatus for discharging in small quantities the contents of bottles and analogous receptacles; and the same has for its object more particularly to provide a simple, efiicient, and inexpensive dropper for medicines and'liquids generally which may be readily applied to or removed from a bottle or other receptacle. These objects above set forth I am enabled to attain by means of my invention, which consists in the novel details of construction and in the combination, connection, and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and then pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, wherein like letters of reference indicate like parts, Figure 1 is a front or side View of a bottle with a dropper made according to and embodying my invention applied thereto, the same being shown inthe hand of the user and in operation; and Fig. 2 is a central section of the dropper shown at Fig. 1.
In said drawings, A designates a bottle of ordinary construction, and B the dropper secured in the neck thereof, said dropper consisting of a stopper 0, made of soft rubber or other suitable material, having a flange a surrounding the same, which is adapted to contact with the upper surface of the neck of the bottle.
D denotes a compressible top integral with said stopper 0, which latter is provided with a central bore or passage 1), which communicates with the interior of the compressible top D and corresponds in diameter therewith. In the side of said stopper 0, projecting out of the neck of the bottle, is provided a small aperture 0, which extends therethrough at substantially right angles to the bore or passage Z) therein and communicates therewith, and E denotes a delivery-tube, made of glass or other suitable material, which is removably arranged in said stopper, the said delivery-tube E comprising a verticalend, which extends through the bore or passage 1) in the stopper downwardly into the bottle and into the fluid therein, and outwardly and downwardly projecting end, provided with a reduced or drawn-out end d and an intermediate portion E, provided with an annular rib 6, adapted to contact with the outer surface of the stopper in order to hold the delivery-tube E duly in position within the stopper and bottle and to prevent its projecting end from slipping into the stopper. Said intermediate portion E is supported within the aperture 0 of the stopper and adapted for horizontal and axial adjustment therein, whereby to permit of the oscillation or inclination of the lower end of the delivcry-tube E within the bottle in order to reach the corners or edges of the bottle when it is desired to remove the last drops of fluid therefrom.
The operation is as follows: To operate the apparatus, it simply becomes necessary to compress the hollow top D, whereby the air in the upper part of the bottle above the liquid therein will be compressed and the liquid forced upward into the lower end of the tube E and be discharged from the outer reduced end d of the said tube, the How or discharge of the fluid being capable of regulation by varying the pressure upon the hollow top D. As soon as a charge of fluid has been delivered the pressure upon the hollow top D is released,whereupon air will be drawn into the bottle A through the tube E, issue from its immersed end, and after passing through the fluid collect in the upper part of the bottle. By again compressing the hollow top D the operation first described is repeated, and the same may be continued until the entire contents of the receptacle have been discharged, this being rendered possible by reason of the supporting of the delivery-tube E, so as to permit of its being oscillated or tilted within the receptacle to reach its corners.
It will of course be understood that instead of making the stopper 0 and top D integral the same may be made in two parts and secured together.
Without limiting myself to the details of construction, which may be varied within the scope of the invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A dropper comprising a stopper, 2. compressible top, a bore or passage in said stopper communicating with said compressible top, an aperture in the side of said stopper, and a delivery-tube having its inner end extending downwardly through the bore or passsage in said stopper, its other end extending outwardly therefrom, and a portion intermediate its ends supported within the aperture in the side of the stopper adapted for horizontal and axial adjustment therein,substantially as specified.
2. A dropper comprising a stopper, a compressible top on said stopper, a bore or passage in said stopper communicating with said compressible top, an aperture in the side of said stopper at substantially right angles to I i I the bore or passage therein, and a delivery- '20 FRANK A. Ll FTCHILD.
