HERMANN HILL, OF SAVANNAH, GEORGIA, ASSIGNOR TO PRENDERGAST ELECTRIC TYPEWR'ITER. COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF MAINE.
CARRIAGE MECHANISM FOR TYPE-WRITING MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 732,555, dated June 30, 1903.
Application filed December 16, 1902. Serial No. 135.387-- (No model.)
ated machines of the character disclosed and claimed in the joint application of John S. Harrison and myself, filed April 12, 1902, Serial No. 102,592, where a movable element of a motor, such as an electric motor, is controlled by the movements of the key-levers to I actuate all the printing elements, including the carriage; and my objects are to provide an improved carriage-feedin g mechanism which shall be positive and reliable in operation, possessing the fewest number of parts and characterized by direct and positive motions, and which shall be economical of manufacture and durable in use.
With these objects in View my invention consists of the novel construction and details thereof, as hereinafter described with refer-' ence-to the accompanying drawings and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is 'a side elevation, partly sectional, of a carriage mechanism embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the opposite side, showing the parts in the same position. Fig. 3 is a top plan view. Fig. 4: is a similar view showing a clifferent position of the parts, and Fig. 5 is a detail showing the connection of the carriageoperating lever with a movable elem ent of the machine.
Referring now to the drawings, in which the same reference characters indicate the same or corresponding parts in all the views, the operating-lever Y is fulcrumed on the fixed frame at g and has one end detachably connected with the core or armature I of a solenoid or magnet by means of a swinging link The carriage Y is slidably mounted on transverse ways y, with its rack 3 adapted to be engaged by a pawl 11 preferably with 'sev eral teeth, which pawl is pivotally supported.
at y upon a plate Z, slidably mounted in suitable bearings ,2 on the fixed frame. The
plate Z has an inclined slot .2, in which works a roller 2' on the end of the carriage-operating lever Y, fulcrumed at g on the frame, with its hooked end engaging one of the links 2' on the core. I of the solenoid or other movable element controlled by the keys. The lower end of the slot 2 is vertical, so that when the Y roller Z2 reaches this point the plate Z is stopped, as in Fig. 4, the pawl 11 being in engagement with the rack y, and to effect upward movement of the pawl g to engage said rack a pin g on the pawl engages a slot ac in a cam X, fulcrumed at 00 on the plate Z, a pin 00 on said cam-"plate X being adapted to engage a cam-track 2 on the said lever Y,
whereby as the plate Z is moved backward the carriage, during which movement the forward eccentrically-arranged edge 00 of the cam-plate X strikes a fixed stud 2 thereby swinging the plate X upwardly on its pivot and pulling the pin 11 and the pawl 31 downward to the released position of Figs. 1 and 2. To check the carriage at the proper point and prevent it moving more than one space, a pivoted checking-pawl arm .9, fulcrumed on a post 5, has a roller 5 normally pressed into contact with the rack y by a spring 8 which pawl-arm is provided with a toe 4; adapted to engage a projection s on a rock-shaft arm S, connected by a link 5 with the sliding plate. These parts areso arranged and timed that when the plate Z slides forward to feed the carriage the toe s is held down by the projection s an instant before the end of the feeding movement and so held While the rocker-arm is swinging the distance of'the width of the projection, so that the momentum of the carriage is positively checked at the proper instantto prevent the carriage from moving more than one space, because at this instant the roller 5 is positively held into contact with the rack 3 the roller 3 normally answering the purpose during the other part of the movement of the carriage.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a type-writing machine having operating-keys, the combination with a movable element controlled by the keys, of a carriage, a feed-pawl slidably mounted on the fixed structure, connections between the movable element and said pawl, a checking-pawl adapted to check the momentum of the carriage, and locking devices operated by the movement of the feed-pawl to lock said checking-pawl positively into engagement with the carriage as the same completes its required movement for spacing, substantially as described.
2. In a type-writing machine having oper ating-keys, the combination with a carriage, a movable carriage-operating lever, a movable element for operating the same, a sliding plate operated by said lever and having a feed-pawl pivotally mounted thereon, and
devices on the pawl and plate arranged to swing the pawl into engagement with the carriage for forward feed of said carriage as the plate is moved forwardly by the lever, and a device for swinging said pawl to release the same from engagement with the carriage when the spacing movement is completed, substantially as described.
3. In a type-writing machine, the combination with a carriage, of a pivoted feed-pawl slidably carried upon the frame of the machine, an operatingdever adapted to impart a backward motion to the pawl, connections between the lever and pawl for imparting an upward motion thereto for engagement with the carriage, and a forward and downward motion thereto when the lever moves in the opposite direction, substantially as described.
4. In a type-writing machine, the combination with a carriage, of a plate slid ably mounted on the frame of the machine, a feed-pawl pivotally supported thereon, an operating-lever having an arm engaging said plate, movement of the lever in one direction causing backward motion of the plate and, in the other direction, forward movement of the same, and connections between the lever and the pawl adapted to cause upward movement of the pawl as the plate is moved backward by the lever and downward movement of said pawl when the forward movement of the plate and the pawl is completed, substantially as described.
5. 111 a type-writing machine, the combination with a carriage, of a plate slidably mounted on the frame of the machine, a fecd-pawl pivotally supported thereon, an inclined slot in said plate, an operating-lever having one arm engaging said slot so that downward movement of said arm will impart backward motion to the plate and upward movement thereof, forward motion to the same, and connections between the said lever-arm and the pawl adapted to cause the pawl to move into engagement with the carriage when the plate moves backward and out of engagement therewith when the pawl has completed its forward feeding motion, substantially as described.
6. In a type-writing machine, the combination with a carriage, of a plate slidably mounted on the frame of the machine, of a feed-pawl pivotally supported thereon, an inclined slot in said plate, an operating-lever having an arm engaging said slot, a cam having a slot therein pivotally supported on the sliding plate, a pin on the pawl engaging said slot, a connection between the arm of the lever and the cam adapted to rock'the cam on its pivot when the arm moves the sliding plate backward, thereby swinging the pawl into en gagement with the carriage, and means for swinging said cam in the opposite direction to draw the pawl out of engagement with the carriage when the lever-arm has moved the sliding plate in the opposite direction, substantially as described. l
7. In a type-writing machine, the combination with a carriage, of a plate slidably mounted on the frame of the machine, of a feedpawl pivotally supported thereon, an inclined slot in said plate, an operating-lever having an arm engaging said slot, a cam having a slot therein pivotally supported on the sliding plate, a pin on the pawl engaging said slot, a connection between the arm of the lever and the cam adapted to rock the cam on its pivot when the arm moves the sliding plate backward, thereby swinging the pawl into engagement with the carriage, and a lug on the frame adapted to engage the cam as the plate completes its feeding motion and swing the said cam so as to draw the pawl out of engagement with the carriage, substantially as described.
8. In atype-writing machine, the combination with a carriage, of a feed-pawl slidably carried on the frame of the machine, means for imparting backward and upward motion to the pawl to cause it to engage the carriage and forward and downward motion to cause it to move the carriage and disengage therefrom, a checking-pawl normally in contact with the carriage, and connections between the feed-pawl and the checking-pawl adapted to positively lock the said checking-pawl against the carriage about the time the spacing movement of the carriage is completed, substantially as described.
9. In a type-writing machine, the combination with a carriage, of a plate slidably mounted on the frame of the machine, a feed-pawl pivotally supported thereon, means for moV- ing the plate and causing the pawl to engage and disengage the carriage to move the latter for spaeing,a checking-pawl normally in yieldin contact with the carriage, and connections between said checking-pawl and sliding plate so timed in action as to positively lock the checking-pawl against the carriage to check its momentum when the spacing movement is completed, substantially as described.
