CEMENT FENCE-POST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 732,447, dated June 30,1903.

Be it known that I, ALONZO P. ROBERTSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rochester, in the county of Oakland, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cement Fence-Posts; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilledin the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to a cement fencepost; and it consists in the construction and arrangement hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out particularly in the claim.
The object of the invention is to produce a cement fence-post wherein provision is made a for stifiening and strengthening the post'to prevent the breaking thereof at or near the ground-line or at any other by concussion or strain and to provide for securely anchoringwithin the post the wire'loops, to which the line-wires of the fence may be attached. 1
The above object is attained by the structure illustrated in the accompanying draw ings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a fencepost embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical diagonal section through said post. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section as on line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a similar section as on line 4 4 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the characters of reference, 1 designates the post, which is formed of a suitable mixture of sand and cement, as is well understood in the art. Said mixture while in a plastic state is placed in a suitable mold, in which it is given the required shape. For the purpose of strengthening the post to resist lateral strain there is imbedded in each of the four corners thereof a thin metallic strip 2, which are fiat and straight throughout their entire length. These strips are secured in the mold in a suitable manner be-.
fore the plastic mixture of which the post is formed is placed therein, so that upon the removal of the mold said strips remain imbedded in the corners of the posts, as shown. These metallic strips, extending as they do from the top to the bottom of the post and each standing in a radial plane, serve to stiffen the post and to strengthen it laterally, obviating the liability of the post becoming shattered or broken off at or near the ground-line, as is common in climates where there is alternate freezing and thawing weather. The metal strips being located at the corners of the posts serve also to strengthen said corners, so as to prevent them from becoming chipped.
To provide for the attachment of the linewires of the fence to the post, one or more of the metal strips 2 may be provided with a series of apertures 3, as shown in Fig. 2, in which are secured the inner ends of the wire loops t. These wire loops cross the post diagonally and pass out the opposite corner to that in which their inner ends are secured, so as to afford means for attaching the line-wires to the post. It will be understood that these attaching-loops are held firmly in place while the post is being formed, so as to become imbedded therein. By attaching said loops to the metal strips in the opposite corner to that from which they project the strip to which said loops are attached is prevented from being drawn from the post by any strain which may be applied to said loops.
While I have shown the metal strips as located in the corners of the post, they may be oppositely disposed at any other point in the post, if desired, and in round posts will be so positioned as to strengthen the post in the same manner as herein shown.
If desired, the attaching-loops 4 may be secured to two of the oppositely-disposed strips and caused to pass through the side of the post opposite to that in which the metal strip to which they are secured is imbedded. By this arrangement the longitudinal wires of the fence may be attached to the post so as to extend in opposite directions therefrom or may be made to lead from the post at right angles.
Having thus fully set forth my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
