To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, AMANDUS J OHANN AU- GUST OESTERREIOH, a subject of the German Emperor, and a resident of the city of Hamburg, in the German Empire, have invented certain new and usefulImprovements in Hemstitch Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to that class of hemstitch sewing-machines which are described in the specifications forming part of my former Letters Patent'No. 537,846, of April 23, 1895, and No. 689,112, of December 17, 1901, in which a thread-divider is employed to be inserted between two of the groups of thread of the fabric forming the open-work hem, whereby a free and proper passage for the needle between the threads of the hem is made, which threads are stitched in groups along the two edges of the open-work.

The present invention is an improvement on the hemstitch-machines above mentioned; and it consists in providing means whereby the thread-divider may be used for making double hems, between the two rows of which a narrow strip of the weft is left. I attain this object by means of the arrangement and construction of parts in a hemstitch sewing machine, as will hereinafter be more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which I Figure 1 is a bottom view of the forward part of the work-plate of a hemstitch sewingmachine made according to my present in vention and showing the thread-divider with its driving mechanism. Figs. 2 and 4 are sectional side elevations of the mechanism shown in Fig. 1, but with the parts in different positions in the two figures. Figs. 3 and 5 are cross-sections corresponding, respectively, to Figs. 2 and 4; and Fig. 6 represents, on a considerably-enlarged scale, the mode of forming and stitching double hems according to the present invention.

Similar characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.

In order to adapt the thread-divider for use in forming double hems 011 both sides of a narrow strip of weft or other undrawn threads in the fabric in case a laterally-movable neereciprocated horizontally or laterally, in unison with the laterally-moving needle for the purpose of taking consecutively between the hem-threads of the fabric while the latter is fed the positions 1 2 3 4 5 6, which are represented by Fig. 6 and correspond to the corners of the zigzag tying-seam made by the needle. In case this zigzag seam is made by moving the fabric laterally in lieu of moving the needle laterally the divider needs only make vertical reciprocating movements, so as to take successively, owing to the fabric being fed, the aforesaid positions between the threads of the hem and on the opposite sides of the central separating-strip corresponding with the zigzag tying-seam.

In the form of the invention represented in the drawings the thread-divider is designed to reciprocate horizontally or' laterally, corresponding to the horizontal or lateral movements' of the needle, while the fabric is only fed in a forward direction away from the attendant.

The thread-divider consists of a spur or prong a, carried by a shank or tailpiece b, which hasadouble-joint connection Withastationary support by means of the pivots c c at the opposite ends of a connecting-link. The shank or spur-carrierb is engaged by an arm d of a rocker d, which is capable of being turned and also of being shifted axially in or on proper bearings, afforded in the. present instance by the shaft 6. The rocker is provided with a fork h, engaging a cam g on the looper-shaft f between fast shoulders g g. The fork his capable of being adjusted relative to the rocker d and the cam g for. the purpose of regulating the throw of the rocker, and consequently the vertical reciprocations of the. spur or prong a.

The rotating looper-shaft f is mounted so as to be capable of being shifted axially, and suitable driving mechanism is provided for reciprocating said shaft axially. or longitudinally in unison with the lateral or horizontal movements of the needle 12. The turning of the looper-shaft through the medium of parts g h d all causes the thread-divider a to be raised and lowered, while owing to the axial or horizontal shifting of the looper-shaft the said divider is alternately moved laterally to the left and right, such movements of the divider being permitted by the pivots or joints 0' c at the opposite ends of the link connecting the divider-carrying shank b with a proper support attached to the work-plate of the machine. These lateral or horizontal movements otthe thread-divider and of the needle are so timed relative to each other that the divider will correctly and at the proper intervals separate for the passage of the needie the threads of the hem on both sides of a central longitudinal strip of undrawn threads in the fabric, said divider taking the aforesaid positions between the threads while the needle makes the zigzag stitches for producing the tying-seam.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a hemstitch sewing-machine, the combination with suitable stitch-forming devices, comprising a needle, of a thread-divider for separating the threads of the fabric of a hemstitch seam, and means for imparting relative lateral movements to the needle and threaddivider and the work, for the purpose of forming groups of hemstitches on the opposite sides of a central separating strip of the fabric being nemstitched.

2. In a hemstitch sewing-machine, the combination with a stitchforming mechanism comprising a vertically and horizontally reciprocating needle, of a thread-divider, and means for reciprocating the same vertically and for moving the same horizontally or latorally to correspond to the horizontal or lateral movements of the needle.

3. In a hemstitch sewing-machine, the combination with a stitch-forming mechanism comprising a vertically and horizontally reciprocating needle, of a thread-divider arranged below the work-plate, and means for reciprocating the same vertically, and for moving the same horizontally or laterally to correspond to the horizontal or lateral movements of the needle.

4. In a hemstitch sewing-machine, the combination with a stitch-forming mechanism, comprising a vertically and horizontally reciprocating needle, of a thread-divider a, a shank or carrier 1) to which the thread-divider is attached, and which shank or carrier has a double-jointed connection with the work-plate of the machine, the rocker d having an arm (1 for reciprocating the said divider vertically, and means for moving said rocker endwise for the purpose of imparting horizontal or lateral movements to the said thread-divider.
